For you new Spirit owners the first thing to do (after taking off the reflectors) is getting rid of the stock taillight. This is a slick way to do it. I have one on my Magna and Susan has it on her SS.

Bill, is also working on fork extensions for the Spirit, the prototypes look awesome. I think he plans on making 2, 3 & 4 inch.

If ya get one check the bulb in the light .The lights are from drag specialties and the bulbs they come with suck. The first one I had lasted two weeks and burned out .I just got another light from drag specialties for my side mount it had a short in the bulb and blew the fuse.It is a great mod just throw away the bulb and get one from the auto parts store.

I agree with that. Just be careful and don't put a bulb in that's too close to the lens. It may melt/distort the lens.

I got this mod and put it on, bike looks great, seems brighter than the "brick" was.

For those of you that may not be mechanicaly inclined, this is a mod you can do to your bike without knowing much more than how to turn a screwdriver.

About the toughest thing about this mod is splicing the wires together, which i ended up having someone else help me with, but once you do it once you should be able to do it again forever.

Good work on the mod Billski, love it lots.

Check your wiring before soldering. My wiring wasn't either of the two suggested on the Billski mod paperwork. The only thing that was right is green is ground. Make sure the running light is dim, hit the break and make sure you have the right wires hooked up. That may be the cause of some of your guys problems with the bulbs burning out so fast. Love the mod, looks great!

You can use the stock signals with it. Billski makes a great assembly. It really cleans up the back of the bike.

If you add some small silver bullets for signals, the back end looks awesome. I mounted my bullets on the fender struts, using a bolt adapter. The bullets screw right in and since you have the fender off to do the billski, you may as well do the signal lights. Make sure you put the wires through the hollow bolt before splicing, or you'll have to re do it to get the fender back on. It is a very clean instalation. Get a grinder and chop off those obnoxious looking signal brackets in the back. I'd post a picture of mine if I could ever figure out how to get my new fucking camera to work!!!!! Hopefully soon.

p.s., Welcome to the fun house!!!

I got a nice shot of my Billski mod with silver bullet tail lights in the garage photos. All wiring was done so it can't be seen. I had to chop off the original turn signal mounting brackets.

A tail light with just those two may be intended to be a running light with one red positive wire and the black ground. Just a thought.

What about tail lights that come with only 2 wires ? A red and a black one . How do you hook those up ?
My LED tail light only came with two wires, but was a run/stop configuration. The unit itself was the ground the other two wires were for the brake and run lights. Not sure if that's the same configuration you are looking at. But as long as it's a brake/run light it should be the same.

So what do I do with the 3rd wire ? Wrap it in tape ? Connect it to a bolt or the frame ? Electrical is a weak area for me .

RustyJake

Seeing it was a ground for mine, I just put an end on it and grounded it to the frame. I'm sure taping it and tucking it out of the way would be fine as well.

i removed the fender; i imagine you could do it w/o removal, but it seemed like it would be a pain in the ass. i had to use the second wiring method to make it work. read all the directions (two paragraphs, i think) before you start and you will know what i'm talking about. definitely a good mod, changes the look of the whole ass end.

RustyJake

I took my fender off when I added the Billski as well. It will make the installation a lot easier.
Just be careful not to scratch the fender when you are taking it off and putting it back on. An extra set of hands is always helpful, and it's easier to take the fender off by allowing it to 'drop' and sliding it out below the struts. You have a better chance of scratching or damaging it by pulling it out the top.

Just got mine installed last night. Kinda a pain, didn't have the right bolts for the bracket, so I jsut kyped a few of the screws from the lic. plate on the stock assembly.
Does anyone know, can I fit an aftermarket lic. plate frame on with this mod? It seems a littl e tight up underneath the light.

Wild Coyote

FYI, if you want the slammed look, or want to drop your rear a lot, don't go with the billski. You need a lot more clearance under the fender with it. A side mount is better if you want to drop it. I may be going that route and selling my Billski.

You can use the Billski mod if you are going with a hard tail approach for the bike. I know because of a guy I know had this done, it looked pretty sweet, but rough ride.

RustyJake
08-15-2005, 08:27 PM
Set your preload to maximum and 3/4" travel limiters on the shocks would help, but at 11" the travel limters are not going to help a lot. I had 11-1/2" (with 3/4" travel limiters) shocks with the billski and had no problems with the preload set to max. They were the 412 progressive shocks though.

Billski doesn't make the tail light but he makes a really nice bracket to hold it under the rear fender if that's what you are looking for. He packages it all together for you. I'd recommend it!

Hay Hungeram. I ordered the taillight from motorcyclemods.com. It is a kit that you just install. No i didn't use a load equalizer with the light, but i do have a signal minder that might do that.

One tip you might find helpful, run a strip of tape on the inside of each bracket before you loosen off your fender competely...This will stop any scratching of your fender during the process. Also that if you use something to hold the fender in place - regular screw - when taking off the bolts the fender wont slide around on ya. Just couple a tips I found helpful....Looks great and no more brick on the back of my ride....now those signal lights gotta go

Hello, noob to your site here, and I posted a "hello" on your general board, and I saw this topic- and it is exactly why I was searching for this site! I knew if I found a good shadow enthusiast board- this would be one of the #1 mods- Honda's frequently build a really nice bike with really great lines and a horrible mailbox of a tail light!

Okay- here is the deal, if I can't find a easy to mount tail light with integral turn signals, I am going to have to make one of my own. If I do, I will post pics.

I really don't want an undertail light for this guys bike- I am putting on hard bags, and he has a back rest, and wants a rack. So I am mounting up all this stuff- this is alaska, and the distances we drive are pretty far, so these guys discover they want to put some carrying capacity on them. These bikes are the ultimate commuter bang for the buck cruisers, and I am the only Jap bike fabricator in my state.

If you guys have an idea or a pic of an integral LED tail light and turn signal, I will just make one out of the stock bracket- but I really hate re-inventing the wheel if someone has a reasonably priced good product that folks here endorse?

Instead of laying the wires side by side and twisting them together do this...

Slip a shrink sleeve over one of the ends.

Skin back just a little insulation.

Then seperate (fray) the exposed ends of the wire just a bit.

Next put them together (end to end) and let the seperated ends intertwine.

Then give it just a small twist to get them tightly together. Apply just a little solder. Now slide the sleeve in place and heat it (to shrink it in place).

Makes for a very strong, professional looking job!

A hair dryer is good enough for some types of tubing. I'd try that first. If you use a heat gun, you can overdo it and end up meltingthe tube, or the insulation... or even (in a worst case scenario) weken your solder joint...:knife:

I've never soldered, I figure it can't be that tough.

Don't forget to get flux to ensure the solder adheres to the wire. Once you solder the connection use Isopropyl alcohol to clean the residue then heatshrink.

Rosin core flux for electronics.

Also after you solder the joint and before you slip the shrink tubing over try putting a little liquid electricians tape on there, after it dries move up the shrink tubing and hit it with the heat. Helps to waterproof the joint a little better.

The cat's eye tailight i have I got from www.motorcyclemods.com (http://www.motorcyclemods.com) It is the same frame as the Billski but is full of LEDs and comes with an assortment of lens covers. I liked that because all my other markerlights were LEDs with clear lenses.

I tried a 1157 retro-fit LED in the Billski... but it was not that bright... The new taillight is completely lit up and if you dont mount the plate under it there are 3 LEDs you can turn up to face the back and add a lil more light

there are also some Oval shaped tailights at that site that are not bad looking.

I will try and take a pic of the license plate as it is, but I already orderd the bilski and some of Nickos integrated signals to put in it. I dont know if I will be legal when I am done, but as you said, theres always a way... any other thoughts on this would be appreciated.

First of all, the Billski has an integral license plate backing plate. So all you need to do is bolt on a small mounting plate for the inspection sticker at the lower edge. As for being "legal"... if legal means visability of the light at a given distance... yes you will be legal... if you mean turn signals also visible at a given distance... the Nicko-lites will give you that too.

now for the good stuff....

Cool... You'll ahve to take the Billski apart to install the Nicko-lites so you might want to wait on the install until you have the whole thing together. THe Billski is great as it is... but the Nckos really complete it.

The Inspection Sticker bracket is actually a separate bracket that hangs fine off the new billski bracket, so this will work fine once I get it all installed. Thanks for everyones replies. Now only 4 more posts till the trike goes away.

I added the Billski with Nicko99 integrated Turn signals, and removed the old rear blinkers and brackets today! It looks great, escpecially with the rear turn signal brackets removed. I used some load equalizers ($25 per pair plus tax) that I picked up at the local cycle shop. Here as some pics of my results:

Technically, the struts will only rub on your tail light if you install them wrong. They aren't anywhere near the light.
But if you are referring to your fender/subframe, I'm sure there are some running 9.5" struts and that light combination with the stock tire and don't have any problems.

I'm just wondering what kind of stock struts came with your bike?? They come stock with shocks.

I don't have them on anymore because of the roads around here, but I have the bilski rear light mod and with that I ran 9.5" struts. Yes it was extremely close but no rubbing. Probably about a 1/4" between the plate mount and the tire. Also that is with stock 160/80 tire. Hope this helps.

Way over priced for a $18 light you can get from wholesalers and mount if you have any fabrication ability. Oh and the stock signals gotta come in board...

Yea me too, soon ill be turning some out to sell. Got 2000 Red LED smt (surface mount technology) on the way. Will be a lot brighter than a single 1157 bulb and im running a 1 3/8" 43 LED bulb now (i think thats what it is, been a while). There is 1 guy on eBay who sells the slim cat eye with LED's in it, but its still over $50 with shipping and one person on the I'net sells one for $119.00 + shipping. Forget that.....

I added the Billski with the nicko99 signal lights, and it is a very nice looking mod, then for another 7 bucks, I replaced the included billski bulb with a replacement LED brake/tail light bulb, and its made this mod complete. I would recommended checking into replace that bulb with the LED one, it plugged right in and worked great without any wiring changes for the break light/tail light.

I will post some new pics soon to show the updated look it gave the tail!

I tried replacing the stock bill ski bulb with an led but had nothing but troubles. At first it would work for about 30 secs, it would allow me to apply the brake a couple of times then that was it...just worked as a running light. I couldnt keep it working properly with a high/low function. Pain in the ass. Different bulb...maybe...load equalizer needed?? maybe.....got a regualr replacement and put it back in. Until I can find a sure fire fix, looks like Im stuck with the regular bulb....A full board of LEDs would be cool, seen them on some other bikes...
Any one have any ideas?

chewychewytoo
03-23-2007, 11:18 AM
Well I did have some troubles as well, I had the wiring reversed and the regular bulb seemed really dim, and everyone on the forums said the included bulb with the billski was cheap and to replace it so I did, then when I was at the local Honda/Suzuki dealership, they said why not use an LED bulb so I tried that, and it would not work except as a running light, which is when I found out it was the wiring that was reversed, so I switched the wires and voila, it worked like charm, so to answer the questions from the previous two posts...

I got the LED bulb off the shelf at my local honda dealership, it was generic brand, dont recall the name, but it is a cluster of LEDs in a bulb connector that plugs right into the same socket on the tail light, no load balancer needed because it does not flash.

Try reversing, I know it wont lock into place, but you can check for the reversed wires if you put it in the socket reversed and then test the brakes and see if that works, if so, you may have done what I did and crossed the wires upon installing the billski :)

Hope this helps!

you've got a couple options, you can take the light apart and replace all the leds w/ brigher ones, but you'd have to find dual brightness leds and have an extensive knowledge of wiring and circuit boards.
or you can just use some of the led pods that rifle and i used and just have some of them wired to run and some wired for brake.
or you can do the cheap and easy route (what i did) and just add aux lighting around your fender and plate mount.

I bought a 7 dollar bulb from the honda/suzuki dealer that plugged into the billski and its plenty brite enough for brake/run light, not sure about the plate, I have not really looked at it in the dark when I was paying attention to see how the billski light lights up the plate. I am thinking about moving the plate to a side mount anyway but I hesitate to do that as I dont want wiring running down the side of the bike if I can help it.

Hey guys, i just had to do surgery on my billski tail light. Bulb burned out and after some discussion with Razor and Google... i found that it can take a 1157 auto bulb without melting the plastic.

Other problem i had, was the ground wire broke off the housing for the socket. Besides not being able to purchase a mini 1157 locally (auto supplier looked at me like 'wtf is this, ive never seen one of these bulbs) i also could not find a replacement socket that matched the one in the tail light.

So i ended up with an adjustable automotive socket (silver, has squeezable lobes that you can depress so it fits diff size holes..and has what looks like a large fender washer attached at the bulb end) Kinda looks like this, but not exactly:
http://www.minimania.com/imagesxsm/27H5545.JPG

. So what i did, was cut the squeezy lobes off and round it off at the base of the socket then cut the 'washer' part of it to fit inside the light assembly. I fit the 'washer' part between the plastic housing and the metal socket (with the threaded ends to attach to the housing). Held that socket in excellent. No movement whatsoever.

Since all aftermarket sockets are 2 wire, and ours are 3 .... i ran the yellow ground wire right to the back mount on the tail light housing (using a U shaped connector). now the ground is permanent. I left enough wire so that if it ever breaks off again, i can just re-strip it and put a new U connector on it.

After doing this, the bulb is WAY more secure.

Drawback, the 1157 is only 4w on 'dim' (as opposed to the 'stock' one at 8w). But when on 'bright' its a whopping 27w. Way brighter than before.

I did find direct replacment parts online if anyone wants the info:

Just came across this thread as I was about to post an FYI....

I was having the same issues with the "dim" factor on the billski bulbs, also went through 2 in less than a year...and a pain trying to find those sizes. Played a little and found that a :

1157 KR bulb is fantastic - Krypton Automotive bulb - Nice and bright, brake is really bright....rated for 2,400hrs on stop and 10,000hrs on tail. Its a 2x rated life. Think I paid about $4 far a 2 pack of these suckers. They are a 12V bulb. 1157KR/BP2

Tied this in with the kuryakn runt-turn-brake controller and it gives plenty of visual now....

Give it a shot if your looking for a better bulb...(I found most the 1157 replace LEDS were actually dimmer than the little billski bulbs)

See yuh

The LED Pod I added from my Honda Dealer, replaced the Billski bulb for me just fine, its plenty bright enough run and brake. I dont have anything to compare it too but the standard bulb that came with it, but its working just fine.

I did modify my bracket to remove the license plate though, and moved that to a side mount. I will get some pics of it on my gallery soon.

I tried taking pics tonight, but they just wouldn't come out right. (500.00 fucking camera and i cant figure out how to take good night / light shots lol).

Lets put it this way, it puts off a red glow on the asphalt behind me. When i hit the brake, it lights up like a christmas tree. My buddy tonight asked wtf i did to my light that its so goddam bright. He said its now as bright as my 20w halogen turns heh.

I really recommend to everyone that has billski, to swap the bulbs for automotive 1157's. Won't regret it.

One thing to keep in mind, especially those in the warmer climates during the summer, the standard 1157 is a bigger bulb and may touch the plastic rear lense. This has caused some to melt or distort the lense over time.

Dupo
06-10-2007, 08:56 PM
It doesnt touch. Theres room for it. I thought not, but definetly is. The use of a 1157 auto bulb comes straight from Billski himself. He said it works fine, no melting. Also read a few guys that run these confirm as well.

Hi Dupo, so is this the bulb that came with the billski I bought? It was not that bright, I am not at home to look at it, so I was just wondering. If its a new bulb that he is offering as a replacement, cool, I will look into getting that to check it out.

What he puts in there is a mini 1157 bulb that no auto store carries (not even auto suppliers). I found one (see above post) online, but i didnt wanna have to order it.

Billski says that you can just use the bigger (normal) automotive 1157 bulbs in his brake lights without melting the plastic. You can get them at any auto parts store. The one i got from auto zone is bright as hell.

i guess this is the season for tailights to burn out, i got the scoot mods cateye side mount pretty much same as the billski, but on the side of the bike, anyway, it went out last weekend (stop filiment) and i rode around for about 2 hours to every part store and motorcycle shop, and finally found them at a local iron horse dealership here in town, so i bought a few at a dollar a pc., and they are the smaller ones

I bought a pair of the 1157LL (long life) bulbs, they did say Krypton on the package, and were a lot larger than the original ones that came with the billski. Could not tell much difference in the brightness compared to the led bulb I had in there, but will have to compare it at night to be sure.

I dont know if he still makes them but nicko99 made some to integrate into the billski mod, I used them on mine, I did have to grind off the stock brackets, and I am going with a side mount license plate bracket with tail light on it, and no signals at all on the rear for now. Basically if you want you can just remove the stock signals and add some bullet signals in their place or remove the stock brackets and do some bullets on the fender bolts.

Like these bolts:
http://www.meancycles.com/Home.asp?PartID=196296&AccCategoryID=2389&AccCategoryTypeID=0&BikeModelID=5484&ManufacturerID=0&BikeType=Cruiser&CompanyID=0

with these lights:
http://www.meancycles.com/Home.asp?PartID=182454&AccCategoryID=2333&AccCategoryTypeID=0&BikeModelID=5484&ManufacturerID=0&BikeType=Cruiser&CompanyID=0

There are other options but this is mostly up to you how you want it to look and how much you want to do yourself, you could make your own LED flasher boards like nick099 and install them into the billski light if you want to go that route.

quam
07-26-2007, 06:11 PM
yo newbie, there's a shit-ton of options on the turn sigs. the only integrated tail/turn i've seen is nicko's, but shit man, you can do the strut mount like a lot of us (including me) have done (also, i don't think those kury bolts fit the spirit, gotta go w/ the ones from scootworks), you can get some of these: http://customdynamics.com/custom_led_turn_signals.htm, and wrap em around your shocks/swingarm/inside the fender.......
you can drill up into your struts and mount any kind of bullet sig up into them to mount em tight to the fender.....
or put these pretty much wherever you want: http://customdynamics.com/step_lights.htm

I'll probably put it on the side when I get a different fender. I have a side mount, but the only place i could find to stick it was hanging off the chrome frame piece on the fender. The shock has a weird bolt on that side. I may be able to put it on the shaft axle--but there isnt much thread sticking out. The other problem i have with that is the wiring... i hate exposed wiring--and i have to illuminate the plate in florida ( i think)

Yeah I just zipp tied my wires to the back of my struts, but there hardtail and you have springs....................you could run them down your swingarm and it wouldnt look bad if the wires were black wires(taped/painted) and zip tied,it wouldnt be that noticeable. I mounted mine to the bottom strut bolt and I know some do the axle bolt.......its up to you.

There are a couple of ways of dealing with the extra plastic on the rear of a VT750C2 that I know of. One is to just move the license plate up by cutting off the bottom of the black plastic extention. Another is to use the Bilski type plate offered by Cruiser Customizing. Check this link: http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/detail.cfm?Category_ID=110&manufacturer_ID=299&product_ID=26796&sblid_name=Motorcycle_Mods_Wide_Cateye_Taillight_License_Plate_Replacement_Bracket_______Spirit_C__for_Honda_Shadow_Spirit_750_C2&model_id=116

Here is a picture of a cut down rear fender of another members bike. This is similiar to what I did except I used an LED lighted license plate frame.

Thanks Farther, ya I was looking at that cruiser customizing site since it says it fits all years. That may be what I end up doing to avoid sawing things off. I'd rather get rid of the plastic all together anyways.

I was also looking at something similar I could order at the local dealership but the prices are so much higher. My other fear is the taillight not being bright enough in some of these and I'll end up having to wire in some LED's as well...not a difficult feat for the experienced, but an interesting challenge for this chick! First things first.

If you look at the pic its a dc not a c2 and it even says dc in the pic. B2B I would call and ask them ?'s before I bought anything cause that is what the Billski mod is. If it fits talk to 212 he will hook you up.

*nods* pic is a DC, but the caption notes this and specifies that the part fits a C2 only....either way I am waiting to hear back on what Billski thinks, but this is definitely the style I am going to go for. Good call though!

Well FYI to anyone who has a C2...I talked to Billski and he said the mod won't work for the shaft drive models because the whole support frame is different. He didn't think taking off some of the back fender would help at all....

So maybe Farther's idea of moving up the plate and taking off some of the plastic (this would include moving the wiring in the tumor looking piece) looks like the only option if I don't go with the side license plate mount - at least when it comes to ready made after markets!

For now, I'm going to keep looking, maybe get the dimensions of the cat eye light to see what can be rigged up.

I plan to mod my rear wheel in the same way a guy mentioned in another forum (200 tire on an 18" wheel) Will the tag mounted on this kit hit? I've searched but can't find it. Just to let you guys know in advance, I suck with computers. So i've most likely done something wrong. I'm not ready to tear the bike down yet. I don't want to loose any riding time this summer. I plan to do it all in the winter months. So i'll be asking a lot of dumb fuck noob questions in the mean time. I was wondering that if the tag will hit, does Billski sell just the light? I could mount the tag off the swingarm.

Too bad even the bilski site only makes 01-06. Hence why I asked about 08 models. Are there any other mods except for the most common bilski mod. That replaces the stock lunch box.

I would prefer to keep the license plate and tail light there and possible relocate the turn signals.

Even google doesn't have it. Maybe because no one can answer it on a forum.

Yep yep u can't read either. That replaces the tail light. Not the whole lunch box. Turn signals and everything are still there. Unlike the older spirit models the lunchbox on the back of my 08 is a lot larger than the former models. Making it difficult to find either a bilski mod or a different mod.

Ive seen the billski mod but like the looks of this one alot better, and the Bilski says its only good through 06 but I emailed and was told it would work through 07.

Okay, I'm probably alone here, but I just decided yesterday that I will KEEP the lunchbox. I added a luggage rack for longer trips, and it sticks out pretty far. With the addition of any kind of bag on there, the lunchbox doesn't look too out of whack. Probably gonna keep the huge turn signals too. Just got some used saddlebags on ebay, and once those are on the big sigs should be okay.

Or maybe I'm just trying to convince myself of this because I don't have the money to get the sweet Bilski tail and Kury lights I want...

Whatever, it's my freakin bike. Shut up...

Arlen Ness Mini Ovals are nice and you can get them for around $50. I picked up the ones I have at JC Whitney for around $30 and they have a good selection. Will probably eventually upgrade to the smaller Ness mirrors.

Awesome, I'm about to do the same thing. Stuff is en route. Was there an obvious place to cut the turn signals off? Same question for mounting the new signals through the fender. I'm the uber noob, so any advice, no matter how small, is appreciated. I'll toss my B/A pics up once it's done

Yes, once the signals are removed, you wil see the mounting brackets much better and how they are attached. You will have to remove your rear fender in order to remove and install the new tail light. That's when I would recommend cutting off your signal brackets. It will be obvious where to cut, have some paint to cover the area when your done so you don't rust out. Mounting through the fender is up to you. You will have to drill pilot holes for that, so place them wherever you see fit. Recommend putting the fender back on to find the best place for mounting them! Look at my pic, you can plainly see the mounting brackets. I was thinking of removing mine and mounting them to the rear fender as well to clean it up a bit. 18977
