This is the coolest thing I’ve done to my bike so far…well, in my opinion.
So let’s get to it!
Please remember you must rejet for a mod like this.
This should take about 2 hours or so, just remember to take your time.
First you need to own a Shadow VT700 (I think the 800 had this airbox too) Sorry you VT1100 owners, this mod’s not for you.
Second you need some carb parts (I used the butterfly and shafts out of 3 Mikuni carbs from an old Yami)<O:p</O:p
3 drain pipes from your local hardware store.<O:p
1 piece of cable<O:p
1 cable connection/lever and the support for the cable end ( I got saved all of that from the old carbs.)<O:p
and of course the airbox, all shown here…<O:p
Cut your shafts down and weld them together to make one shaft.<O:pNow slip the butterfly’s into place, now you know how far apart to space your holes on the airbox. <O:p
My support came from the one in the last pic

In this part you take your hole saw and cut your three holes. BE sure you measure twice first and then cut once, cuz it’s really hard to fix it if you mess up. I started with the center hole and worked out from there.
Then you drill you side holes for the butterfly shaft, I did this in stages, moving from a small drill bit up to the size I needed. Once again make sure everything is centered before you drill.
Next you take and grind the edges of the outer pipe smooth on one side, and on two sides for the center. This is so the pipes can set next to one another closely when mounted in the box.
Then you drill all the way through the side of each pipe on the side you have just ground smooth, this is for the butterfly shaft.
And the final two steps on this part is to cut the pipes down, and put in an angle cut. This is so you have clearance for the air filter.

Now your almost there! :luxhello: :luxhello:
Take your pieces and put them into place, then run a rod through to make sure all the holes line up. I used an drill bit extension for this part.<O:p</O:p
The next pic shows what is should look like so far.
Now take your shaft slip it into place, insert your butterfly’s and screw them into place.
The final pic shows the completed assembly.
But you’re not done yet…

Now take the bracket that holds the cable end and trim it down, you will need to mount this to the backside of the airbox before you are done.
Next take the metal bracket that holds the filter in place and trim the front part off. You need to do this so the new assembly will have the proper clearance to seal the box and for the butterfly’s to operate properly.
Almost there! :thumb:
Now remove the rest of the airbox assembly from the bike.
Remove the snorkel, and block it off with a plate, otherwise the added air rushing in from the front will go right on through and out this passage instead of into you carbs.
Now take all your pieces and put them back on the bike, to connect the other side of the cable to the throttle I just used the metal out of an electrical connector. Just remove the plastic housing, and open it up along the seam, then slip it over the two cables and crimp. It’s not too permanent of a connection should you decide to change throttle cables in the future.
The final picture shows you what it should look like on the bike!
I sure hope you have rejetted your carbs before doing this, otherwise your engine will backfire when you let off the throttle and sputter when you get on the gas.
I also hope these instructions will give you a good basis to go on, I had to wing the whole thing and change some ideas as I went along. If you have something else in mind and you think it will work, I say go for it!

Have fun and enjoy the mod!

What an awesome mod. What kind of performance boost did you get? My VT700C is all stock and I am looking to do some mods this winter and this will probably be one of them.

Welcome to the site! I'll spare you both the usual FUCK OFF NOOB!
Oh what the hell...
FUCK OFF NOOBS!!

Now down to business...
ase175 & js83shadow, thanks for the comps!:wink_2:
As far as suggestions....what ever you want to do. Really, these bikes may be old, and you might not be able to get all the goodies on the market today, but don't let that stop you.
Just get a picture in your mind of what you want your bike to look like and do it.
SeaBass is makin' his own bars, and lang lopped off his guage cluster, and as you can see I hacked up my airbox.
If you can make something work, like mirrors, side mount, then go for it. :thumb:
Your imagination and drive to get the job done are your only limitations...and sometime the pocket book too.
If you've got questions, there are more than enough folks on here who can answer them.

An outstanding mod. Looks great! Now, as to carb rejetting...this airbox mod will make a lot more air available, so therefore I assume the carb mixturre would now be too "lean", i.e. too much air, not enough gas - am I right so far? Can you achieve the right fuel/air mix by adjusting the factory jets, or do you need different ones?

Is it really necessary to have the butterflies attached to the throttle cable? I would think the vacuum increase of feeding a larger mixture to the engine would cause the vacuum inside the "hypercharger" to rise and open the butterflies?

What kind of air cleaner element did you start off with?

Thanks

Something i'd suggest would be to make some sort of cover for it also. Idk if you avoid the rain like the plague or not but that'd suck if you got water in there.

went to remove airbox cover, bolts spin with some resistance but do not come loose, any ideas? Also does anyone have a procedure to remove the airbox, I need to get it out of the way to remove the rest of the wire harness.

Check out Lowe's or even Home Depot's sites.....I know ours on Saturday mornings have 'young builder' workshops my youngest son and my 7 yr old nephew found them very helpful. You might ask them if they have any idea's how to back out a spinning bolt.

If not.....try putting a little outward prying pressure on the item being held on by the bolt and 'slowly' start backing it out until it catches a thread. If still not happening.....sacrifice the bolt by removing it's head, slide the air box off and vise grip the remaining bolt piece out and visit your neighborhood Honda stealer for a replacemnt!

I remember seeing a few blower units for modern 1100's on the net someplace about a year or so ago, unfortunatly i got an 86 and there were no units for them available. Has anyone on here ever mounted a blower/compressor/supercharger on their 86 by any chance? Would be interesting to know how that works out.

You will Deffinetly have to rejet the carbs with larger jets, adjusting the mixture screw just isnt enough. the butterflies would open on there own, but would not close. and you do want to restrict air flow at lower engine RPM's and throttle opening.

I removed the airbox from my 1985 VT700C. I added these clamp-on air filters from eBay. I also relocated the fusebox under the tank.http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp99/warpathpd/downsized_0531012005a-1.jpg
