If you do get a skid lid, remember you can't ride with it in a helmet state if it has no DOT sticker.

slimmer than a skid lid? well shave your head and paint it black. i wear one once in a while. i dont think you will find one slimmer. skid lids are not DOT aproved. but you can get a high impact skid lid with a DOT aproved strap. most of the ones you see around here in the leather shops are just novelty items just for looks. they offer no protection at all. made of cheap plastic. i actualy had one and the strap broke and it flew off my head so i just kept going. but the high impact one i have now is of better quality and makes me feel a little safer. i usaly dont wear one at all. i took my driving test and had to wear a full face helmet and failed because of the blind spots.

i looked at those years ago, but didn't wanna spend that much dough on something that might turn out looking the same as the shit they sell at the stealer.
can you snap a pic of the helmet next to a "normal" one to see the size difference?

and though they're more expensive than other half helmets, they're less than half what some of my buddies pay for their full faces!

id rather not wear one, but my gf has a fit. i just thought id get the minimum to shut her up. she doesnt need to know its not dot approved

i am willing to spend the money, i just dont want something thats the same as the other ones. we dont have any dealers in town, so i am limited to buying one online...i will post the differnce with a pic when i get the helmet.

That would be good to see a real pic of one of those helmets. In the past I have found that these internet dealers are real good at making a helmet look alot smaller than it is. I'm skiddish to spend that kind of money and not be satisfied.

I bought a Fulmer Ranger recently, DOT approved, and it's pretty comfortable for when I feel the need to wear a helmet. It was around 50 Bucks at the Honda dealership here.

I looked at skid lid and THH helmets yesterday. The THH were smaller and both were the DOT versions. It was 40 bucks or something. Im gonna probably get one.

You need to pay good attention to the laws of different states, just because the helmet is D.O.T approved, does not mean it is safe, you should see, if it is also Snell/D.O.T approved, Snell changes the rules for impact every 5 years, and they have been changed 2 years ago.
just my 2 cents

WA only requires a DOT approved helmet. Right now the only thing DOT approved is my sticker. Im thinking anything will be better than my voss. I love the weightless feeling of it, but Im thinking I need something a little safer.

Ya'll wear what you want, it's your decision (and punkin') but I just want to respond to the "blind spots with a full face". That's a big load of crap. IF you have a helmet that fits, you will not have blind spots.

I've ridden with a full face for 5+ years (and about 7 years prior to that as a passenger) and have never had trouble with my peripheral vision or seeing anything for that matter - rain or shine.

FWIW - Fulmer's are good helmets - couple riders in our group have them and have been very happy with them so far.

Girlfriend of mine wrecked going 20 MPH (she hit a street sign with her front tire)...had a full face, mesh jacket, gloves, boots.... She was in the hospital for a week with blood on her brain. If she hadn't had her helmet on, she wouldn't be here today.

They can be warm in the summer and give you helmet head but I'm wearing my full face...

There are a Lot of Good Half Helmets out there for not alot of cash DOT approved

I got the wife a Flat Black Skid Lidz http://www.compacc.com/prod.cfm/fid/10/pid/18408

And Myself a Candy Red Electro http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/tf-Browse/s-10101/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2000169/p-2000169/N-111+10211+600013868/c-10111

Both are comfortable and meet requirements when we Ride to the Base or Outta State to Mass. etc. they are not those cheesy Novelty Helmets which I've seen alot of Riders in Mass. wearin as I rode down the Road, I just figure if you've gotta wear one it should at least be a REAL One and offer some protection just mt 2 cents

if it is infact a DOT helmet, i would like to tell you,
NEVER CHANGE, OR REMOVE ANYTHING THAT WAS PUT ON THE HELMET AT THE PLACE IT WAS MADE!

the only thing you are gonna do, is get a quick ride to the cooler.

and, yes, they do make quick disconnect chin straps, most of the time, they dont work right, but if you must get one, they cost @ 10. bucks at any bike shop:thumbsup:

A quick ride to the cooler huh? The place I got the helmet said they wont sell the quick disconnects I guess they think their not safe, but their the only one around me sellin the THH. you would think the snaps wouldn't be permanint cause not everyone wants a visor or face sheild. Picked up some real nice riding glasses today though from a flea market and wasn't looking for them at all. Just 12 bucks for a clear set and shade set. Can't beat that I lose anything not attached to me.

Yea. I guess a helmet really helped them. Sorry I think you should wear helmets and all but is it just me or is showing how people died even though they wore a helmet doesn't exactly get the point across. I keep hearing peoples stories of how someone they know died and that they were wearing a helmet and that somehow makes it better. Tell me the stories of how someone lived because they wore a helmet so I can stop this rant.:cyclist:

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but logic tells you a full face at all times is the best bet. But, I don't do it. For short jaunts here in town I don't wear one. For out of town I wear a half. May be a mistake. Sometimes, just getting out of bed may be a mistake. But, I do that too.

I buy all my lidz on ebay. In PA we arent required to wear a helmet, but depending on the ride depends on how i dress. My neighbor is an EMT for 25years , and she tells me all the cycle stories. According to her, depending on the style of the crash, a full face and a lid means the difference between an open or closed casket. But WTF does she know.

Was that a crotch rocket I saw. So you got to be one of those guys huh. That sucks man. Can't believe you walked away from that. I think I read that like 75% of crashes with crotch rockets don't involve other vehicles. Theres a reason I don't ride one I would kill myself and there is no way I would get on one without full gear. I'm not doin 100+ on my rat ride cause it tops out at 100 and I like it that way.

WOW, very lucky motosicle, is that a BUSA you were riding? There is no doubt that depending on the crash right gear will save you, look at AMA racers. However if when you went down at that speed and hit say a guardrail, it would be over.

We've went to Arai's....on our second set, just bought new ones last year. LOVE them. Most comfortable helmet I've ever worn even with speakers in it (we have CB units & MP3 players). :cool4:

when I saw this thread, I was itching to tell you guys about carbon fiber helmets........but I see the site is already known, anyways, carbon fiber is the newest baddest material out there......even though carbonfiberhelmets.com doesnt sell 100% carbon fiber helmets.......mixed with Kevlar and something else

I've been doing some research on carbon fiber for awhile now, like it started in the space program in the 70's (the best decade by far), and now its working its way into regular life.......if you want to call race cars and bike helmets regular

Carbon fiber is 3 times stronger than steel, and much much lighter. As production of carbon fiber becomes more main stream, more output, as it is a relatively new thing to buy for us commoners, you'd have to be crazy not to want one.......it wont be too long before they make full helmets out of carbon fiber compounds

You know those open wheeled race cars, the Mario Andretti ones, Indy cars or whatever, the entire shells on them are now one molded piece of carbon fiber, very light, and way way stronger than anything else.......I'm definitely getting a carbon fiber helmet.......but maybe not from carbonfiberhelmets.stealers

I found some full faced carbon fiber helmets at this site, they only cost $1,400
