Howdy To the Group:

I'll be upgrading from factory exhaust to V&H's Straightshots on my '02 750 Spirit. A couple of questions. First, what kind of performance increase can I expect from this exhaust upgrade? Is it a noticable increase when you roll the throttle back? What do they sound like? V&H recommends a jet change. DynoJet makes a Stage1 upgrade kit. Is the jet change a must?
I'm an experienced automotive tuner and have tuned many carbs and fuel injection systems over the years. Does anyone know what the air to fuel ratio is of the exhaust using a wide-band O2 sensor (at various rpm levels)?
With factory jetting and factory pipes, the exhaust smells rich and the pipes are tinged black at the tips. If the factory jetting is that rich, it seems like a jet change with an exhaust upgrade wouldn't be necessary and all that would be needed is to watch the exhaust color at the inside edge of the pipe.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks.

you'll get a couple hp more, but don't expect something major. I personally don't know much about the jetting, I had someone else do mine, but it's weird if your's runs rich from stock, they usually are pretty lean and thats why when you put the new pipes and rejet it seems so much better.

Also, if your putting new pipes on, and you don't have enough money for a new intake, get a K&N filter, it does make a difference (plus, your letting more air out with your new pipes, might as well suck more in also)

rejetting to a stage 1 is a MUST with V&H pipes, or any other pipe other than the stock for that matter....the V&H pipes like most other after markets are engineered for precision preformance for whatever bike the're made for, and yes they will give a bit of a noticable HP increase, and along with the pipes a K&N filter is just about a needful thing, as the combo (pipe/filter) will def give a noticable power increase.....that being said. Fuck the fuck off noob an do yourself a real favor and go with the "Bean-Box mod" for one hell of a power boost....that mod will need stage 3 jetting.....search the threads for more detailed info.....it just dawned on me that some in here have not gone to stage 1 with aftermarket pipes and have suffered no ill effects.....IMO if your gonna do it give yourself all the benefits of the stage 1 with pipes and K&N filter.....
