Have you tried looking into Consumer Reports. They are unbias in there testing and have a pretty extensive data base. If someone on here has a subscription they may be able to help you or get you information from the online version of the magazine.

I had a Hoover Windtunnel and it died on me after about 2 years...it did a pretty good job. Was about $200.

Ended up biting the bullet and bought a Dyson. It is unbelieveable how much better this vaccum is...it's a lot quieter, you can wash out the filters, and the suction this thing has is amazing.

FYI - all Dysons are the same (they all have the same motor). Price is basically dependent on what accessories you want. So you can buy the low end model and add accessories later if you want and save some $'s up front. I paid about $400 for mine. Sears runs them on sale pretty often too.
