I know most of you guys don't really care for tachs and I like the clean look too. I used to be a jet engine mechanic and I am used to having a buttload of info about the engines while thier running on the test cell. I am new to bikes/cruisers (love my new spirit) and I sure would like to know whats going on between my legs - besides just sound and feel! Any thoughts on mini tachs, temp etc

I have thought about doing this to mine as well. But I find even when riding my sons New Yamaha R6 Sport bike which has a tach I really dont look at it and use it. I use the feel and hear method. I Love cruisers and rode them most of my life and never really had a tach so it could be that I'm so used to riding without one as well. Just my two cents.

You really only need a tach for tuning. The aftermarket tachs I've seen are not accurate enough for tuning purposes, so they wouldn't be of any help there. You'd still need a "tune-up" tach to hook up while making carb adjustments. Just my opinion!

I know, I know, I don't have an 1100, so you can tell me to go away if you want. :stop: Tach's? I have one and I'm torn, it's handy for dialing in your idle speed, but it clutters up things...but of course I have a dummy light panel on mine too...:undecided
I don't even look at it when ridin', like Shadow1100Guy, I use the feel and hear method.

I used to be a Ducati rider, and had a tach on my tweaked out 999 (up to 162 HP on the Dyno, thank you very much!) and I seriously never used it. Ride by feel, get to know your bike and you'll be set.

You'll prolly get used to riding with this engine before any use of a tach would come in handy and on most newer models the ignition is controlled by a rev limiter which would rectify any "over-rev" situations. Like Navi suggested, if you desire one for tuning purposes - get one that's geared for such....you won't be seeing 13K ....so why the need?
On a side note...if I were to install any type of gauge I'd install an oil pressure gauge.

I have put about 1000 miles on my new bike now. Even if I had a tach I wouldn't use it. I can pretty much just feel the bike and whats going on. Thanks for the adivice I'm glad I didn't get one and clutter shit up on my bars.

On the 86 1100, the only time I watch the tach is in 1st,
I have a tendency to wind it up pretty high and if I did
not keep an eye on it I would probably exceed redline by
1000 to 1500.
