First off, I know this is a Shadow forum but I want some opinions on a situation. I ran across a bike for sale in the Bike Trader Magazine yesterday. It is a 2001 Honda CBR 929RR listed for $3500. It did not say what size cc it was in the ad though. A very fast and expensive machine. I emailed the guy to see if it was still available and this is what he had to say. This is copied straight from the email. "

The bike is still for sale. Never had any mechanical problems. I must tell you that I had to move to UK one month ago with my work and I took the bike with me hoping to drive it here as well. I work in Public relations departament at a hotel here and

nobody would do it. I have tried to sell it locally but it was not succesfully. That is why I am trying to sell the bike back in USA, there will be no further problems .The shipping and handling ar included in the price.

I see "overseas" bike scams on craigslist all the time. Bikes are listed for way too cheap, you send money, you get nothing. Maybe this one is a scam, maybe not, but you know what they say about stuff that's too good to be true. I'd probably let this one pass.

I'd try to do some research on the emissions stuff over there. I know bikes get imported to the netherlands from here and there doesn't seem to be a problem. In fact, used shadows seem to go for way more money over there than over here

Walletscraper Thanks for th input Pegs. Anyway, I just remembered that I work with a guy that lived in Greece for awhile and brought a foriegn bike back to the states. He said that as long as it meets the EPA standards for here it would pass there, as long as he didn't modify the exhaust. It looks like he has done that and maybe why they won't let him register it. But fuck, why not just buy a stock exhaust, put it on, register and then change it out?

:dunno: I lived in england for 2 years and i have friends that had buells,gixxers,ninjas all of them american specs and i never heard any complains about anything the only problem one of them had was that over there to get your motorcycle endorsment you start with a very low cc bike like a moped and after some time you can go to a higher cc , and to let you know bikes in england are race bikes compared to bikes over here so, i smell something

When I was stationed overseas I wanted to buy a Jaguar and send it home. What prevented me from doing this is the fact that I would have had to upgrade the emissions to conform to U.S. standards and install safety glass in the vehicle.

Now from what I understand, European emission standards are lower than the U.S. So why would he need to convert the emissions equipment on the bike to a LOWER standard? Also what about all the military personnel that are stationed in Europe and the UK, did they have to change their cars around??? Granted they are only assigned to most places there for 3 years or so tops. But as this guy said He gets moved around a lot.

Also look at the syntax of his email. For someone in the PR business, he sure can't write worth a shit.

Personally, I'd look somewhere else. If the deal sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I think everyone has given you great advice. Ebay is full of scams similar to the way this sounds. They will even offer to use Western Union for security. ie, they don't release the money until you say so...............doesn't work, the money is gone long before you realize you've been scammed.
Keep your money on this side of the pond and you'll find something that won't leave you riding a $3500 wish.

Remember, eBay or not, if the deal sounds to good to be true, IT IS!!! Don't fall prey to these stupid fucking people. I have been in the investigations field for almost 10 years now. They prey on people that are elderly mostly but now with eBay they can do it to everyone. Sport bikes is one of the biggest scams on eBay. Selling $10,000 plus bikes for only a fraction of the cost. They get you to commit to "purchase", you end up sending 1/2 the money, and boom, you've been ass fucked!!! Everyone be careful, we don't need anymore victims out there. Especially no one from here!!!! That fucking guy needs another hole in his head to breathe out of!! Okay, have to go get my coffee, then it's off to the jail to interview a guy that ran a police officer over with a stolen car! The officer shot him, but unfortunately didn't kill him. Maybe some of you guys can verify this - but I checked a couple of web sites out that verify VIN Numbers for Motorcycles. Both threw out a red flag.

My first attempt showed the VIN was invalid, but I discovered I was missing a Number. Second attempt said the VIN No was valid but there were records pertaining to this VIN, that may indicate a problem.... DUH! However additional information is only available if your willing to pay for it. So it could be something very minor or just the opposite.



One source was Carfax (site for Motorcycles) and the other was Esperion.

We need to get a new section in the forums for just such a task. Keep the thread current with only one scammer in the thread. I have to admit, this has been quite interesting to watch as it unfolds.

The bike is still for sale. Never had any mechanical problems. I must tell you that I had to move to UK one month ago with my work and I took the bike with me hoping to drive it here as well. I work in Public relations departament at a hotel here and
because of this job I change my home quite often. Here I had an unpleasant surprise because the bike is an US model and to pay the registration here in Europe, to pass all the emissions and standards and many other would be quite expensive and
nobody would do it. I have tried to sell it locally but it was not succesfully. That is why I am trying to sell the bike back in USA, there will be no further problems .The shipping and handling ar included in the price.

So that web address actually is being served up in San Diego. Doesn't mean the company is located there. You can have webhosting where ever you want. If I had a site I can host offshore to protect myself if I choose to. It's done all the time in some 'shady' businesses on the net.
I wasn't a scammer, but I did have a site that was hosted up in Canada, then we had to move it off-shore when they changed some laws up here.

Pegs, I do have an Email acct. for special uses. I did a little baiting last year and took the advice offered on 419eater.com. They specialize in baiting Nigerian scammers.

If I say OK, then he'll give me a tracking # from "his" shipper which I'm sure will show the bike coming at me!!

If he's not using a proxy server, we can get his IP from the email header. It's in the properties of the email. Right click on the email, go to properties, and then to "details" tab and then "message source" . On that page, you'll need to look down it will have his email address and then an IP behind it.
Something like this:
Received: from JOE BLOW ([223.34.3.1])
There'll be a bit of stuff there showing your server and that, but if you know what to look for, his information is there as well. I can run neotrace on the IP and get a location of his server.
If he's using a proxy server, it'll point to where that is located.
