View Full Version : VLX 600 HyperCharger Kit

I'm putting this question here cuz I think the VLX section gets very little attention. (being there are very few vlx riders) Has anyone with a VLX 600 had/have a hypercharger on there bike? I have already rejetted for exhaust. Not sure what size needles, Stage 1 though. If I were to install this kit, any idea as to how much trouble I'm going to have getting this tuned out just right? I have read the reviews in cruisercustomizing.com. Most of the ones that have had trouble tuning are the pre '99 with the dual carb set-up. And, if anyone else has any information that will help persuade my decision, please post it. I don't want to buy this kit,(226.00) if it is going to be more trouble than chasing down a piece of ass:Boobs: in a convent. Forgive me Father! :shame:

It's your bike. If that's the way you want to go, have at it. I just think the money would be better spent on a possible upgrade to a larger bike down the road. A 600, by today's standards, is pretty small.
Now, don't take that the wrong way. I'm not slamming you, just stating my opinion.

Naw thats cool...What would this world be like if we couldnt state our opinions? Fucking communist bastards! Back to the thread...Honsetly, I would like a bigger bike. Not financially ready yet. But, I'm not a big guy 5' 10'' and only 150lbs. so my bike carries me well. I went down 3 teeth on my rear sprocket to reduce rpm at hi-way speed. (havent tried it out yet though) Plus, I like my bike and thats always a good thing!

THAT is the most important thing. With the smaller bike how does it fare on the highway when you're passed by a truck? That's why we decided to get Susan the 750, for the extra weight. BTW she's only 5'3" and the SS750 fits her fine

Umm if its a real windy day adn I meet it head on It usually throws me around, not too bad, but I try to scoot over as far as possible. I just like the looks and over all design of it and I'm pretty picky when it comes to that sorta thing. I like the 750's. I didn't know tjhey were out when I bought this one or I would have gotten one.

If you like the bike you have, and are comfortable with it, no reason not to invest in something like that. I don't think it'll make a huge performance gain. But most times you increase airflow, fuel and exhaust flow you gain performance. That being a 4 speed you may notice a bit more off the line.
As for tuning, it could be trial and error. I don't know if a stage 1 kit would be enough fuel.
I'm sure if you run into issues with it, there'll be someone out there that will be able to help.
Good luck with it.

So should I just go with intake like you have? Or is going to be the same no matter which set up I have? Thanks Rustyjake and everyone else for the input........

I don't think they make a bootleg or a thunder intake for the VLX (I could be wrong). If they don't, it may be more trouble then it's worth adapting one to fit. The one I run sux in the rain, literally, it sucks in water. For me it was a personal choice in what I liked in looks. Didn't really think of functionality.
Go with what you like and what you think would look good on your bike.

Yea they make all kinds.....http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/detail.cfm?Category_ID=86&manufacturer_ID=169&product_ID=5515&model_ID=1 I talked to pegs and he said he went the hypercharger because the open intake sucks in too much water. I thin if I order anything it will be the hypercharger.

I don't have the hypercharger, but with the butterflies on that wouldn't it suck in water too?

I don't know for sure, but they seem to run a lot better in the rain then open intakes. Talked to some people that run them and they say they've never had a problem. But I don't know what amount of rain it would take to effect them.

Are you going to this route for looks or performance?
Hypercharger looks nice but it's very costly and If I'm not wrong some riders said it doesn't add that much of power compare to other type of cheaper free flow intake. I may recall wrongly though.
Most commonly used are K&N replacement filter or open intake (frm Thunder , K&N, Shadow stuff, etc). These would supply as much air as the VLX will need.
Since you hv the jet kit, a cheaper route to get more power its to use a bulk foam UNI filter (about $10) with stock housing. Just cut the paper filter and glued the foam, it will flow just like K&N.

Just "runnin my big mouth" again...... Guess I may know a little something, huh Purp? The hypercharger doesn't suck as much rain because it also has an air inlet on the bottom side of the unit. It can suck air in from the bottom that doesn't have rain in it......DUH!

If more people could get a look of yours and see how sweet it looks, I'm sure you'd see more people opening to the possibilities of modding that style of bike. Personally, I like the look of the VLX. But I love the way yours looks!

Are you telling me to post more often? Heheh thanks Glenn, love your custom spider as well.
I agree that VLX is nice bike, it can turned out amazing with mild or wild modification. Here are my favourites so far. The first two are frm the other VLX forum. The second, with large tires are done by SL-custombike, Germany. I think all of them brings out the real beauty of VLX.

Those are some sweet rides. I wouldn't want to be riding the one with the red seat. Aside from keeping your ass from sliding off the back, I wouldn't imagine it's a very smooth ride.
You should start a thread in the VLX area here and post some pictures of what those bikes can look like. Thanks for posting those. I'll add a couple more to my VLX picture collection now.
On another note, your pipe's heat sheilds, are they ceramic coated or powder coated? If they are ceramic, do you have any problem with 'spotting' from water or anything on them?

The one with red seat should ride smooth since it still use the stock rear shock. SL Custombike modified the frame so that it looks like rigid frm the side.
I wonder where did they put the battery. Man this one look awesome even with a lot of stock parts.
Check out their website for more photos: www.sl-custombike.com
My pipe shield? it's just rattle can paint frm ACE hardware, Krylon Jet black (wrinkled finish). I hv some minor chipping but generally it's holding up very well. Great result with just $7.

Digging up an old thread here, but I like the way the hypercharger looks and I want to get one for my vlx. IT looks like thunder mfg. stopped making one for the vlx. Anyone know of any hyperchargers that will fit it?

Hi
For the VLX, www.scootworks.com offers a kit for the dual carb or single, I bought the first one, and based in my own experience, it runs like a shit with wheels, main jet toped 160...and then at full speed well, but then began to fail on lower rev, the mechanic said to install a dynojet or factory pro jetting kit, after a 8 hours or so working with jets, fuel-air mixture,etc... we refused to install it, I donīt know if the same problem is aplicable to single carb ones, but as regarding to dual carb, my best advice is: save your money for something else...
Cheers!

Hmmm. Sounds like its a pain on the pre 99 model. Since I only have a single carb on mine maybe it will work better.

Aside from putting a bigger motor in your bike, the only way you are going to top 85 is if you change the rear sprocket to one with less teeth. The 750 comes with a 41 tooth rear sprocket, most guys run a 39/38/37 tooth. The less teeth, the higher your top speed, but you will lose acceleration off the line.
