has that bike got a single downtube conversion or is it a tank tunnel weld on?
I'm changing the tank on my 400 at the moment... going for a sporty but with a single downtube.. but I like the look of the cb650c tank too.. it kinda breaks its back tho...
Irishsteve
11-20-2010, 09:11 PM
meant to say that tank sat straight on without fitting a single down tube.. the tunnel needs welding at the front but you can do it nice if you put your mind to it and also if you keep the pump you can stash it up under the tank..there's a nasty kink in the frame of the older vts that drops down low as it comes to the underseat area.. that tank covers it nicely.. if you look at the stretchtank pic you'll see the tank sitting up at its narrowest...(I'm not putting down stretchtank.. but just using it to describe!)

From what I see its a stock backbone just modified bottom of tank to top mount.
chris.oak
11-21-2010, 02:34 PM
i wounder if you have to cut the bottom of the tank and just replace the mountings and wiled it on the top of the frame?

The easiest harley tank to customize for our frames is the FLH tank. It too has a wide backbone frame. The left coil would need relocated and the airbox would need to be thrown away or what ever solution you had in mind.
pmalloy

Man, that has an amazing line to it. The stock is great, but that takes it to a new level. It's got me thinking for sure.

i dont like big tanks, thats why sportster tank is bought right now. would be nice with peanut or frisco custom tank to but they cost to much. theres no values in bobber shadows so i dont wanna wast to much money on it.
my thought was to just wield a fitting for the front and back fittings that sticks out and have it on top of the frame tube. im gonna have primer red parts all over the bike so cutting and wield the bottom squarish and that bright color will make it butt ugly.
The airbox is thrown away in the garbage as it looks like a toilet seat and hides the engine! much nicer to have the v-twin open for view!

The bike that sikshadow8 posted is a bake with a sporty tank that i built specifically for the honda shadow to fit the dual backbone. I made the bike for a buddy up in the bay area.
My name is TJ Stiles and I have a shop out in Huntington beach. I work on Honda shadows. i dont do harleys... just sayin.
The tunnel is custom fit so you don't have to cut out the backbone or do anything structurally to your bike. Its basically a bolt on sporty tank for the honda shadow VT600CD.
What you also don't see in that picture is the mini sight gauge on the other side of the tank. the tank is made exactly how the guy wanted. he wanted a TINY Instead of making a gauge where the bungs stick out of the tank like every other tank ive ever seen with a sight gauge, I made the bungs completely flush. yeesh i hate that word bung, reminds me of beevis and butthead LOL
If anyone is interested in getting one of these made for them, or if you need any custom work for your shadow, Let me know, I'm in Huntington Beach CA, so if your local feel free to stop by and see what i can do for you or contact me viia any of the mediums below.

Hey Irish Steve, Thanks very much for the kind words.
I charge $350 for the tank plain. That includes the tank with filler neck installed, petcock bung installed and mounts to bolt it to your scoot.
You can have the filler neck installed wherever you want it, to add a touch of custom to your tank.
Add on's can be sight gauges of any length/size, relocated petcock bung, (side mounted), gas caps, and i also offer the service of Kreem coating the inside of the tank, and I only charge for the Kreem product itself.
I have some other developments coming for gas tanks, just nothing cool enough to release yet. =)
let me know if you got any other questions!

TJSTILES

The tank i did held a wee bit over 2 gallons if memory serves me correctly.
it varies from tank to tank, as some people want the tank to sit lower on the split backbone and other people want it to sit higher up.
Next tank i do, ill measure it out.

i have only seen one vlx the (green horse) with an "indian larry" style dished tank...I am a big fan of these tanks and would like to find one to fit the vlx 600 that i am building...i want it to fit and not just sit on top of the frame like many of the sporty tanks seem to be mounted...
Yeah sure i could cut the sides out and flip them and do it my self but after taking my tank to some mates who are metal fabricators i am not keen to go down that path..Its a bigger job than it first appears to be..
Mates who own harleys are getting them to fit no worries as they will mount straight on.
Though interestingly enough all the tanks that they imported form the states had to be lined with a special tank sealer product coz they will leak if you dont.
Any one know where i could find one?????????????????

He'll yeah...both of those things you just shipped and also wanted to see if you have any bolt on options for solo seat, rear fender and a hard tail strut
well i have about 40 things people are asking me to create and im doing what i can to meet demands LOL
Solo Seat - i mocked up a pretty simple bracket that fits either under or on top of the rear tank mount on the shadow, using the stock bolt, but i have to figure out a way to mill out the ovalized holes for adjustment... workin on that.
Rear fenders - I have been using various sizes of trailer fenders, sometimes narrowed, for a rear fender, they are thick enough gauge to take some pounding and when installed correctly, will last for friggin ever. ive had one on my vlx for years and beat the shite out of it and it works great.
now you can go to about a million websites and buy whatever fender you want for these bikes. no biggie
Hard tail Strut -
go get your self some 1 inch square steel tubing, and you can cut it to the desired length, i believe 8.75 is what i used, and bolt it in place of your mono shock =)
other than that im still trying to scrape together the money to afford enough tubing to work on a hardtail kit for the vlx, basically you would buy the kit and make a few cuts on your bike, then weld in the kit. a lot more work designing than i thought. I have to make it simple enough so that it can be replicated multiple times, and make a design that people will like the looks of.
let me know fi you have any more questions duder!

If you're gonna mount a sporty tank 'Frisco style, (on top of the frame), that stock air box stuff has gotta go! Needs some air space below the tank to look right.

on to the good stuff, you can go one of two directions, you can modify your frame, or build a whole new frame or you can get a sporty tank on your bike. ive been building sporty tanks specifically for the honda shadow now for a few years, you've probably seen some of the tanks ive done floatin around out there. its infinitely cheaper than doing frame modification and all you need to do when you get the tank is paint it however you want, bolt it on, hook up your fuel and off you go. i can do sight gauges, petocks on the sides of the tank, and put the fuel filler neck wherever you want it. if you want more details feel free to hit my up via email or phone. info is on my blog heres a link to my blog - http://www.tommyjeanbrutalcustoms.blogspot.com
