I'm looking at Shadow 1100's from 1995 to 2000. Are there any big issues that come up with these bikes? Are high miles (30,000) a concern? Any real weak spots on the bike? I know the ACE models have the single crankpin and will sound better. Is the power difference that much between a Spirit and an ACE? Thanks. How are the valves adjusted on the 1100 motor (hydrualic, shim, locknut)?

you dont adjust the valves on the 1100. cant tell you if theres a power difference as I havent ridden and ace. 30,000 miles isnt bad at all, the bikes will run forever. the single crank pin sounds different, but it also vibrates more

Don't forget the 98-02 Aeros also have the single crankpin. I'm not sure how other 1100 shadows are but my bro-in-law has a Triumph Bonneville. I let him ride my bike and he was surprised by how much more powerful it was.

Thanks for the replies. How many miles do you guys have on your bikes? I will be looking at 2 on Saturday. Both 96's. A stripped one for $4000 and a loaded one for $4500. Both with 17k miles. Anything I should be on the lookout for?

I only have about 16K on mine. Can't really think of anything to look out for.

I bought a 97 ACE 1100 three years ago...Had 16K miles on it when i bought it....Other than replacing the battery, I haven't had anything die on me since i've had it....Love the look and sound of the ACE and don't regret the purchase at all...only things i would look out for are not specific to the 1100's, just general questions like maintenance records, how long has it been sitting, garage kept, etc...Good Luck!

I looked at an 96 today with 17k. I didn't get to ride because my son with with. It ran for about 10 minutes in 35 degree weather and after 10 mins still wouldn't rev freely. The owner said it took about 15 minutes to warm up in cold weather and 5 in warm. I'm going back to ride it this afternoon. The bike's paint was in nice condition. It had pipes, saddle bags and windshield. The owner bought it new in 97. It still had it's original coolant and rear end oil. I know that's not ideal, but probably not too different than many other bikes. He would take $3400 for it. My other option is to buy a new Kawasaki Vulcan 900 for $7000. Not sure if I want to spend the extra money though.

i had an 85, and she took a long time to warm up, other than that, when i sold the bike it had over 40k on it, and the new owner rides it all the time, has no problems with the bike:thumbsup:

Edit, It was a 96 not an 86. It ran pretty well except that it had the hesitation the other one I rode did, but not as bad. When you are releasing the clutch you have to give it more gas than I would expect. It stumbles a bit and then goes. What is this an idication of? Both bikes had pipes.

I would suspect jetting. But it could be other things too.
