I opened up my carbs this morning just to post jet info for my bucks down air filter mod. Ran fine after yesterday's incident (read: Jokes and funny stuff, This Could only Happen to Me) but now seems to stumble on the top end. Riding at 70mph in top gear If I get on it, it pulls strong up through 80mph, then it seems to lose something, but it pulls, I can't tell if it's leaning out up there, if it's too rich, or possibly the rev limiter killing me. Anyone know how I can hook up a tach so I can get a better idea of where exactly the loss is taking place? :help:

CW,

Sorry if I should already know, but what machine is is?

Before you make the next move...replace the fuel and check for any vacuum leaks around the boot/s slash intake. Just retrace your steps.

You'll have to know if the rev limiter was part of an issue beforehand and remove it from the list of possibilities before adding it to it....ok?

Simply performing carb work should not affect any electrical component as the RL.

I think I got it, the tube going to the fwd carb was not seated in the airbox correctly. 2003 ss750 though. I'm going to ride it in the a. m. to check it.

I only brought up the rev limiter as a possiblity because no hemet laws here + wind noise, & screaming engine makes it kinda tough to hear anything specific.

Did you figure out your problem ? I am still getting a little sputter with my intake .

I missed the tach question, but a member of another forum I visit, Diceman, has documented a tach install...

most I've installed used the coil for the signal as he describes.

but

I'm not exactly 100% sure on how the rev limiter functions, but I believe it cut's the signal to the coil/s to prevent possible over-rev damage. If that's the case I don't think the tach will be of much use.

Sin....

Do you mean hesitation?

Sort of . The work I did chaged things a bit . My gears are way taller . I don't shift out of 1st till about 30mph or so and I can do an easy 40mph in second . In third I was up to 65/70 mph .4th was into 95 with out a sweat . 5th is just a suggestion at this point . At the middle to top of each gear I get surges . The power is a little inconsistant . I think I might still be lean . I backed out the fuel/air mix screws about a 1/2 to 3/4 yesterday [ I am now around/ up to 2 to 2 1/4 out ] that helped me from dieing at idel . I still get a little popping on decel .

Mr.Sinister,
The mixture screws don't have a thing to do with your surging at the top of the gears, they only adjust your idle mixture. If you haven't rejetted, you'll need to. If you have rejetted, you'll want to go with a bigger yet main jet and possibly move the clip to a groove farther from the top of the needle. The surging you describe is from a lean engine.

Thank you . I was hoping that would not be the answer . I am running a FP 132/135 Set up . I think that that was the smallest in the stage three kit ? I do think I have bigger jets ....?????
