Am I better off getting a trickle charger? I read that Noize jumped his from a car battery. Is that OK considering size difference? Figured I'd check with you guys B4 spending the money.

A jump from a larger battery is fine, becuse it's only hooked up for a short period of time. You do have to be careful that you don't overload your main, becuse a larger battery does have a few more amps than a typical motorcycle battery.

Trickle Charger? Those are great, but you do have to check you levels, cuz if it goes dry and you opperate it even once, you can ruin the cells.

They cost a little more, but worth every penny...Gel Cell battery, I've got one in my Shadow, they last twice as long, no levels to check, and I don't even bother with a charger.

Trickle chargers are great. I've had one on Susan's for the past few weeks. Put the bike together this morning, fueled it up and it started right up.

With the price of the battery for the spirits, a trickle charger is something you should have. Most of them come with permanent hook-ups for the battery terminals. Which makes it great for the off-season. One thing with the trickle chargers, make sure you buy one that has a 'float' or regulates the power once charged. There are some cheap ones out there that are just 1 amp or 2 amp chargers and continually charge.

BTW, if you have two bikes and only buy one charger.........you can always go back to the store and say you didn't get the battery terminal connector. The store may give you a new connector.

Thanks alot guys. I went out earlier to check out the situation since its starting to warm up. Battery isn't dead, but doesn't have enough juice to start her up.

And I'll make my point again.
Shadow, I love ya bro. But...

When I left my ignition on all night,... I thought I was screwed,... But I thought,.. Why not push start it,... I did it and went for a ride for about and hour and got most of my power back,...

I don't think it hurts to push start em',... Just don't make a habit of it,...

Is my battery dead?

While working on my bike last night, the battery got REALLY low. I used a trickle charger and charged it over night. In the morning the lights would all come on but the bike wouldn't start, I would just see the little green neutral light dim. So I hooked it up to the charger again until it said the battery was finished. I got it to start for a second, turned it off (my big mistake), opened the garage door and tried it again...nothing happening.

Charged it again for 30 minutes. Now when I press the ignition button the headlight dims down and turns off until I let go of the ignition button.

My trickle charger is a 1.5 amp, would using my 6 amp charger help?
Should I try jumping it with a car?
Maybe regift it and buy another?

Sounds about like what I did. Bike wouldn't start, but the lights were on, though the tail light looked dim. Charged it overnight and it started with ease. Rode the next day and the day after. Then waited three days and rode to work. Came out to go home, the bike started and idled for about 3 or 4 minutes. I hopped on and went to leave, as soon as I gave it gas it died. Tried to start again and the battery was dead. Jumped it from a truck, and it would start for a minute and then die. Repeated a couple times, then had the battery tested a two places and both said you have a bad cell. I beleived them since they didn't event have a battery to sell me. Searched all over town and the only place with a battery was the dealer for $134. Interstate had one they could get to me for $166. By the way, that battery is in there tighter than shit. I used two pliers on the terminals and bulled like a sum bitch to get it out, but I promise there is nothing holding it from the bottom.

You can also buy batteries from Westco (online). They're shipped to you fully charged - we purchased one for Bones' Valkyrie and had it in about 2 days. It's held it's charge really well.

http://westcobattery.com/motorcycle.php

They're rated pretty high, hold a charge better and they don't heat up...only problem with the dry cells, if they're not charged right the first time, they'll never charge correctly and will be weak.

Features:
Maintenance-free
Sealed design
No liquid
Zero corrosion
Absorbed glass mat technology
Resists vibration damage
Very low self-discharge rate
Higher cold cranking amps than stock wet batteries
Extra heavy duty terminal design

Pulled one up for my Aero - $81.95 with free shipping.

I have an 05 Shadow Spirit and it has a factory sealed non serviceable battery. Did they used to have wet cells. I did have a couple guys at battery shops, during my search, tell me that if I could find a gel filled battery that would be optimal; but it was hard enough just to find a battery for the spirit.

I just got off the phone with the dealer. They quoted me $131 + tax for the new battery. I checked the site above and they didn't show batteries for the Spirit 750, just the ACE. The dealer also said the battery in the ACE and SS750 are different. Can anyone confirm this?

Check out this site for batteries. Does this battery seem fine for our bike? I only ask because it's a lot cheaper than others I've seen.

I just had one of my delivery drivers stop by Cycle Gear. They don't list it on there site, but they have a lifetime warranty battery available for SS750's. Ended up costing me $82 total. They have to charge it for you there in order for the warranty to be valid. I gotta go pick it up in a few hours.

Might wanna check it out if you need a battery. Lifetime warranty ... can't go wrong. I made sure to ask the guy like 20 times .. if it EVER goes dead, I get another one? He said yup!

If I remember correctly, you have to have the car already turned on when you attach the jumper cables. Otherwise you can fry out the bike's electrical system. Has anyone else ever heard of this?

Just so everyone knows: the battery is a tight fit in the battery box. There is a hole in the bottom of the battery box. use it to push up on the battery. I wouldn't recomend using pliers on the terminals, unless you KNOW FOR SURE the battery is junk... just my .02:thumbsup:

I haven't heard of that, but I can see how that would happen. The CCA on a car battery is much higher than the bikes. I've alway's had the jump car/truck running because I don't want that battery to bo dead also if it wouldn't start.

orionrogue

The amount of available CCA that your average car battery has is way higher than what any motorcycle battery could have. Unless you know your car battery is on its way out, you could probably jump starts dozens of bikes with a car battery and still fire your car up after. So I wouldn't worry about having your car running while jumping it.

I've actually jumped mine using 12V emergency floodlight batteries that my brother had lying around. Easy to carry around, easy to jump off of.

Okay guys, I'm in need of some serius help. My bike hasn't been starting for the last month. I thought it was the battery, but even with a brand new battery, the GOD DAMN BIKE WON'T START!!!

When I push the ignition, the headlight turns off. All the speedo lights and the taillight stay on. WTF should I do now?

Sounds like the starter is drawing to many amps, could be fried.

nova69400
03-25-2007, 08:29 PM
Yeah, I would take the starter off the bike, and run a power and a ground right to the terminals on the starter. it should spin free. if it doesn't spin and spin FAST... you've got a bad starter

logan176

I was thinking about the starter myself, but I have no mechanical background. I'm just pretty good with cosmetics. I haven't looked at the manual yet, is it difficult to get to the starter? My brain has been fried over the last few days, my fiance and I are in the process of buying a house! Wish me luck guys...on the house and the bike. Thanks.

Logan, you should definately pick up a shop book if you're gonna be pulling anything off your ride. I just got my Haynes Workshop Manual in the mail on Saturday, and if you weren't born with oil running through your veins (I certainly don't), its going to be an invaluable resource for you.

It'll go into how to properly test the starter for continuity, and also rule out other things that are related to that circuit that could keep it from firing. Hopefully its something simple. And good luck with your house purchase.

I checked out the repair manual, took off the tank... and decided not to screw with the wiring anymore. So I caved in and brought it to the shop. I'm lucky enough to have a local chopper shop by me now. They just moved in about a year ago. I definately didn't want to bring it to the stealer.

The guys there nicely told me that the problem was that my dumb ass didn't solder the wires together when running the wires through the bars. I thought that shrink tube would've been good enough. They charged me $350 for 5 hours worth of work. It was an expensive lesson, but I was too pissed off and fried to start messing with the wires again. But as soon as it stops raining I'll be back on two wheels again!
