Cobra Freeway Bars - VT1100C I bought them at the dealer, but look at
CruiserCustomizing (http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/detail.cfm?model_ID=7&Category_ID=6&manufacturer_ID=4&product_ID=9659) Here is a closer look at them!

thanks! is the top of the guard mounted to the frame with a C clamp, or is there drilling involved?

DelhiRider
03-02-2005, 10:43 PM
Great looking bike!!!! The holes are pre-drilled, however, you need to drill them out larger!!! Only took about 1hr to install! Need to remove the tank and side guards! Very easy to install.

Man - I started wondering if I was the only one in the country with a Shadow Spirit 1100. I just got it - spankin new. Man it sucked riding in 40 deg weather, but when you want it bad enough - you grin and bear it. I cant wait for some decent wx. Anyway - take it easy and look forward to talking more 1100 smack.

This is my 1996 1100 realy like this bike it is light and kind of reminds me of sportster choppers of the 60s but no hard tail and no harley vibration . Lots better for the lower spine too. Enough power to do what most would need and still nimble enough to not be tiresome in traffic . slightly overloaded with my wife and me on it but most bikes dont carry 400 lbs. most bikes are only rated to haul my fat ass and a 100 lb passenger and most bikes weigh 200 lbs more. I previously had a xvz1200 Yanaha full fairing and hard bags and hard trunk weighed 200 lbs more than my shadow and was only slightly more comfort to my wife as a passenger. And was a real bear to ride in traffic and in town. I have put about 5000 mile on my shadow since I bought it last july and currently has over 22000 mile on it total ,and still runs sweet. I think most of the people in this forum ride 750s though or it seems that way any way. years ago I rode a CB750 untill it was totaly worn out needed a total rebuild and still would run over 100 mph. Safe riding to all.

Just bought a 2006 Shadow Spirit 1100. I was also beginning to wonder if I was the only one here with an 1100. I am changing the exhaust to Cobra slip-ons and rejetting as soon as everything arrives. I looked for forward controls but they are too expensive, so I made my own brackets and moved the stock controlls forward 3". Cost about 20 bucks.

Anyone in NE Ohio that has any suggestions on good areas to ride? The rain stopped and I'm itching to get out.

Do you have any pictures of your forward control setup? I can't stand how stupid simple little things cost $500, it's insane.

Gonzo, what kind of exhaust is that you have? Are those the V&H pipes for an ACE Tourer?

theshadowknows
06-06-2006, 10:29 PM
I'll take pics as soon as I get the bike back from the shop. 600 miles and an oil leak.

The brackets are just cold rolled steel plate, about 1/2' thick and about 5 1/2" x 5 1/2". The only trickey part is the shifter pedal and the extension for the brake pedal. Other than that, just some sawing and drilling and tapping holes. The shifter pedal has to be cut and a 3" piece welded in. It needs to be positioned in the same area it was originally for the adjusting rod to work. Extending the pedal makes for more travel for shifting. I am going to fix this in the winter when I take everything off to have it plated. I need to cut and weld a piece in to get back to the original ratio of travel in the original setup. I am guessing 3/8" to 1/2" will do the trick, but i need to do the math first.

I made and extension for the brake side also. It goes on the pedal to the brake rod. This is pretty simple to make but you do need access to a milling machine. And you need a spacer to take up the space where the brake pedal used to be.

I moved everything 3" and it is very comfortable. The extra travel on the shift pedal is annoying but you get used to it.

ok, so I don't really need it but am looking at a 97 1100 for about 2900 and am wondering if that sounds like a reasonable price. It has about 34k miles on it and it's super clean. Am going to take it for a ride tomorrow.

I think 2900 sounds about right for that, although i'd try to get him down to 2500...I bought a 97 1100 last october with 16k miles on it, and was also super clean with lots of mods(pipes, floorboards, windshield, etc) and i paid 4200....I totally love everything about the bike, and i don't think you can wrong with a honda....i think you can also check out edmunds.com for used motorcycle prices....Good Luck!

thanks for the info. the bike was at a dealer and they pumped the price up to 3699 by the time I got there. Don't know what I'll do at this point. it was raining so I didn't get to ride it but it sounds great and looks great. seems to have been well maintained and garage kept. am at the point where I am ready to dump some $$$$'s into the "lil critter" vlx or make a change. damn I hate making decisions.

Hi ya all,
I have my second 97 Spirit. I have been out of circulation for about 5 years due to an accident on a tractor. Just getting able to ride again. I plan on doing some major modifications to my Spirit as I did to the last one that ended up at a little over 70 hp and 80 lbs of torque at the rear wheel. This one I will be shooting for 80 - 85 hp and 90 lbs of torque. When this coming spring rolls around this Spirit will be ready to roll when it comes out of my garage in the spring complete with paint.
If anyone is interested in true performance other than jetting and pipes.... let me know for any 97 and up 1100 Spirit..

Well hello there. welcome to shadowriders. it is nice to see an addition to the honda family. i hope that the time you spend here is worthwhile and fulfilling. you are now part of an elite group of people that few ever get to experance being with. your life will no longer be filled with the void that was your life. you will fill your mind, soul, and body with the culture that is shadow riders. EXPECT MUCH!!!!! fellow shadow rider, you have made it. you are now a man!!! Your Balls should be ariving in the mail in 2-3 weeks after man dues are paid. Razor will remove your old week saggy balls (hence the name razor) and you can make an apointment to have Jrod instal the new ones (i wont tell you why that is his name) once that is done you will be a man.

I hear ya. I bought mine off ebay. Went down to Franklin VA, just outside Newport, on 1/8/08. It hit 68 degrees down there that day. Got there at 6:45pm, rode out at 8:00pm. Not bad, coolin quick though, so I spent the night in Richmond. By 9am the temperature had hit the high of 43 and the rain and snow were comin' in from the north, the direction I had to go. I didn't mind a bit. I was takin' a ride with the love of my life. I been waitin' on this girl 23 years brothers. Hat's off to all of us, especially those with enough brass for the big ones.:jamming:

Low and slow on the original 85, first of it's kind and still goin' strong. I have only had her since 1/08 and just rolled 17,000 the other day. Bobbed to a solo, dropped the rear end 3", hacked and chopped Sporty rear fender, Progressive Suspension up front, Jardine for sound, bullet led signals, side mount plate w/double maltese Cross brake/tail, chrome crazy Z drag bars, all blacked out and a rubberized flat finish for the body parts.

Just bought a new 06 1100 spirit. never been titiled and no miles on it when I got it :bucktooth Love it a ton. I do have a couple of questions for my fellow riders. I am 6'4" and 250 lbs. My right foot does not fit well on the right footpeg. BIG feet. What would you recomend? Floorboards? If that is the answer does anyone have any experience with them? How about shifting? can you still stay wiith the conventional shifting or have to change to the heel shifter? One more question, how about the hard luggage rack on the back of the bike behind the small sissy bar? any ideas?

40 thousand trouble-free(so far) miles on a '98 Tourer. Get to ride most of the year in Tenn. Just off the Natchez Trace with countless great backroads.

I just bought a 98 tourer with a little less than 15K on it. It was not running real well over 3000 RPM until I replaced the K&N air filter with a EMGO paper filter. I rode a ST 1100 to Poplar Bluff Missouri early this month and got the 98 tourer shortly after I returned to Washington. My mechanic reccommended this bike and I hope to get a lot of trouble free miles from it.

Just got my 05 Shadow, with 700 miles on it. Took it out for the first time, it was gleaming in the street lights and I was cranked. I backed into the curb, went in and rocked out to the band and when I left a Harley rider was parked next to me. I nodded to him and he made the comment on how much it sucked to ride a Jap bike. It caught me by surprise and I didnt have anything to say.
After that I got to wondering if that was the general feeling about all imports or just Jap bikes in particular. What about other American bikes or is it just the old if it aint a Harley then it aint shit attitude.

Poet Yeah, I live in Washington State in Port Orchard. We have a mild climate and I was able to ride every Month last year, at least a few days. In the seattle area the salt water seems to control the climate and help avoid the extremes. I grew up in Missouri where cold and hot come in extremes.

Same old shit. Harley's look down on Shadows (insert lame reason here ___ ). I had someone tell me to get a real bike once. I said "Are you in junior high school or something? Don't I risk my life enough to be in your g**damn club?" He said "Risk your life?" And I said "Yeah, everytime I get on it - Just like you." Then he said "You've got a nice bike man." So it's not something I take personally anymore. Modify your Shadow to make it yours and people will appreciate it for the work you've put into it. It's all about the ride anyway - all bikers know that to be the truth. And just like this forum - people like to break your balls from time to time, so bottom line: You've got a great bike, take pride in it and people will respect that.

Same old shit ...everyone wants to be better than the other guy and putting someone down is how it's done! Just like this forum! Yep, I'm a fucking noob and when I risk opening my mouth, some dumbshit yells, Fuck Off NOOB! Doesn't matter that I've been riding Honda's since the 70's ...probably from a time that most of you weren't even a sperm yet! If the Harley guy gives you shit, laugh at him. Let him know that with the $1,000's you saved not buying a Harley, you were able to get a bike that starts every time, finishes every ride (without the help of a tow truck), won't rattle the fillings out of your teeth and doesn't leak oil!

I'm a noob to this site and get the same shit from the guys that have been on it for a long while. I'm OK with that and think it's all in good fun. I have been riding Hondas since the mid-60's and am not a novice rider by any means. I joined this site to get more information from like riders and share experience. But, just like in the service or a new job, ya gotta take some shit and earn respect. As far as the Harley guys go, I just smile and let the performance of my 1100 shadow spirit speak for itself. Ever been riding with guys that have Harleys? I have. I leave them in the dust every time. I just smile to myslef. These harley's were 1400's or better. They just could not keep up. On the other hand, I feel any ride is a good one and anyone on a bike is OK with me. Again, let the bike speak for itself.

caleb895.

I have not done any mods to the rear fender, but I did add the Honda OEM rack that mounts above the rear fender and it kind of hides the fender so I am pleased with the look for now.

One thing you can do is look at Honda's other 1100's like the Aero 1100 that has I think 3 different levels of style.

Each level has different tanks, seat, fenders, rims and all should bolt right onto a newer 1100 shadow series motorcycle.

This could be an option for a different look that would only need your credit card and the time to bolts things off and on your ride.

Hope this helps!

Weather broke here in upstate NY but it's rained almost constantly Since April. I did get some riding in this weekend and it was Great! Teaching my SOn to ride on my older 1976 CB750F Super Sport. It's a great way to spend time with your son !

I saw a reply from someone on forward controls here are a couple of picts of the ones I designed and had built out of 3/8" 516 SS. I designed the V-Twin and had it
milled out of the center. Then polished the hell out of it. Needed to extend the brake rod and designed a new custom bent shift rod.

I finally got my saddlebags in and I had to relocate the turn signals for them to fit. I just installed them today. I also fixed the decel popping on my bike, I turned the mixture screw all the way in and then backed it out 3 times since I have a K&N filter, It' purrs now on decel, I thought I would turn it back just a hair to make sure it's not too rich but it popped just a little so i set it back to where I had it.

New to the site not to the Shadow. I just picked up an 86 shadow VT1100. My 2001 750 spirit wasn't enough. The 86 has all the wiring and parts (except for cosmetic because the guys EX took a hammer to it!!. It's all there for the most part but the engine won't turn over, i am pretty sure it's siezed. I am about to order the manual before I do anything. Does anybody have any tips for things to avoid during tear down? I have never dealt with a shaft drive or a bike this old before, but i am up for the challenge. Thanks. (I will post all the pics soon. It keeps saying the file is too big)

Check out the video of the almost finished bike. The last thing I'm going to do is replaint the tank with some old school flames. Let me know what you think.

birdmfc,
Enjoy the new ride! I've had my used 2002 1100 Spirit for 2 years now and I've put over 8000 miles on it. (6000 this year). I've added a bunch of stuff and made custom 4" forward controls to fit my size better. The bike is great! Every time I think about another bike I remember how much fun I'm getting for the $2500 I bought my bike for! (Can't get near a Harley for that price)

Hey there fellow Shadow1100Riders.....glad to see you like your 2002; this cute noob just got herself a 2000 Spirit, and is lovin' it up here in Canada! Couldn't get it up here for no $2500 though - had it brought up from a dude who was visiting in Arkansas this past summer. Now it has to face its first Canadian winter! lol

Nice Bike! Being in upstate NY, our season is almost over also. I did just get out today (Sunday) with the warm weather. I'll ride until the ground starts to freeze.
From your picture, you'll need a bit more cold weather gear in Canada. I'm sure it works great for you in the summer!

Yep.....I do slip into the colder weather gear eventually....my BBF seems to want to discourage me from wearing too much protective gear - wonder about that! He says the girls in Sturgis wear even less when they ride!!
