Ive seen plenty of the usual black, silver/gray, and green but what are some other good flat colors for paint jobs?

My green paint turned out a satin finish. Not flat, but not shiny. I kinda like it.

Just my humble opinion, and I mean no disrespect to anyone else's bike, but there are NO good colors for flat paint jobs!

Different strokes for different folks brother. Im not really into flashy paint jobs and flames unless they're old school flames

Flat red is great, I had a 33 ford done in flat red with pipes & whitewalls...Rat badass from hell...just not fast. Flat red, red beads, whitewalls & enough chrome to get attention...good for me.

I like satin metallics. Blues, golds, greens, etc

Sorry about the above post that was intended for someone that is no longer with us.

I like flat black. I am thinking of painting my tank flat black with that Camaro synergy green for scallops.

we'll see.

I did the flat black on my '07 VLX. I didn't "do it right" per se. But, for what I was going for that is relative.

I was going more for a "ratted out parts bike behind the shop" turn "bar hopper", but I put a fair amount of work into it.

I used a Duplicolor rattle-can, flat black followed by a Duplicolor Flat clearcoat. There is a "less is more" lesson learned from my work on this one. I did this in the garage with negative ventilation by way of a couple of box fans at the base of the garage door -- pointed out. And, I sprayed most of the surfaces down with just enough water to mitigate any dust particles flying. I actually had to hunt down some mosquitoes and gnats to embed into the first layer of clear just to hit that fine-line between "authenticity" and "mockery".

In all seriousness, a good sanding goes without saying. Then, a healthy primer coat and more sanding. Then a light dusting with the first color-coat then -- proper set / dry time. Repeat... Repeat... Then, I went 4 coats deep in clear with some light wet-sanding between. If this were a recipe, here is where it would read "season the mixture to personal taste".

In the end, I was pretty freakin' happy. And, I was shocked and amazed that the clear actually held up pretty nicely to fuel. But, the "spill" in question wasn't MAJOR, and it was several weeks after the last clear had been applied.

I'm sure there are folks on here who, unlike myself, actually have paint / body skills. They'll be a much better source of "real" information as to what it takes to do it well. This is just how I went from stock to flat black over the course of a weekend...

Man, that wagon is PRICELESS! It turned into yard-art and became a painful reminder to both my wife and my kids... My kids leaned why Daddy gets bent when they leave their toys out... My wife learned to look where she's backing her Expedition. Actually, I'm pretty sure she's hit a lot more shit than just that wagon... So, at least the kids learned a lesson...

Took a peak at your gallery (just wanting to know something about the guy eyeballin' my red wagon), and your tins look sharp as hell! Everything's been "touched" a little. Not over-the-top, but just "tight". VERY "detailed". Holding the line on the chopped rear fender, especially...

And, Spike -- your kind words warm my heart and make it go all "pitter pat"! I can now fuck-off. [Translated: THANKS, man!] :laugh4:

I painted my ss low gloss dupli color engine enamel black. i like it alot it didn't water spot like true flat does and the gas spillage just wiped right off!! The engine paint is oil an gas resistant, I never spilt to much cause i was careful as shit. but it turned out good.

Just my 2 cents

I'm debating on painting my tank and fenders a flat black color. I just finished painting all the removable plastic chrome pieces gunmetal metallic. It looks a little out of place with the red, but I think once I get the cylinder fins painted black and back on the bike it'll come together a little better.
Still might paint the red out tho. Might go for a Phantom type of Black/Grey thing.

Are you serious about those front forks? You could probably find some new ones on ebay cause you may as well throw those away!:dizzy:

Huh? I don't have those forks on the bike any more. I've got some from an '08.
I just finished painting the cylinder fins today and got my bike all together. Flat black motor, semi-gloss gunmetal painted chrome pieces... Still have a few things to strip off and paint.

the gunmetal looks cool, did you have to sandblast the chrome?

Acidbath666
07-03-2011, 12:47 PM
Nope. I just dirtied it up with some 600 grit and some thick steel wool. Then went a little higher in the sandpaper to smooth it a little. 3 layers of base coat primer, with wet sandings between coats, 3-4 layers of paint with wet sanding, and then 3-4 layers of clear with a little bit of 2000 grit.
If I could of sandblasted the cylinder fins I would of, but the bottom fins aren't removable. So I just used a dremel to sand the nasty crap off the polished edges, cleaned the living hell out of em with a boil in some cleaning agents and some wire brush action.

I'd like to sandblast the radiator cover chrome, but I'll prolly just use my orbital to give it a texture for the primer to hold to.

that engine looks so much better. How is holding up tho?

Acidbath666

It'll hold. It's 500° temp paint. And my prep work is pretty intricate. So it'll stick. I've done a lot of paint work on previous vehicles ranging from grills to rims to body panels. Prep it right, and it'll come out clean, and not flake or chip easily.
