so i bought a stock(candy orange) tank from pyrpulhayez awhile back and i'm having my uncle airbrush what i'm pretty sure will be a kick ass pin up girl with some revolvers to cover the factory logos on the side. the airbrush was free so im pretty sure he didnt strip it down and throw a narly base coat on it but rather left it the stock blah color. im going to be buying some after market fenders from oldy's and im trying to figure out what might be a good way to avoid having to paint the whole bike that stock shit but also avoid what looks like a hoopty with a bad ass fuel tank. what do you guys think?

I'd suggest a satin, very low-gloss black...not necessarily flat. w/ the old-school pin-up art, it should blend pretty well. I'd like to see a pic of the tank to get an idea of what you have.

well yeah...that too

a friend of mine just painted his track car in John Deere blitz black. It's a single-stage, readily available, good option for a low-sheen paint. Many other ways it can be accomplished...but that's simple enough. There's also a product called Hot Rod Flatz, not sure how easily it can be obtained.

if you know anyone that can pinstripe, I'd consider getting some lines pulled in a copper (& maybe white too) on the black to match the tank. That's my $.02 anyway & I'm awesome.

There is never anything wrong with a nice set of tits. That is the orange you are hating? Looks more red, but I know how cell phone pics work.

To get it to match, I think the fenders need to be the red/orange.... or you could do white and black checkerboards maybe... May be too much, but it would tie in.

its whatever the factory candy orange color is .. i dunno about the checker board on the fenders it might as u said be too much not really a nascar kinda guy. yeh i cant wait to get it back and see it in person he's got to finish the checkered flags on the other side and behind her and put some enamel on it. ill prob figure out what kind of fenders im going to get and and then go from there if i get a little tin ill just paint it black but hell i dunno .. thats why i threw it on here to get some inputs. i lost my artistic talent about 3 yrs ago when a wave of unmotivation/kids came over me

If your little compressor doesn't deliver a nice smooth flow of air you'll play hell with it, most little hobby types pulse the air out and even with a regulator it is nearly impossible to get a smooth flow, the best deal for a budget is one of those little emergency air tanks from Auto Zone (I think they are about three gallons), you can fill it with your little compressor and it provides plenty of air at a nice smooth rate, a lot of folks use scuba tanks, but that aint cheap. You should avoid using a guage and learn to read the paint as it comes out of the tip, use very low air pressure for detail work and mix the paint to roughly the consistency of milk (I know, goofy, but it works).

OK, I didn't read all the responses but My suggestion would be to go with a small 1-2" factory candy orange/red (whatever matches the tank) strip or edging on both fenders with some airbrushed art or graphics to match the checkerboard or something like that for the middle/center of the fenders.

If ya got even just a little bit of the factory base coat then it "looks" like a complete custom job and should blend as long as the other stuff you put onit fits with your tank theme.

so ive noticed with spray painted parts that the clear apoxy i put on it afterwards didnt really do a good job where my seat touches my fender and where a few cables touch my tank it pulls the paint off.. this is no buneo..
