I doubt many people will agree with me, but I think that there should be more laws against loud pipes. The phrase "loud pipes save lives" is a crock of shit and IMO loud pipes just annoy people and give the rest of us a bad image.

The Spirit 750 I currently own is only the second bike I've ever owned. My first bike was a Suzuki S40. On the S40, I cut the stock muffler off and put an Emgo "muffler" on it (which was really just a straight pipe), and that fucker was LOUD. I thought it was pretty damn cool for all of about 5 minutes until I realized it was either wear ear plugs when I rode or go completely deaf.

The reason I'm saying all of this and the reason I decided to start this thread is because yesterday I was riding around town and there was a guy on a Harley at a stoplight in front of me as I pulled up to it. This guys exhaust was so loud it was rediculous. Anyway, the light turns green and he takes off nearly deafening me and everyone else around. I ride behind him for a little bit and as we approach the next stoplight I decide I don't wanna be behind this fucker and his obnoxious pipes anymore so I get in the other lane and end up side-by-side with him at the next stoplight. He looks over, sees my apes and says (at the top of his lungs) "I like those bars, where'd you get 'em?". I scream back "Online at Cruiser Performance". "Cool man, I'll check 'em out. See ya!"

As I rode the short distance back to my house, I asked myself "What the fuck is the point of having an exhaust as loud as that?" At one time I considered some Cobra's for my Spirit but I realized I LIKE my bike to be quiet and decided to keep my stock pipes. For one, people don't give me dirty looks because my bike is causing their ears to bleed, and two I ride my motorcycle to relax and just don't see how that's possible when your exhaust is setting off every car alarm in the neighborhood.

I turned 30 this year and maybe I'm getting old or something. I don't know. I'm sure that the debate over loud pipes will go on forever, but I just wanted to put my 2 cents in about the whole thing.

Later.

Wow, this is a subject I wasn't expecting to see at 8AM on a Sunday... ballsie.

With that said... most states have laws already on the books for exhaust noise with both motorcycles and autos, and usually have a dB limit for them to be legal. The simple fact is that most of the time, cops simply choose not to enforce this when its a blatant violation. In an interesting coincidence, if any car was that loud, they'd be pulled over almost every day.

There is a difference between "louder than stock" and "open sewer pipes" for exhaust, so I kinda agree with you about this.

If my bike had stock exhaust when I bought it, I would've changed it out, but I wouldn't have gone for a complete open exhaust just for that reason. As it is, it came with the Cobra 1 5/8" Drag Pipes, which have a nice rumble to them without being too obnoxious. Even with that, I replaced the existing baffles with some replacement 12" baffles to keep the popping down on decel.

i like the rumble of my cobra's, but still wanted a little more so i cut them down real short. now it has that perfect potato sound. people actually think it's a harley coming down the road. i do agree that too loud is obnoxious, but still to a degree want to be heard coming down the road. i do think that to an extent, loud pipes do save lives, and also loud horns. thats why i installed a big ass air horn on my bike......as well.

i am curious what others have to ay about this.... good topic gene......

I went out with 5 harleys yesterday. 3 of us have aftermarket exhaust, 2 stockers that have a rumble to them and 1 vrod quiet as a mouse. After riding with these guys i have come to the conclusion there is two types of loud.....

Loud #1 - Your exhaust is loud, but you tend to just ride normally with your loud pipes. You ride the speed limits and dont over rev the engine. You ride it like you would a goldwing. Just out enjoying yourself.

Loud #2 - Your exhaust is loud, you tend to show the entire town that your exhaust is loud. You drag race off every single red light and stop sign you can find. You try to beat 0-60 times every chance you can get. You sit at stop lights and red line the engine spewing black smoke and back fire just to see how loud you can get it. You are one word : annoying.

2 of the guys i rode with were loud #2. I thought for sure if we ran across a cop in one of the towns we went through we were gonna all get pulled over. They were just being annoying retards with their pipes all day. I was actually glad to break from them in the afternoon and go elsewhere with my bud and his vrod.

The rest of the group with the stocker exhausts were loud, but they werent revving the piss out of them at every chance. I like my bike loud, but i am not an annoying ass with the sound. I let it rip on back country roads, but in small towns, i try to take it easy.

I have to agree. Too loud is obnoxious. I want something on my bike that will give it a nice rumble, but not let my neighbors know I'm coming from a mile away.

Here's the rules for Massachusetts (although as stated, police don't always enforce them):

My motorcycle was failed for illegal pipes. What's legal?

Generally speaking, you must have a baffle in the exhaust system of a motorcycle. Straight pipes are illegal, and your motorcycle must meet certain noise requirements. For motorcycles manufactured before 1986, 102 decibels is the legal limit, 99 decibels for motorcycles manufactured after 1986.

I work with a guy that has a Honda Civic, he put one of those tin can mufflers on it and got a ticket twice in one week. He ended up taking it off. Funny thing is, it wasn't even as loud as 90% of the bikes on the road!

Sorry, But I like my loud pipes... But I would fit more in to "Loud #1"

I just got back from a MC rally today. Most of the people that had pipes on were #2 loud. But they would just set at thier campsite and rev the Holy Bejeezus out of the engine. I can be a 1 & 2, depending on who I am riding with and what kind of mood I am in. I like loud pipes though.

I like my loud pipes! I bought this bike used and the previous owner had dressed it up with more chrome and with V&H Straightshots. I do always try to courtious with them though. In the morning when I start it up to go to work I know others are still sleeping. I fire it up and adjust the choke so the idle is low and take off right away and without gunning it. In a parking lot I know they will set off alarms so I keep it down. But when I am splitting lanes in heavy L A traffic it is sometimes necesary to make my presence known. They also drown out the rest of the world so I can have some peace and quiet. I sometimes use the saying "Speed is the essence of tranquility" but loud pipes work too.

I'd also say I'm a little bit of 1 & 2. I went on a run today with about 25 other bikes. I was probably about 10 years younger than everyone else, so I played the role of Mr. #1. But when I left the clubhouse to go back home I opened her up once I got on the highway.I wouldn't have made the pipes loud if I didn't want to hear them every now and then. And I always wear ear plugs. Not because of the pipes, but because of the windnoise. I find I can hear a lot better with them in.

Gene, if its TOO LOUD then your TOO OLD. To each his own, I love the noise I got drag cars that are street/strip and they would but most bikes to shame with the sound they make, your chest hurts when I go by. Thats how I choose for my toys to sound. I dont have them out before 11am and there all put away by 11pm so Im not disturbing anyone but people like you! You most likely wear a pink helmet too, am I right? anyway keep your bike quiet and I'll keep mine loud and you can go tell your mommy that your ears hurt!!!:jamming:

Im not saying loud is bad lol..... mine is loud too and when its warm i yank the baffles out. I just tend to not race to every light and make it so loud in town that it pisses everyone off. In the country though .... ROOOAARRRR :)

I went on a ride with a Fat Boy HD yesterday, we passed by some bikers in a driveway, they all had big 300 tire bikes, probably $40,000+ each. They were all revving their engines, blowin dirt into the road as we rode by, so I opened mine up and the funny thing is, their bikes didn't sound any better than mine! I just laughed knowing that my bike cost about as much as their tires and wheels did!

I love my burbs, wouldn't trade them for any pipes. I can be 1 and 2 on days. At night when I get out of work, I wait to get through any towns or residential areas before opening her up, but those pipes sure keep the deer away!:jamming:

My bike came with V&H Straightshots and no baffles. It sounded good at idle, but ridiculously loud even with earplugs and a full face helmet.

I added the V&H Big Shot quiet baffles, and it dropped the decibels but the bike still has a mean sound.

I ride year round, and leave early/come home later, so I try to keep noise to a level that wont bother the neighboors.

I'd have to put myself in category #1, with an occasional bit of category #2 slipping out. I know that loud pipes bother some people, but I try to respect them while still allowing myself the pleasure of having my bike look and sound the way I want it to. I often wonder what their complaint is as I sit in my house on a nice summer day and listen to my neighbor's lawnmowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers and weed eaters! Not to mention all the teenagers running around on their scooters(which sound like chainsaws!) with no regard for traffic laws or pedestrians. Of course why should they, when they don't even need a driver's license to ride one!
