They say bad things happen in threes, I hope I am there.

First, my computer died Friday nite, the virus program picked up all sorts of things and then I Explore went down. Done..... I had a background picture but no icons.
Went out and bought a new computer, nothing special since it was a rush purchase. But it is way better then the old one was, so I am happy.

Then, the wife units loser cruiser was scheduled for brakes this morning. Got a letter in the mail from Chrysler extending the warranty on the brakes and then the next day, the brakes start grinding. Almost like they knew? Took it in and they extended warranty is 2 years, ownership is 2 years, 1 and a half months. Called the 1-800 bitch line and got no where. So I bought new pads, took the rotors to work to grind 'em smooth again and while working on it...... number 3.

Wife calls me and asks, "Why did you take 20 grand out of the line of credit?"

Ummmm.... WTF? Checked online.... And sure enough, 20 g's out. 10 of it paid to god knows who's account, 1,900 paid to someones Credit card, 3g's wire transferred out, the kids accounts drained, both my accounts as low as the overdraft will go..... That is when the sinking feeling hit. Got to the bank ASAP and the fraud department was all ready on it. So, all my accounts are frozen, my credit cards all canceled and I sit here with $2.84 cents in change in my pocket. This seriously sucks. While canceling cards, I found out a couple of them had been hit today as well, most were attempts at over my limits since I keep them nice and low. Tried a $3100 online purchase atone store, over double my limit there, thankfully. And thankfully the bank hit up 10 grand with a hold since it seemed out of the ordinary, not that I won't get it back, just banks move at a snail pace.

So, mods are on hold. The fender I want from Customizer is out of the question and not sure how to sell parts to those buying. Paypal is down and out right now. Sorry guys, will PM you about money orders?

So, I hope that is my three.....

One word of advice if I may. Be sure to file a police report on the identity theft. Same thing happened to me several years ago and I got it fixed up and my money back. Then last year I need to replace my busted up old car and I can't get a loan because I have a half dozen collections on my report from the stuff the perps bought before my cards were cancellation. I needed the police report to prove fraud to the credit reporting agencys and get the collections cleared.

Facebook has a virus going on currently. I read that if you interact with anyone on the friends list that has had it, you'll get it too.

Phishing is pretty popular today. Little HTML programs capture your keystrokes and record them for a distant user. That user then has your passwords to everything you do while the program collects the info. Online banking is secure, but not if someone logs into your account with all the proper info that has been collected by phishing. Happens alot.

Ever track your emails and where they go compared to their intended destination? My dad tracked mine a couple times trying to discourage my online endeavors. I could send him an email here in the same town, by time all was said and done, it went to a Korean network and back again. At that point it's open to compromise again. It's a gamble using the internet for certain thing...especially money transfers and banking.

I would heavily suggest baselining that computer. That will bring it back to factory again. You will lose data that you saved, but if you salvage all the data from the hard drive yourself, other programs could have been embedded into your personal stuff to start the cycle again. Definitely worth getting it done by professionals that have the latest greatest software to check it all out. Seems fishy...computer goes down and money comes up missing. Just sayin'

Oh, yes I know he bought another computer, but the old one's probably still good and can be fixed for cheap...then sold on Ebay.

Well, it definitely seems they got in through the old computer. I had a computer guy I know stop by today and seriously check the new one out. Everything seems good there and he beefed up all security on it. Even to the point of running Firefox and all sorts of cleaners set up to run regularly. Sucks to have to log in to this site every time I come, but better then losing 15 g's again.

He will probably be re doing the old computer for me once things get back to normal. One computer for the kids and us to run amok online, and one dedicated to the online banking. He did suggest to NEVER have online banking and a file sharing program like Limewire on the same computer. Probably a damn good idea in hind-site. Something you should all think about if you have both.

I will be hitting the police up tomorrow, not convinced they will do anything but having the report will be good. Always good to have something on file if something comes up later.

So far, I have no idea what is up. Going in to the bank tomorrow to straighten some things out. I do everything by direct deposit or authorized debit. My paycheck, the wife's government funding for her daycare, all our bills, mortgage, insurances etc. Kinda hard to do with a froze account. The computer tech who came over works with computers all day long, goes to all sorts of people homes to work on their machines. He has met no one in 20 years that this has happened to. Lucky me. He does know of one person at his wife's work that got a pay statement snagged from the mail and cleaned out. Took her a full year for the bank to reimburse her. And they stiffed her with interest charges. I guess that would be better then being out 15 g's, but I sure as hell hope it won't take that long.

Will post more as I know it.

Ahh, a great idea to get me out of trouble. Write cheques on a frozen account with 0 clams in it. All I need are a bunch of insufficient funds charges to fix this mess......

Damn TI that really sucks. This is just a guess but since im in the IT field and I've seen this before it might be right.

You got a virus on your comp called a key logger , what it does is monitor every key you type on your keyboard including account numbers, passwords and pins. It then sends it to the virus creator. Really good ones are good at hiding from virus scanners and alot of the new ones are not virus's at all but a new type called malware. This in alot of cases can be even worse and harder to get rid of.

That person then basically just keeps saving up your info until he has all the info he needs to strike. Once then over a day or two they will wipe you clean as much as possible. Random buys from internet sites, open other credit using your info, purchase at stores using cloned cards that are made from your info (you would be surprised how easy it is to make a clone credit card with equipment bought off the net)

Luckily for you most banks now are hip to the fraud issues and tricks they use and will refund all money used this way, only problem is like you said takes them forever sometimes.

Definitely file a police report as to cover your ass for later down the line, if you get credit repercussions.

FYI - a couple of good free programs that will help you with this are:

Avast - Free Version
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download

Malwarebytes - Free Version
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

These two combined Ive put on all my family and friends computers and they have been good so far. Although my buddy that likes the porn tends to still get stupid virus's I have to clean for him every couple weeks or so. Glad hes an alcohol distributer and pays me in bottles of top shelf liquor.

Good luck with this brotha.

Ya I used to use AVG they are comparable to Avast. I just found that Avast uses up less system resources. AVG is another good free virus software.

LOC, Do you know... by installing that stuff, will it slow a pc down?
And also, All the script that runs on the internet (back ground) anything out there to stop it?

And also, All the script that runs on the internet (back ground) anything out there to stop it?Avast & AVG will not slow a computer down anywhere close to what Norton's or McAfee does. And far as Malwarebytes, the free version does not run all the time. It will only update and scan when you prompt it to. (from what I've seen using it on my computers.)

Yeah, we did the malware on my new computer, and he installed a new antivirus program. Supposed to be one of the best out there, can't remmeber the name but was nothing I had heard of before. Know the guy for years though, so I trust his judgement.

He said keystroke logger too. Die bastard, DIE!!!!

And I did file a police report. They won't do much unless the bank wants them too. They prety much leave it up to the fraud depts to do their thing. I thought as much, but still wanted it to be logged.

Like neal said both AVG and AVAST are really lite on resources. Malwarbytes you only run it once a week or so and you will be fine, it doesnt run in the background unless you buy the full version which I ran for a week and got irritated with all the websites it blocked. (im a bit of a torrent whore so I go to some shady sites)

AVAST has a script blocker built into it and will warn you when you get to a site and/or depending on settings not even let you go to them. Full version of AVAST is actually a good deal too if you wanna pay for it has some cool features like sandboxy which lets you install software and try it without actually installing it on your system. Kinda like running it virtually.
