I did the mod, it works.
Shadow Sabre tank, 4.2gallons. I had to make a spacer (I used oak 3/4" plywood I had on-hand) to make the mounting bracket/spacer. I also had to replace the stock air filter with an aftermarket filter that was different shaped. I had planned to replace the stock aircleaner regardless. I still have to do the carb re-jet, to tune the carb to the aircleaner.
as can be seen, the bracket hooks under the existing tank mounts, from the front instead of the rear.

I'm a telephone company tech by trade, I work in a central office with low voltage wiring and such.
I'm not a welder. I work with wood, and am real glad adhesives are available that really hold equal to welding, in some respects. really liked having hot-melt to temp tack things in place for testing fit/clearances. getting the clearance on the steering lock-to-lock required the most trial and error. I wanted just a slight amount, no more than 1/8" or so.
I'm gonna add some more pics and details later.
Plus, I'll shortly have a standard tank for the VLX 600 available for sale.

for the rear mount, I"ll be probably using JB Weld to place a metric nut for the rear mount bolt/spacer assembly to fasten to, once I'm sure there is enough room for the gas petcock.
the petcock on the original tank was 3/4" too long on the part inside the tank, so I had to buy an OE petcock since the Sabre tank did not come with a petcock as part of the deal.

I may slightly shorten the front nose of the seat, depending on how it looks when everything is all bolted up.

gonna be nice, with a 4.2gallon tank, .4gallon reserve!
