View Full Version : New bike takes forever to warm up

I have a 2004 Spirit 1100 with 400 miles on it. The bike runs great once its warmed up, but runs like dogshit and sometimes wont even hold idle when I first start it up. I try lots of choke, little choke, doesn't matter it just runs like shit until it is warmed up. Takes about 5-7 minutes before it will even run smooth on its own without messing with the throttle. I have DG Hard Krome pipes and jets I am going to put on the bike soon, so hopefully this problem will go away.

Hi Maniac,

First thing.....I don't believe in modifying the machines before the "break-in" period is complete to be a wise move.

so......that a qualified tech could determine IF there is an issue you will first have to remove the installation of aftermarket pipes as an issue......

What I'm saying is that .....If it's still under warranty and you have modified it ....the service dept. may not honor the warranty.

Best bet would be to re-install the OEM exhaust and remove any other non-OEM equipment, adjust accordingly Then bring it to the service dept for diagnostics.

If you are going to perform all maintenance then please, update this thread.

mine takes about 5 min to warm up. I have Cobra pipes, jet kit, bootleg intake. Before those mods there was almost no warm up time.

thanks for the reply. I am planning on doing all the mx myself, and from I have heard of dealers, I'm better off doing it myself anway. I was going to wait until after I took it in to the dealer for the 600 mile check, but everyone tells me all I am going to do is pay 200 bucks for an oil change. I defintely want to put on the pipes and rejet - even if it means voiding the warranty. I looked at the choke cable and I think it is binding on something - i am planning getting all that straight this wekend when i change my pipes and rejet. i was really just looking for thoughts on why it runs like shit at first. once it warms up, it runs awesome with plenty of low and mid range power. i just dont want to overlook a problem (if there even is one) before i tear it all apart.

Make sure you run 87 octane. I hear it will run like shit on higher.

That depends . I got my 600 mile done and my bike ran way better . The valves where a little off . It warmed up faster too . I thought it was going to be a $270 screw job . I was wrong . Wait until the breakin service is done . My bike took at least 5 minutes to warm up back then . It only takes a minute or 2 now . I also have a stage 3 kit and wrapped Burbs . I am sure that it makes a big difference .

My bike also ran a lot better after the 600 mile tune up.
They must do a little tweaking while they are doing the oil.
It runs so much smoother now. Warm up is only a min or two.
Just about enough time to put on your jacket and helmet, check your mirrors, adjust your nuts and your good to go.

My apologies. After reading your post again I understand you have the mods waiting in the balance.....at any rate...I'd suggest you bring it in for the suggested service interval, but give the service dept your list of "to-do's" such as no oil changes, no waxing my a$$ and fix the choke-cable-issue-that-could-be-related-to-the warm-up-issue.

I'd suggest you wait till the engine is well broken in (1500mi?) and all (if any) warranty issues are completely resolved before performing ANY modifications.

Hi Guys

I am new to the forum and noticed this thread. I too have a bike just approaching that first service stage and as I put miles on the bike, it took longer to warm up.

The first service calls for a valve adjustment as well as oil change. I would think that this along with fixing your choke cable should do the trick.

Speaking of oil changes, does anyone know of a cross reference for an oil filter for an 05 spirit? Preferably for a decent filter, (champion Purolator) not a Fram?

well, against some advice I put on Hard Krome pipes, dyno jet stage 1 jet kit, and a KN filter and damn am I glad i DID. The bike sounds fucking awesome and runs great. I found the SE valve (start enrichment or choke) out of adjustment so I took care of that too. If anybody ever questions if HD Hard Kromes are worth the money think no more - they sound un-fuckin-beleivable Period.
