View Full Version : Handling/cornering effects with lowered rear end

Hi All,
I am considering a 1.5-2" lowering kit for the rear end of the Spirit 750. How much will the lowered rear end effect handling/cornering? Do you notice the pegs dragging a lot sooner?
Thanks.
Tony
Hi:
I cannot comment on the pegs which you could probably get an idea of with a yardstick or large T-square. That said though, dropping the rear end can effect handling because it effects trail/castor of the front wheel and will typically make the bike harder to turn.

I used a 1.5 kit and it made no noticable effects in handling. If there were any they were very subtle.
I dropped mine 2.5 inches front and back, It lowered the middle on the bike close to 1 inch.
Overall the bike handles much better, and it's fine when I'm riding by myself (except some times i'll hit), but 2-up If I go to fast into the turns it'll hit (mostly if there is a bump or a wallow in the turn), My lower pipe has taken a beaten.

That's the main reason that I always modify my exhaust by moving the bottom pipe forward and the top pipe up - plus it just makes 'em a little different

I've always been a fan of lowering the bike equally, front and back, to try to maintain as much balance as possible.

I dropped mine 63.5 mm just on the rear, and I haven't encountered any problems w/ handling or dragging.

well i got 9.5 struts on the rear, i think it lowered my rear end somewhere around 3 inches or so, cause i had the 2.5 scootworks kit on there before the struts, and it was a big ass difference, anyway, i dont ever remember dragging my pegs more than normal, i like to lean into turns pretty hard anyway, so i drag my pegs on a regulay basis as it is, but as far as handling, in my opinion it has improved

same here I got the rear lowered to probably 3 inches...
naturally first thing i noticed is i cant lean into turns as much...
scrap my pipes and pegs all the time.. as far as handling - it handles better
Much like everyone else, I also lowered my ride to 9', no issues on handling but you will prolly drag pegs/pipes if you lean too much. You could also drag your frame and that NO GOOD!

Somethings unusual here. There's too much talk about drags.:uneasy: :kiss2:
i like the way they look lowered, but i wouldn't do mine cause i like going fast through the turns  , crap i need another sport bike

The cornering is probably the biggest issue, IMO. With any serious stretch and rake to your front end, you aren't likely to be hugging a corner anyway, but it took forwever for me to learn to stop dropping into a turn and being prepped to drag puck.
Not only would the pegs and pipe drag, but I don't wear my leathers on the cruiser and dragging a knee would suck a lot without them, lol.
I think this is a mistake made by some peeps. There is a big difference between having a fender close to the tire as supposed to lowering the frame (rear swing arm goes up, frame goes down). Its nice to have the lowered look but there are other factors to consider when lowering. As I said before, if Im lowering the bike I want to compensate for it (different tires, etc).

On the handling tip... How do you think one would handle with the 2.5" lowering kit from Scootworks and the 4" fork extensions from Billski, with no other height mods and no rake changes?

I did home made struts I got from olpanrider (9.5 inches) and 3 inch fork extensions, no rake, and it handles fine, corners fine, never drags pipes or pegs and I love the way it looks and rides now to me it gives the lowered look and does not compromise handling at all, if anything it improved it, although its a little different turning at lower speeds, you get used to it. I also did the VTX mod on the rear wheel, and the wider 200mm tire, which improved the handling to me as well, the wider tire closed up the remaining gap under the rear fender and it seemed to have lowered the RPM's a little without having to change any sprockets.

before I raked I lowered with the 11" progressives and IMO in cornering I seemed to have more control....I attrubite this "control" to the fact that I lowered the specific gravity of my bike in the ass end ...yeah,yeah, yeah I know thats not physics..so maybe it was just a mental thing...either way i was way more confident in tighter cornering with a lower ass end...now with the rake and 3" fork extensions I wouldn't dare corner with the same speed as with just the ass lower...something in the back of my mind says "wipe-out" ...I suppose common sense plays a part...that said if you wanna hug corners at break-neck speed then do it in the dirt from on high...

Lower that baby down. I still ride my VTX and the wife rides her SS750, both lowered, like they're on rails. Maybe we're just nuts though. But, after I got her bike dialed in, it rides like a champ.

Depends how aggressive you ride. I have 11' shocks with a 2.5 lowering kit. 18 x 5.5 out back wrapped with a 200. I do have a steel fender though and mine rides like a bullet. My right mapam is almost burned off. Hell, I burned the stock peg off before I lowerd it. My pipes scrape before the peg. As long as you dont drag the frame your good. You may think your close to the ground but your not. Have a buddy tilt the bike over as far as it will go. You'll see that its a pretty steep angle before you would hit the frame. You'd probably ride on your rims first.

Heres a shot of me doing some casual riding :) I'm about to bank into a sharp left. You can see the peg is no where near the ground, neither is the frame.

I agree with you Eric. It takes a helluva lean to scrap the frame. I would think at that point of lean you would almost low side an SS750.

Absolutely. I take my ass off the seat a bit when I'm takin a sharp corner. Left side scrape the pegs. right side, drag the pipes. I've replaced my HK exhaust tip twice now :)
Hey I wanted you to see this VTX. Hang on, brb with some pics....

Yeah Bro! That is a sick VTX for sure. He is on AzPhats.com. That bike is going to be great when it's done. There is another on that site that is going to be awesome too! People have a shit load into those bikes and it shows. Me, I like what I did to mine. Now it's time to get back into the sportbike scene for a while. I missed them for 3 years. Now I have the pleasure of having the VTX and the CBR.

I have 1.5 lowering kit and 4" extensions and my bike handles great. I dont drag shit anymore but did before the extensions

i must agree with epic here. i lowered my bike 2.5 as well and there is no noticicable difference in handling. how ever because i made mine rigid i do notice that into a turn if there are any bumps my back end sometimes will skirt along sideways. after the first couple of times ( and scaring the shit out of me ) i am aware of it now and i enter into turns a bit slower and my cautious. before i lowered my bike i dragged pegs more. now that it is lowered i don't. just knowing that makes me more alert .
