We seem to have a lot of spammers showing up lately. I lock the threads as soon as I see them, but there are some that get by for a day or so. Do me and the other mods & admins a favor. When you come across one, report the thread. A copy of the report will go to all mods and admins.
If the thread is locked that means that we have found it and are waiting for Menace to ban the person and block their ISP. After he does that it will be deleted.

That's not what he's referring to. It's been commercial "bots" coming in and posting links to porn sites and crap that'll get you trojans and other viruses. We just don't want someone from here clicking a link to something like that and thinking we promote that crap.

You'll know it when you see it. It'll have a shitload of underlined "keywords" that seem to make no sense. But it is actually a link to some other bullshit site.

Just to touch on the subject a little deeper. I found a couple that were deleted by Fegs and Sinister. I undeleted them, locked the thread and sent the link to Menace so he can block their ISP and hard delete the thread as well as block the user. I'm not sure if he can see them if we delete them or not. So I figure it was easier for him if it's just locked and sent to him. If there's an easier way, I'm all ears

we have had a huge increase in them on another forum I am a mod on. I noticed many of them have email addy's that end in *@mail.ru and *@bk.ru

check it out and mass ban them! Since we did, we hardly get any now.

Sadly enough it is an easy script that is freely downloadable. These are also from Russia and over former bloc countries, since they do not have laws preventing it, nor the force to enforce them even if they did. What the "bot" does is looks for forums, fills in the blanks for the registration, the "owner" finalizes the registration and activates the account, then they activate the "bots" they go to work. Typically they get money for each time you click on a link, so they install programs to keep clicking on these links, so they get more money. Sad but true. I have not done this, but have looked it up since I had 2 forums, that I frequented, go down.

I was just wanting to make sure you were talking about the same thing.

We'll have to get menace to use the * wildcard on the last two IP numbers placements on the IP he's logging in on. I don't have access to that side of the admin panel.

Sorry, all I can do is delete the posts made by that member or any other spammer(which has been a few times lately including this dufus's spam). Menace is the only one with any powers that can ban or delete that account. Not sure if Herozup is even around anymore, he used to have the powers to make the changes. He has 'supermod' status on this board which should allow him to ban IP's and delete accounts if Menace has the access level set for it.

Like dirtwarrior said, you run the risk of getting spyware installed or even worse a virus. Depends mainly on your browser and your security settings (internet explorer uses activeX and it's been exploited by many sites to install all sorts of crap on your system......use firefox instead). I'd just hate to see anyone have anything happen because of these assholes and their links.
Plus clicking the links only helps support their cause.

I'd tend to think there's some sort of setting in the admin panel allowing them to post in the jokes section. Seems that they are all confined to that area.

Maybe one of you internet genius' can help me out. I ban an average of about 20 users PER DAY from here as spammers. Most before they even get a chance to post. It is getting really old, really fast.

Now here's my question. Are all these spammers being drawn here by the links that we are posting to other sites? Say for instance a joke site or porn site. The owner of that site checks his hit logs and see's all these people coming to his site from Shadowriders. So then he thinks it's a good idea to start spamming the site in hopes of increasing traffic to his sites some more. Or tells his buddies about all the traffic from here and they start spamming as well.

Just wondering if we are our own worst enemies when it comes to this shit.

Ya, it's just that I was reading through this post and everyone was posting the links and the Administrator was 'Fragging" them. All the links that I clicked on had been deleted by the Administrator. So, I was hoping that this was the right place to post about these fucking spammers and maybe get something done about it. I also sent the Administrator a shout out from the "Contact Us" link on the main page. I am hoping to hear something about how we can report this shit in the future. Just wish that the administrator could update vbulletin without having issues with all the add-ons installed. The vbulletin updates never go as smooth as they are supposed to.
One would hate to impose that all new posts from any new members until they reach 10 posts be approved before being active or live in a thread. That takes too much in the 'hands on' department for someone to look after.

I just blew away over 20 new members that would be probable spammers.
One other thing worth noting. The high incidence of spamming on this site also relates back to the "hot linking" on the porn pics. The porn sites are able to monitor traffic for the viewed images. This points directly back to shadowriders.net so anytime we host a linked picture, and someone views that thread we show traffic to that site. It's noted in their ip logs and they surely use that to their advantage in providing that info to anyone that could use it.

Not a problem with what you've done. With the holidays I'm not on here every day, so I might miss a few new sign ups. Plus with being away for a couple of weeks, there's a few in the queue that I'll have to find as the raise their head and start the bots posting. If you quote a spammer, just remove the live links. That way we don't have those floating around. If you see that the spam post is still there, just make sure there's a "banned" under their name. If not, shoot any of us mods a PM and we'll make sure they are banned. By all means, please keep using the "report a post" because the mods get an email about the post and can get to them that way. It'll take a team effort to keep on top of them on this site and all the help is appreciated.

I see by my email box a few spammers found their way on here. Glad I have a special account for the forum emails, LOL. I just deleted about 30 posts and banned quite a few spammers tonight.
It's a full time job to just look after the spam in here. Fegs, Mr.Sinister, and the rest of you thanks for taking up the slack. I definitely appreciate the help. I will try and get back into the routine of getting on here in the morning and again at night to monitor the new members. Some will already be signed up and missed, too many pages of new members to go through. They'll make a post and we'll get them at that time.
