I was coming home tonight from the GF's beach house about 9:30, and all of a sudden I see brake lights galore. I was in the slow speed lane and could see a couple of cars pulled over. Got a little further and looked to my right and saw a car spun the wrong way and the front end destroyed. It was on the grass on the other side of the on-ramp. I didn't even think twice, I drove my civic up and over the median with a nice loud crunch as it bottomed out coming off the median. I walked toward the car and asked the guy standing there if anybody was hurt. He said the girl in the car was. Then he asked if I knew anything about cars. I asked why, and he said cuz the car was smoking and didn't know if we should move her. I told him the smoke was from the airbags and we weren't moving her anywhere. Her lower leg was bent about 90 degrees the wrong way.
So I asked her all the usual questions (seatbelt? hit your head? black out? Basically everything was OK except the leg. I climbed in the back and held traction on her neck as a precaution and just kept talking to her. I asked her name and told her mine and that I was an EMT. She starts thatnking me. I said what are you thanking me for? I didn't do anything. she said "Cuz you're keeping me from screaming my head off." Finally, about 8 firetrucks and 6 rescues showed up and took over. I'll have to watch the news at 11 to see how everybody made out. While I was in the back seat, I was glancing around the highway and saw a car near the center median that was really wrecked bad. Hopefully everybody is OK.

It's been so long since I worked the rescue that it felt great to do something like that again.

Sorry to bore you guys with this, just feel really good. Funny how as down in the dumps I've been lately and doing something small like that can cheer me up.

Good going. I'm not an EMT, but I usually stop to see if I can help. You would be suprised at the number of people that don't even know to turn off the cars ignition. I helped an old lady one time several years ago. She had passed out and ran her car over a fire hydrant, before hitting a cement calvert. It pushed the front end up into where her legs were and you could see blood dripping from under the car. I stayed with her and taked to her till the EMTs came. They had to cut the car apart to get her out and life flight her to the hospital. When they pulled her out of the car, both her legs looked like noodles.I found out later she lost both legs.
