I was trying to put on my new Ness grips last night and ran into some problems with the housing, which I need to grind out a bit. I am also having trouble with the dual throttle cables and attaching them to the grip. I can get one in the slot but the other is short about 1/2" and will not budge. Is there any way to loosen them a bit in order to get them both in place? ANY help is mucho appreciated!!! thanks fellas.

have you tried rerouting the throttle cable? instead of around the trees, re route under the tank..
is the push or pull?
are u using the sleeve then you put the grip in their?
or the grip is 1 inch and u are using the grip with the 2 slots for the push and pull cable?

the grip has 2 slots, no sleeve, one for the push and one for the pull, I can get either one of them in their slot but the other will not fit.
I don't think rerouting the cable will make a difference, it is the duals cables within the cable (if that makes sense) that is short. Even if I yank on them a bit they don;t give.

Have you tried taking the throtle off the carb ? If you yank on the cables to hard you can break off the tabs . It should give you some slack to work with .

I believe that after removing the carb cover on the left hand side of the bike it will be self explanitory . If not , I found out about this at Blacktops garage . The links section on the beanbox mod or the TSW link for the Hypercharger mod covers it in detail with pictures ! It should give you slack and keep you from breaking anything .Hope this helps .

Hey whats up Cal. What you will need to do is get to where the cable adjustments are down by the carb. and lossen them all the way with a 10mm wrench. Then you should be able the get both cable's on the throttle grip. Yes you will more than likely have to open the throttle housing up some so that it will clamp back down around the grip. You may also have to do one of two things. The little tit, tab or what ever you want to call it on the bottom half of the housing will more than likely not go back in to the alignment hole in the bottom side of the handle bar due to the aft. mkt. grips being either a little to short or long. No big deal though. You can either leave it and redrill another hole which is kinda of a pain in the ass but possiable or just grind it off. The housing will tight'n back down on the handle bar with out twisting with out the tit or tab. Then you can go back and readjust the cable's down by the carbs. NOTE, Just with my exsperience with readjusting the cables so that the throttle dont stick, but snap back like it should. TURN THE WHEEL ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT AND THEN READJUST CHECKING IT AS YOU GO. IF THE WHEEL IS STRAIGHT WHEN YOU ADJUST WHEN THE WHEEL IS TURNED TO THE RIGHT THE THROTTLE WILL STICK. Let me know is you cant figure it out or still have problems with it.

Moore, thanks for the info, man.
I DID grind off that little nub or tit or whatever the hell it is and also had to grind out the housing a bit so the housing will close around the bar and the grip while letting the grip turn freely. Still havent gotten the one throttle cable into it's slot. I looked around down by the carbs and can see the cables but didn;t know if I should mess with them. Can I simply loosen the return cable, which is the one that I can;t get to fit, and then readjust only that one or should I just do both? I fired her up tonight with just the one cable hooked up just to hear the roar! Haven't had it running in about a month due to it being apart and shit! i CANT wait to ride the fucker again. She fired right up!

Just to add info....I'm surprised you got anywhere by removing the original grips without first removing the tension at the carbs....oh yeah....it can be done....but it'll be a pain in the azz. BOTH cables are usually removed at the carb/s when installing new grips.
but
if the company that designed them requires that you grind and modify a pair designed for your machine.....I would suggest you stop here and contact them for custom installs......
....I mean....hell...I could grind, weld and fit a pair that was designed to fit a lawnmower if it came down to it.

Machine,
They are Ness grips made for 1" bars and most people that have replaced their grips with NEss or HD aftermarket grips have had to grind down a portion of the housing so the throttle side grip can move freely. No big deal. When I removed the old grips the throttle cables popped right off. Getting them back on is where my problem is. I will do what Moore suggested and loosen them at the carb, put them into the slots at the grip and then tighten them back up at the carb. thanks for the added info.

I agree with Clint on this. You'll never get them back on if you don't release the tension at the carbs.

Gotcha CC :thumb:
(btw...this would've been a good time to lube the cables)

Josh,
Some info for the cables. If you can't loosen the throttle adjuster near the carbs any longer, you only have 2 choices. First, shorten your cable sleeve (which should be easy if you are using stock cable). Cut the sleeve at the carb end according to your needs. Be carefull not to damage the inner wire. (I'm assuming your cable is similar with mine in the picture below).
Or, you can buy a longer aftermarket inner wire. If you don't have access to solder the cable end, you can use a barrel fitting with a set screw for the throttle end.
I've been using only pull cable for about two months, it seems working fine. Only a little bit stiffer to twist but releasing is faster.
Hope it helps, bro.

What are you using to cover the hole where the push cable used to attach. I searched and found somethin on it before, but I can't find it again. I rode to NAPA and the dude tried a couple different bolts, but nothing would thread in there. Is it a special "Honda" threaded hole or what. Thanks

The little chrome caps that covered your allen heads on the risers or pinch bolts on the trees. I put a dot of silicone on it and pushed it on there. Looks factory! :)
