By popular demand, we got approved as a dealer of ACC's carbon fiber helmets. See them at http://www.carbonfiberhelmets.com/. These are VERY small and light, but still DOT compliant.
Deal:
Take 16% off the web posted MSRP and add $8 per helmet for freight to the lower 48. All sales are final - Maryland law won't let me take a helmet back once it's left te shop, be it for exchange or otherwise.
Payment:
PayPal to mike at hsgear dot biz by Sunday, 10/29 at midnight. Order goes in the morning of Monday, 10/30.
Have fun and enjoy.

can you do a german helmet in a dot approved version?

I don't make them - if it's on the ACC site, it's do-able. If not, nope. The most popular are the extended DOT in natural black and the polo in black.
And yes, they do look much better - no mushroom head, no Spaceballs, etc...

That's what I ride, from www.jafrum.com (http://www.jafrum.com) I like it, although it's mushroom cloud head on a bike, I like the feeling of SOME safety on my skull...

I would like to see a pic of the inside of the one's mic posted...i've seen too many places just slap a dot sticker on...which btw doesn't make the helmet legal...my dad found out first hand to the tune of 100 bucks 20 fine 80 court costs

yep thats the one I was asking bout. notice the second pargraph on that page.
Don't be fooled by cheaper carbon fiber helmets or outright fake carbon fiber. These Motorcycle helmets are manufactured to take full advantage of the materials physical properties. These helmets are 10 times stronger and 30% lighter than any fiberglass helmet available today. These are real carbon fiber not an imitation. These helmets are not DOT approved

These really are DOT approved helmets. I've read about them and seen them at shows. From what I've heard, they're worth every penny. I think I'm gonna try and slip one by the wife...$$:jamming::jamming:
I wanted to clarify that ony the ones on the DOT page are DOT, not the german ones... I thought they made DOT german ones also, but I guess not....

I'm pretty sure they are all the same price, but let me look and see if I can verify that. I looked into these the first of the year, but they are a bit $$, so I had to hold off. I'm glad I saw this post, cause I'm tellin a few other buds about it and tryin to get a couple!! (No german for me though. I'm afraid it will catch the wind too bad at high speed and pull on my head...)
Okay, if you click on the link that says "Prices and sizing" from the NON-DOT page, you'll see that these are less expensive than the DOT, but still $$

I'm in for a polo in natural CF/Kevlar. Thanks Doc!
I'd been looking at these for a couple of months. Your group buy and some $$ I wasn't expecting made pulling the trigger nice and easy. Now to wait for spring. :)

Glad to be of service. ACC makes both DOT and novelty helmets. The DOT's are a little thicker, but still NOWHERE near the size of say an HJC or SkidLid. I don't make them, but you can be sure there's one in the order for my noggin. I like 'em!

I am looking for a different half helmet than the two I currently have. Anybody who purchased this carbon fiber helmet willing to share their opinion of it?

What kind do you have now? I would imagine the carbons are great, at least until your head hits the ground. I've looked at a ton of helmets, and used a bunch. Gotta go for quality and REAL DOT approval. I've spent enogh time in MX helmets that I know how important they are, but (so far) I refuse to rock a full face on my SS. I had a nice light, polo style DOT helmet and it was a piece of crap; uncomfortable and just didn't feel like it offered any protection. Some of my buds have those carbon fibre salad bowls and, DOT, SNELL, or nothing, they just look like they wouldn't do their job when you need it to. I ended up spending the cash on a Bell Drifter and although at first I felt like the Great Kazoo, that goes away. It has the army helmet styling, it's comfy and you can tell it's a quality lid. Unfortunately, if the worst happens, you can't get a prosthetic head installed. My .02.

Ok, I have to let you all know a little something about helments. I only say this because I am a motorcycle instructore in the state of Wa. DOT helments are not that great! They have a false since to them, because thats what the law preaches. If you do some research on DOT helmets you will be beside your self to find out that just about all DOT helments are not tested. The Co, that makes them is given a guild line in which to make them by in order for them to list their helment as a DOT helment. That does not mean that after a person makes one that it is tested. DOT only tests random and not very offten.
SNELL: in order for a co. that makes helments to have snell on them, they have to send in their helment and pay to have it tested and it coast big bucks! thats why one you will not see flip up face helments or half or even 3/4 helments with snell on them. Second a snell helment will always coast way more then a DOT helment, because the Co. that made it paid to have thiers tested.
So don't fall into that...well I will be ok if the worst happens because I have a DOT helment. Not so true. That Dot sticker just means the Co. that made it follow per say a guid line to be able to put that sticker on it.

I got a Hd-5054 Polo, M/L in natural Carbon/Kevlar but unfortunately it is a bit too small for my noggin. Seems to be a real nice lid. Simple foam liner (two different thicknesses) about 2" or so wide that circles inside the rim and velcros on, plus a 4 leaf clover shaped liner at the crown. Nice clip on the chin strap.
I got it after the riding season ended up here in MN and didn't really test it out till the spring, when it was too late to return/exchange it. If it had fit I'm sure it would have been worn on the weekend rides instead of the backwards ball cap. I ended up using my RJ Air w/ a 5 snap shield since most of my riding was commuting to and from work and I needed protection from the road grime the caggers threw up off the pavement.

You're totally right. The SNELL endorsement is definately more important than DOT Like you also said, very few helmets carry it anymore (for the reasons you gave and because it's not a mandatory guideline) and over the past few years, the price has become outrageous on many SNELL approved helmets. I wasn't saying that a helmet with a DOT sticker on it is going to for sure save your life, just that it's better than most of those "novelty" helmets. My Bell is obviously a better lid than my HJC Polo and they're both DOT approved.

The two half helmets I have are a Bell Drifter and a THHH. I don't care for either but prefer the Drifter over the THHH. The Drifter is noisy and wants to lift off my head unless I have the death grip on the chin strap. What I was looking for was comments about the ACC helmet here: http://www.carbonfiberhelmets.com/ For what it's worth my favorite cold weather helmet is the Nolan N42 open face helmet.

Ya, the looks of the Nolan N42 open face helmet suck but it is relativly quiet, comfortable and good for cool/cold weather. I would like to shorten the process of finding a good half helmet so I don't end up buying a room full. The ACC looks the most promising and the appear to have a good return policy. So, does any Shadow Rider actually have the ACC helmet and what is your opinion?

I have one of the DOT carbon fiber helmets and it is a very light helmet. Lots thinner than a regular half hat. It will want to lift off of your head at speed unless you pull the front down close to your eyes. Although this does help to keep the sun out of your eyes. Over all I am pleased. purchaseed mine from carbonfiberhelmets.com

Thanks for the heads up and e-mail RV03, I've explored the halfshell carbon fiber and other than the price....well, I ended up with a original skid lid....my wife rides with the drifter, we both have fly shields on our bikes and never have a problem with our lids trying to roll back into our necks because of the uplift from the wind, no matter the speed.....before I did the fly shield my lids always were a problem when I was crusin at highway speeds, unless I cinched em into a death-grip at my throat......

i've been thinkin about getting one of these carbon fiber helmets too.
that shit is pretty steep for a fuckin halfy though.....
i don't know why (maybe it's cuz my slant eyes are more aerodynamic) but i've never really had a prob w/ my helmet pullin back on my head. i think maybe once when i didn't put the thing on right or something, but i wear mine real low on my brow anyways, plus i wear a bandana under it which i think helps keep it in place.

it's the eyes that do it? maybe that's why I squint so much. Do you notice a change if you don't hold your mouth right?
nah, i don't really have any probs w/ my helmet. i rock a cheap ass helmet i found at a local stealer for like $35. it's dot, but that doesn't really mean shit (as stated earlier in this thread).
it's the smallest dot i could find locally and it sits where i put it, no issues w/ it whatsoever.
