I've read over at Ace of Spades that an 02 CBR F4i 17" front wheel is pretty much a bolt on onto the SS750. Even the speedo will work, supposedly.

My question is the ones that I've found are for a dual disc setup. What do you do about the right side of the wheel? Just leave the holes open?

Well, I took a chance and got these off of Ebay today. Hope it works. Getting ready for next winters mods.

Wow ! Great price . I can't wait to see it done . I like the disc on the back instead of the drum . It really opens the back end up . I am considering the Exile mod myself .

I saw those and I could think of better things to do with $700. They are sweet though. There was also some confusion if they would even fit since everything I saw was for a Harley wheel, even though they were listed in the metric section.

First thing that's gonna be done is strip, sand and polish

Ok got the next piece of the puzzle. That should be it for the major components, a 03 600RR rear set. The rest is small stuff.

AirportFF

Well, the rims and brake assembly arrived the other day. I'm gonna concentrate on the front first. So tomorrow it's off to get bead blasted. Then the sanding and polishing will start. Haven't decided on what the actual finish will be polish, chrome, or powder.

The hardest part is gonna be getting the speedo to work, since the CBR speedo runs off of the transmission. But after speaking with some folks on TSW and AOS. There is a relatively easy solution.

Since the wheel is 17" and the stocker is 19" gotta either find a tire that is REALLY tall or make up a couple brackets to lower the fender down so there isn't a huge gap there.

While I'm working on the front, the rear will be out getting blasted along with the rear caliper mount and caliper. I'm thinking gloss black powder on the caliper and mount, since they would be a bitch to polish. The rear wheel is 17 x 5.5" so I'm looking for suggestions on rear tire options. I'd like to keep the rear tire the same overall diameter and since this is a 17" wheel and the stock is 15" I don't know what sidewall aspect to look for. So any input on this would help.

And since the rear cush drive is a 6 bolt. Ken Corcoran is going to be hooking me up with a 40t rear sprocket. The man is great to deal with, we bullshitted on the phone today about half an hour. I'm gonna give him an invite over here so folks can get to know him.

I think Ken was on the old site, but I remember him from the HondaShadow.net site. He owns a machining/manufacturing company doesn't he?

I don't know if he was there or not. He makes sprockets for TSW guys since everyone gets screwed on a regular basis from sprocket specialists.
He does own a machine shop up in New Hampshire and does the sprockets on the weekends with a buddy of his.
I told him to come over here and introduce himself. And we're going to hook up at Americade for a few beers.

That is great . I am impressed with the project . I think it would be great if a few more TSW guy came to visit . I took some time off from that site . I might take some time off this one . Come back in a week or 2 and it is all fresh and new again . When the fish are hitting I might be quit'en so don't worry I will be back . What ever happened to Punisher ?

In order to get the speedo to work with the CBR front rim. I will need to notch the rim for the drive ring. No Biggie, sounds worse than it is. Thanks to Jim at AOS he found a hydraulic seal that will fit the CBR front and the speedo drive. So that hurdle is crossed.

Went to the aircraft machine shop yesterday and had the guy make me up a 25mm OD x 20mm bushing for the rear caliper mount. So that's done.

I'll go out and buy a cheap disposable camera to document this. It looks so far like it's going to be a fun project. I'll do a full tutorial with pics upon completion.

Front and rear rotors, rear caliper mount and cush drive are at the powder coaters. Should be done tomorrow. Gonna get the liquid black finish. The cush is just getting bead blasted. Going to keep the rear caliper the stock gold color since it matches the colors on her bike

The stuff is back from powder. They did a great job. They did two rotors, caliper mount, and bead blasted the cush drive for $50 and they were actually done last night at about 8pm

The front came back yesterday. Holy shit he did a great job on it. Went out this morning and got the tire mounted and balanced. (used a Bridgestone Battlaxe BT45 110/90-17) Looks like it'll fit perfect under the front fender. Since the camera is packed, I'll pick up a disposable to document the swap. We're in the process of moving, but hopefully I'll get to it on Monday or Tuesday.

Alright kiddies, The front is mocked up.

Getting the wheel centered in the forks is a real trick. I have photos of the whole process. This isn't for the faint of heart. Be prepared for a little grinding on your speedo hub  What needs to be done is the rim needs to be shifted 1/4" to the riders left. Finding areas of metal to remove to get that is tricky. A little from the rim hub, the outside face of the speedo hub, the speedo center spacer on the inside, the speedo stop for the forks..........you'll see in the pics.

YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE A 120 TIRE, IT WILL NOT FIT IN THE FENDER MOUNTS!!!!!! A 110 is the only one that will fit.

You will also need to make a bigger spacer for the right side. The stock spacer comes up about 3/16" short. Luckily the CBR rims I got came with the spacers. I doubled up on them using a stock front and one of the rear ones. It's just a temp fix until I can get a stainless spacer made.

The speedo drive assembly is another adventure. The pictures will tell that tale.

I still need to space the caliper mount to the right a little. That's tomorrows project.

Total time...about 2 1/2 hours. But keep in mind that most of my tools are packed. I was working with a file, die grinder and dremel. If I had my tools here probably would have been about an hour and a half.

I'll get it done tomorrow and post the pics and step by step on another thread that way it doesn't get lost in the confusion.

Did ya have to grind the inner or outer side on the speedo hub? Spacing the caliper over with a couple of washers should work that is if the bolts are still long enough. About not getting the 120 in there. Ya think ya could grind the subframe mounts on the lowers down a little and going with a different fender would work? I look forward to some pics!!

Yea I had to grind the inside and outside of the speedo hub you'll see in the pictures.

I'm gonna need longer bolts for the caliper, and washers should work to space it for now. Until I get my drill press set up.

About the 120, right now I have about 3/16" clearance on each side of the fender mounts. You might be able to grind down the mounts, but I was concerned about making them too weak. As far as a different fender, yea you could go with a new fender. But remember we just had this bike painted, so that option was out the window.

That's bad-ass. Good job. Think that bigger CBR brake will be better? Has it been road tested yet? It's gotta change the way bike feels somewhat.

AirportFF
05-24-2005, 07:21 PM
That's the stock caliper with the CBR rotor. The diameter is the same for both. Just that the cbr rotor isn't offset as much as the stocker. That's why you have to space the caliper over.

Haven't had it out yet since the weather has been shitty all week. My biggest concern is the durability of the seal used for the speedo hub. A couple folks on ace of spades said that they have over 500 miles so far and no problems.

RustyJake
05-24-2005, 08:34 PM
The seal, is it just the dust seal? Most of the seals on the front end ouf our bikes are just "double lip" lip seals. (metric of course). Mainly designed to keep water and dust out. They are used on electric motors and pumps, etc. RPM's on some of them are similar to what you'd see in the front end of a bike. Sticking with name brands, like Chicago Rawhide (CR), or John Manville (JM Clipper) or even a National seal you should be good for a long time. When I got my front wheel they forgot to send one of the seals, I ended up using a seal that I got locally.
Being tubless , I found that my front tire was a lot 'smoother' over the bumps. Not sure if it's just the size change or the brand of tire or the fact it's tubeless.
BTW, great job on the pictured tutorial!

It's actually a hydraulic wiper seal. The guy that told me about it says that he has absolutely no problems with it so far. And it fit perfect. And for $1.83 I couldn't go wrong.

I'm gonna reshoot the pics for the tutorial when we get settled in the house. That way everything is bit clearer.

That's the seal, you'll be fine for lots of miles on the one you bought. Hydraulic people have 100's of names for the same thing. I sell those seals where I work now. If you are looking for better protection, just ask for a double lip seal and you'll have two sealing edges on the ID of the seal.

Took her bike out today. Had to get it out of the old house and into storage.

It was a very unsettling feeling giving it it's first test run on an open hiway. Everything went great, the turning felt a little tighter with the smaller circumferance front tire, and the speedo is about 4mph off according to the cruise control in Susan's truck.

So I would have to give this mod a very big thumbs up. :thumb: Total spent for the front only.

Wheel with rotors, bearings, spacers 150.00
Polishing 125.00 (optional)
Powder coating 15.00 (optional)
Misc Parts and seals 15.00
Tire 80.00

Total time to do the swap.......about 1.5 hrs if you have the right tools

Anyone has any questions feel free to ask.
