Cobra II Replacement

I wanted to share some beer and some pain with the changing of the lightbulb in my Cobra II. I think its sticky worthy.

there is a chance you will will swear, kick, or throw items around the garage/yard during this work cycle. Bring beer. and maybe some of those grippy rubber gloves. and lubricant, white lithium grease.

in a sentence: to replace the bulb on a cobra II headlight you must remove two retaining rings that are SCREWED into the housing.

First, remove the little allen screw at the bottom of the lightbulb.

NOW you must remember, that since the headlight attracts bugs, and is at the FRONT of the bike, there is going to be lots of DIRT and bug guts inside the screw groove. lubricate the rings. Now you have to get those rubber gloves on and twist the ring counter-clockwise.

once you get the first ring off, the second ring gives you some little holes to stick a screwdriver in or something to get a grip to spin it out of there. You might want to get an old toothbrush and some cleaner and get that crap out of there as well.

you might notice some weathering/corrosion...

pull the headlight out, and there's one of those retaining clips on the back of the headlight that you need to free the bulb with. it kinda looks like this, and you MIGHT have to pull some wiring slack through the housing.

This is what I used to clean the grooves of the housing with. Beer and motorcycle cleaner. :)

Once its cleaned out, and to keep the bugs and gunk out for later, and to make removal easier LATER, I laid a thin layer of white lithium grease in the grooves.

oh yeah, and check to make sure the new bulb actually works before you screw it all back in and lock that allen screw in the bottom.

oh yeah, and then wash your damn bike... and get the rest of the crap and bugs and leakage from the lubricants off your gorgeous ride!

Stupid question maybe but, what did you do with all of the wires that were in the stock headlight when you installed the cobra?

that is a SHITLOAD of wires in that stock bulb...

and if you check my cobraII with the RENO mount pics/post you'll see it. basically I used some wire loom and stuck it in the space under the tank, left side.
