Has anyone added forward control extensions or new controls and had a problem shifting? I added 5" extensions and can't shift past neutral. I have a feeling that I just need to adjust the length of the new shift rod, but wanted to make sure nobody's found this to be deep shit...

After a long winter full of mods, I just went out for my first ride for the year! Runs like a damn champ! If anyone finds my balls, please let me know - I think they froze off somewhere down the street (the high here was 39 today).

hey man,
I had the same problem after I installed my forwards. It would not shift while it was parked but will shift fine when its rolling. I dont know what caused it, maybe the rod being so long, it just wasnt rigid enough to not flex a little. Now that I have 1000 miles on it, it works just fine.

Sounds like u just need to adjust the shift rod. Had to do that with mine when I first put on the Jayroc extensions.

Somewhat related question -
Lately I've noticed I can't shift into neutral if the engine is running...say when I come to a stop light. Seems to skip right over no matter how many times or how slowly I try it. If I kill the engine, I can slip it right into neutral, no problem. Anybody have any ideas on what's going on there? Used to do just fine.

When I added forwards my shift problems went away. Sorry, I guess I can't help you.

Try adjusting the clutch lever. Put a touch more slack in the cable.

AirportFF is exactly right here, your clutch disc is dragging making it nearly impossible to find nuetral. You just need to adjust the freeplay on your lever, needs more, about 3/4".
On another note, I've run into the same situation on a 250 Rebel. After trying to adjust the freeplay to make finding neutral easier, I checked in the shop manual(Honda's) and found that too thick of an oil viscosity would cause the clutch to drag. I haven't changed the oil yet, but intend to go back to a 10W-30 as recommended. I used the 20W-50 Vtwin Mobil 1 motorcycle oil, same as what's in my 1100. Sure wouldn't have thought that that oil would cause problems!

Thanks! Yep, that did it. Didn't even think about that after changing out the cables with the braided ones.

Brian,

Same thing happen to my clutch. I hv tried to adjust the freeplay but didn't work. Then I remember asking my mechanic to change the oil last month . Since then I started to have this problem. So I guess it must be the oil....
Thanks for the info.
