I asked at TSW but those guys are rough.
I'm addin a HD sidemount to my SS and have a few questions.
I'm a carpenter. Steel is much more stubborn then wood.
I'm good with my hands (yes that too) but don't know shit about bikes.
Heres my questions:
I did a search for installing the side mount and found a post by moore6085 at TSW

I see the spacer he's talkin about.
Do I have to drop the wheel to get that spacer out? If I do any tips so I don't mess it up?
To cut the spacer down, does it have to be cut very acurate? I want the wheel to still be in the middle of the bike =) He's talkin mm's so that makes me nervous.
Once I get it out whats the best way to cut it? I got a sawzall =)
Thanx for any help.

Moore is over here too. I'm sure Clint will chime in when he see's this post.
I know a lot have tapped the axle bolt on the chain side and just used a bolt to bolt in on the axle. You may want to look at doing that if you aren't comfortable cutting your shims.
It's an easy mod if you have a tap set. There's been a bit of discussion over at TSW about it as well, mostly about the different sized tap that has been used. It seems there are different ID's on the axle bolt itself. Mine is mounted to my bottom shock mount bolt.

Man check my pic on the bike pics area, and check out my sidemount, I got a longer screw and put hte sidemount on the strut screw (I had it on the shock screw before it is the same thing) a hell of a lot easier than using the axle.

How do ya mount it to the shock?
Get a longer bolt I would think and improvise some sort of spacer?
Anyplace online I could get a longer CHROME bolt?
If I'm bein a pain in the ass just tell me

I used a longer bolt for mine on the shock, just got one from the stealer that was about 12mm longer to make up for the difference taken up by the sidemount. But it may work without that. I just liked a little more meat grabbing the threads.

Thanx for the replies guys and encouragement.
If I can get that longer bolt at the stealer that will be probably the way to go.
This is the sidemount I got

You should be fine going that route. I believe the one I got from them was an 8mm x 35mm chrome.

Nice sidemount.....fancy schmancy
Anyhow, Corpsgrinder, we need to hook up this summer. I only live about 45 minutes from Maywood. Use to work in Hackensack for J. Fletcher Creamer & Son

Ok. This is really not as hard as you may initially think and to me it look's better because the sidemount dont stick out as far. This maybe a little long so here goes. First the sidemount that you posted a picture of is the one I used. You will not need the washer. And yes you will have to remove the wheel. When you remove the wheel take the left spacer and measure it. It should be 1 1/4". Now take the sidemount and the bushing/spacer that came with it and put it in the sidemount and measure it. It should be 3/4". Now you need to cut 3/4" off the stock spacer which will give you a 1/2" spacer. Now when you put the 1/2" spacer and the sidemount with the bushing/spacer together it should measure back to the same as the stock spacer was initially, 1 1/4". Now what you'll need to do is take a metal cutting bit on a drill and go around and around the inside of the bushing/spacer to make it a little bigger inside diameter to slide on the axle. Once that is done you can start putting everything back together and wire it up.

Thanks for the pics guys.
I tapped the axle with a 9/16 bolt.
I'm now working on hiding the wiring.
I think I'm gonna clip it to the bottom of the swingarm? if thats what its called.
I like how it looks the way moore has it. Takin the wheel off would be a big step for me right now. Plus I don't have a bike jack.
I WAS gonna do it that way until I thought about what could go wrong and then decided against it.
I plan on doin the VTX mod. I think when I do that I'll move the sidemount on the inside of the swingarm?
Thanx again.
I'm having a problem with the side mount on my bike and have a quick question. I came back from a ride yesterday and found the license plate facing the ground. I checked the torque on the rear axle nut (good) but the thing almost swings freely. After looking at the pics in post 10 and checking mine I noticed the raised portion of the sleeve is on the outside (mine) vs. the inside (moore6085). Is it time to pull the axle and swap it around? My other idea was cutting some u shaped shims out of some thin stainless I have laying around and inserting as many as it needs between the raised portion of the sleeve (mine) and the swingarm. Any advice?
Thanks from a noob.

I`m having the same problem with mine.I didn`t relise when i ordered mine that it was for a 1" axle but got a reducer from Omega and used it.I`m going to drill a hole on the bottom side, tap it and install a set screw.I`m thinking that will hold it in place.
I thought about doing the same thing but after I inspected it the chrome bracket is tight to the sleeve but the sleeve spins around the axle. I'd check the directions for what way the collar on the sleeve is supposed to face but I bought the bike like this. Do you have the directions from yours handy? If you get a free minute could you check the instructions for me? Thanks.

Look at this link if thats the type of mount you have get this nut and flip axle work just fine very easy to do .

That is the mount I have, I ended up cutting 3 shims and sliding them between the raised collar of the sleeve and the swingarm. Torqued to factory spec it seems pretty snug. But, correct me if I'm wrong, isn't that collar supposed to press against the bearings? I am starting to think it would prevent grime from getting between the axle and the bearings (maybe?).
I will be replacing the rear sprocket and chain in a couple weeks and would like to make sure it is installed correctly.
Oh yeah, sorry to dig up an old post Corpsegrinder, I have gotten a lot of info from your postings, thanks. This one had the pic that I needed to explain the position of that sleeve.

Thanks,

The mount is going to be on the axle, what I need is a wiring diagram for the lights, blinkers, and brake.
