Hey everyone, I'm new to motorcycles and this website. I'm planning to take the MSF course in June, and I was wondering what everybody here thinks of it. Also, I'm going to look at a 1986 Shadow 700 on Friday, and I wanted to ask if that would be a good bike to start out on.
fuck off newbie!
yes, the msf class is EXCELLENT. i took it 2 days before i picked up my bike (my first) and when i hopped on her and pulled onto the highway, i felt totally at ease on her! of course, it'll take a few months of riding to be completely comfortable and be able to automatically do the motions of riding w/o too much thought.
that 700 sounds like a pretty good bike to start on.
my friend just let me borrow this cheesy video on slow speed maneuvering that actually turned out VERY informative.
i learned a shit ton from it. it's called MOTORMAN or something like that.
you should check that out too.

Hahahahahaha. Little letter n00b is hung like a tic-tac.
Seriously though, you should definetly take the course brother... it's worth the $300. You've heard 'Jesus saves'? I submit that 'MSF saves'. You'll learn a lot.
And the Shadow (ANY shadow) is a great bike. The '86 is perfect to start on - if you drop it you wont feel like you lost your shorts because of it.

They didn't have them courses when I got on two wheels.....lol. I guess if that is what is going to make you comfortable then go for it. I know a few guys that took a course like that and got quite a bit out of it.

One more question: I was talking to the guy that is selling the Shadow, and he said that the choke cable needs to be replaced. Is that a big deal, or will it be easy to do?

I took the course with my wife when she got her bike. A week later, we were out riding, and a car in front of her locked up the brakes cause a dear crossed in front of it. Honda Mama was sueezin both brakes, and I saw smoke coming off her rear tire...then it stopped as she got off the brakes and did a beautiful swerve around the car, clearing the rear bumper by an inch. I was stopped behind her, shitting my drawers. Honda mama was parked beside the cager (an old lady) having a pleasant conversation.
Don't forget the most important gear on the road, noobie...your fucking head!
BTW: Since they stopped making the VLX (for awhile), you can get a great deal on the 2007 models, new. They are a good starter bike, as well as a commuter bike. I have a 93 that I ride to the mill most of the year.
