i'm trying to lower the back of my 86 vt700 and was wondering how do i release pressure out of the hydraulic strut that sits inside the shock. i'm using a dremel tool to cut the springs down but, how do i tell if its air or oil and how do i lower it. thanks for the help.
I had pete at SOTMC cut the springs for my '88, no adjustment to anything else- but they're oil, not air. In fact I never really used my cut stockers (I ended up going with progressives) - you can have them for $58 shipped if you want them - they'll bolt right up to an '86. It's probably not a bad idea to have a spare set since shocks don't last as long once they're cut.
I 'm pretty sure the '86 might have air driven rear shocks - shoot a pm to m@man, he's got an '86 and I know he lowered it, so he'll know. He said it was a pain to lower the rear, but I don't know if that's because of having to compress the shock to get the spring out, which has to be done for all shocks, or if it was some special problem having to do with the air.

No, progressives will cost you $200 at the cheepest.
Here's what I meant: Before I got the progressives, I had pete at SOTMC cut my stock shocks down for about $67. I used the cut shocks for about a day and then decided to bite the bullet and buy the 11" progressives because I wanted the ride to be a little lower. So what I'm saying is, if you want to buy my stock shocks that are already cut down, I'd sell them for $50 + $8 shipping.
