has anyone experience with a remote start for a bike?
i know the advantages, but how about disadvantages? i was looking at some on ebay, they run about $40, the Thor brand.
i was just wondering if it will drain battery quickly or on cold days ensure choke knob was left open prior to leaving bike overnight. don't know just asking. thanks

I have one with my alarm. Didn't even bother hooking it up. Seems like a waste of time and effort for a bike. I can see the point on a car, so the heater and defroster is working. But, in my opinion, it's a waste of money for a bike.

i was thinking, that if i ever foget to put it on N and start it, it probably fall down..how bout the alarm, good idea?

With the money invested in the bikes, yea I think it's a good idea.
I also have a disk lock and cables locks to join both bikes together if we're out together.

BTW the starter won't turn with the kickstand down, or the bike in gear without the clutch lever being pulled.

No worries about that . It should not start in gear with the kick stand down or the clutch not pulled in . Would you not also need to leave your gas on as well as the choke open ? I would not want to do that .

airportff and mr.sinister,

that's right the bike shuts off w/ kickstand down when i shift, done that couple of times. what kind of alarm you recommend? something simple?

Like he said. I can see an alarm, and lockin' up the bike, but I don't know, a remote starter for a bike seems to me a bit...lazy.

AirportFF, what kind of draw is there on the battery? I've been looking at some of them on Ebay and see 4 mA for a few. But as in all stats, just wondering how it is in a real world environment. I could see using an alarm/immobilizer as a good deterent. Just wouldn't want to come back to a dead batter. Obviously our bike batteries don't have the reserve amperage a car does.

My brother has a Kawasaki Ninja 600R and he installed a remote start. The bike was able to be started in gear. He showed all his friends and about a week later one of his buddies was showing someone the remote start. He pushed the button and the bike launched right into a parked Cadilac Escalade! You should of heard the words they were sharing! It was funny but not that funny.

Tis kinda funny....

one of those "hold-ma-beer-and watch-this-chit" stories...

Purely a novelty item on a motorcycle IMO.

Hay, i have a talon motorcycle alarm and it has auto start and pager remote as a features.( i don't have the auto start hooked up)
I can go about two weeks with the ararm on and still start my bike without any problems. I really like the pager though. The range of the pager would be nicer if it had a better range but it works great otherwise. I have the wire diagram of the alarm.

That's the same schematic that came with mine. Different brand name, but obviously the same manufacturer.

What make is yours Airportff. How far away does your pager work?

How is the alarm set off? Movement? I ride my bike to work a lot in the summer and park in a large parking garage. Added Security would be nice.

Mine says "kings gun" on the box. As far as the pager goes, I have no clue. I don't use the alarm much. I made a spot up under the seat to remove the fuse so it doesn't work. When I want to set it, I just reach down and slide the fuse into the holder.
I do it that way because I've heard too many stories about the alarms on bikes shutting down the engines on the road on people.

I have a mercury switch (optional) on mine that senses movement and of course the standard electrical lockout and siren

It has a mercury switch and a perimeter sensor (that can be ajusted to different distances) also can tell if someone is tampering with the battery. It doesn't have to plug into the bikes wireing other than power and ground if you want. The rest is for the auto start.(i don't use)

I had a big problem with people just sitting on my bike in the parking lot when i was in the mall, and now noone want to get close when i have the alarm on. I don't have any problems anymore.

NOTHING pisses me off more than people that think its 'fun' to sit on a bike that isn't theirs without the express permission of the owner.... How'd they like it if you sat in their cage to pass the time of day. Some one needs to make an alarm that would electrocute the bastards on contact.

I know what you mean. I even had a problem with kids climbing on it when i was in a friends house. Then when i came out and yelled at the kid the parents freaked on me. I told them that they were lucky that there was no damage, cause i would of really freaked.
I left and never took my bike back until i got the alarm, you should off seen the kids face when he came within 7 feet of it and the alarm went off. I laugh may ass off when he ran off. That was well worth getting it.
