Jeff went home about 3-4 weeks ago. He was in Helen Hayes Hosp. for rehab for a month or so. Now he's back home and goes in for rehab. :jamming:
The legal side is just heating up now, you don't want me up on that soapbox....

Glad to hear he's doing better. If you need to get on a soap box, you go right ahead.

The families of the guys that died and the survivors have decided to file a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the city. The basis is that back in the day the FDNY supplied every ff with safety ropes. They discontinued the practice a few years back after it was found that over half the guys that were issued ropes didn't even carry them, claiming they were too bulky.
So now, after this tragedy, everyone is up at arms about the city not giving out ropes. And the lawsuits are on.
Jeff did have a rope that day. That's how he survived. But the logic is he had a rope but the city should still have issued one.
Now, I don't know about you or your department. But I went out years ago and got my own rope. And my own escape belt, 45' of good climbing rope and a couple beeners at each end. I figure that the $200 investment was worth my ass in a bad situation. These guys are suppose to be the best of the best :undecided but want everything handed to them. It's only common sense, if you're in a job where a piece of equipment can provide for your OWN personal safety get it, don't wait until someone hands it to you.
The FDNY has innovated a lot of things and they do a lot of work. But I'm getting a little sick and tired of all the whining they do. They are so used to getting everything handed to them that it's becoming the standard there.
Fuck, we can't even get into the state firefighter pension system, we have no death or disability benefit, if I get killed in the line of duty I get 50k and a go fuck yourself from the state, no LODD benefit from the Public Safety Officer Benefits Act, nothing. I work 53 hrs a week with no overtime compensation and get paid the same as a state secretary that works a 40 hr week and is home on weekends, nights, and holidays.
We contacted the UFA in the city to see if we could get a letter of endorsement for the bill that's being submitted to the Gov. they said no thanks you're on your own. So we went public, and you know what? Not one letter in the paper from the thousands of FDNY guys that live here in support. I almost lost my job over this, but if it helped the dept it's worth it if someone gets killed.

That's unbelievable. They are the ones who decided not to carry them. We don't have them here. A couple of guys have their own. The last year or so we have seen many safety improvements on the dept. One of the full time Lieutenants became the safety officer and he is doing everything he can to make sure we all get back safe from a call.
Here's a link to what the Massachusetts Call Volunteer Fire Association (MCVFA) is working on for call and volunteers in MA. It also will cover special and reserve police officers. I had mentioned something about this to ya a while ago.
