I hated the stock Sportster wannabe air filter housing, and by the way hate chrome. I wanted more of a look of function than finish. I really liked the stock wire covered filter, and decided to just use it without a cover. I removed the stock cover, cut a 1/8 thick piece of Al exactly the size of the filter, then cut a triangle out of it so it would fit the stock elbow duct and glued it together with some sealant. (self explanitory once you take the stock cover off) Then made some clips out of .016" stainless like those used to hold filters down on to Webers on old VW's. Then installed a new filter. The stock set up has the air pass from the inside of the filter out. If you re-use the stock one the incomming air will take all the debris in the filter with it directly into the motor.

That is a fresh idea ! How does it affect jetting ?What are you running pipes wise ?

That's a new one. I like it. Any performance increase? Get us a picture of the whole bike so we can see how it looks as a whole. Good job. Oh yeah and:

GO CANES!

I have Cobra drag pipes with modified baffles (I'll post this mod in the future), advanced the initial spark timming about 5 degrees, I rejetted when I put it all together and don't remember which jets I used. (I took a box of assorted ones from my brother and just kept trying until it worked.) Runs like hell for a 750, but I can only run Sunoco 91 and higher or Cheveron 93 without a power drop at part throttle or detonation up higher in the rev's. Pictures of the whole bike can be seen in the garage, I just updated it.

I pulled the carbs out and took a look, dj136 & dj138 mains, the idle jets are 40S' s and the mixture screws are backed out 3.5 turns. Also the needles look stock and I had drilled a small #40 hole through the slide.
