guys, thanks for answering. I will try to keep this short. I want to develop my own web page, I want to get rid of "the middle man" currently used by our company to host and maintain one of our sites. The main purpose of this idea would be for training, data base keeping test posting. Where can I get started, one of our distributors are currently using this program and they can update, repair, etc internally on the spot instead of waiting and paying for someone else.

Here are some sites that give tutorials and the basic rundown of how to build & maintain your own webpage. It's got everything for beginners to advanced coders! If i was you, I would go though the html php & mysql sections. It will take some hours but when your done you will be able to do everthing that you mentioned..database.. posts..update.. and repair..

The question is have you done any programming in the past? PHP is a moderately mature programming envionment. If you've had experience building applications in BASIC in the past or any other language then picking up PHP should not be difficult for you at all. Regardless, the Dummies series has always been my favorite first step when jumping into a different technology, so you might want to invest in PHP for Dummies... trust me these books are excellent starting points for beginners or those well advanced in other technologies but need a launching pad for for something new.

Next, depending on how much backing you have from your company you might want to look into Studio 8 from Macromedia. It is likely the best complete suite for web development going. That might be argued by some, but the bottom line is that it has all the bases covered and excellent support not only from the company that produces it but the user community as well. Dreamweave which is the core tool is an extendalbe development envoronment that has direct support for PHP, JavaScript, ASP, and on and on. The development suite includes Fireworks, the Flash editor, Server extensions and all kinds of goodies that you'll likely never fully use, but as a package you're good to go. BTW, Macromedia has done a good job on their tutorials, but there is also a dummies book for each of the modules in Studio 8.

Down side is cost and that's why I mentioned your companies backing of you in this endevor. They are looking at $999 for a fresh copy or $499 for an upgrade from an earlier Macromedia Suite, so it is far from cheap.

I used to do all my work in Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Anymore my dev work is based in Visual Studios from Microsoft, but there is enough bang for the buck that I was able to justfy my emplorer purchasing Studio 8 to back me up on graphics composition, and script development for my sites.

The above comments are the best of all worlds... below should be included regardless of the availability of advanced development tools like those above...

There are lots of PHP tutorials on the web so you can spend a few dollars and rent some cheap hosting package that includes PHP and MySQL and you can leverage the online base of instructional matherial on PHP to get a good handle on the language without spending an arm and a leg.

There are also instructions on installing apache server on your workstation along with PHP locally so you can make your computer into a work station. Oh MySQL can be downloaded and installed as well for database. I personally perfer to work from a hosting platform for testing purposes.

))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Its a big endevor to learn PHP and SQL for a person that is comfortable doing straight HTML coding. BUT... it isn't like there is a dark viel to the techology. The open source community is very helpful for newbies getting their feet wet and regardless of where you go with it from this point, the principles learned in getting into these two technologies can be leveraged into many others.

Hope that gave some direction and perspective.

thanks for all the info, helpfull so say the least. I ahve looked into apache as it seems to me that you can work of your pc without having a server (as basically explained for php program). As I said, I want to see how dificult it is maybe by installing it on my pc and going from there. I would ask my co. to let me place php 7.1 on their server but dont thing they would agree.

thanks again. will come back with more q's if needed.
