View Full Version : Why do you ride a 750cc?
akrich2995

I bought my bike thinking 750cc was good enough to do everything I wanted it to do... Turns out I was right and then some. Lot's of people I know think 750 is week or not enough... not enough for what?? I don't race... It rides me and my chic on the back with ease and it looks and sounds better then a lot of 1300 and 1800's I've pulled up next to. So needless to say... I'm good. I would like to get a VTX 1300 to have as a really comfortable bagger, but that's for longer trips and the keep the passenger happy. Other than that... BJ has done me well. I think some people get bigger bikes for the same reasons people buy Harleys.... they just don't know any better. I've seen tiny ass guys and chics on big ass bikes... and the first thing i watch for is when they slow down at a light or take off and they start wobbling and teetering! LOL! I'm not doggin' anyone who rides the bigger bikes because like I said... I want one myself.... so don't anyone get your panties in a bunch... just wondering what do you guys think.

It was cheap and gets good gas mileage. Plus i needed an easy bike to learn on considering ive never rode a dirt bike or even a 4 wheeler

Well man, I ride a 750 because, like you said, it has enough power to get me around but the main selling point is that it's light weight and low.
Sure there may be some bikes I see that look cool and they are bigger, I dont want them for the power, just maybe the looks, but then i'm trading off for heavy weight. Having a bike that does not weight as much makes for a more maneuverable and better handling bike in my opinion. I don't do burn outs on bikes or street race so power doesn't get me off. I drive a honda civic as well and I could of bought something fast if I wanted...Just dont care as long as it has some pick up!

I ride a 600 and it suits me just fine with one exception. I am lite, (155) and the bike is lite (around 500). On the interstate with a cross wind or a big truck passing, I get blown around quite easily. So for that reason, I wil be moving up a little next year. But I'm still keeping the VLX cause it is awesome for riding locally and cruising the back roads. And to be honest, I just really want one of the Fury's. And basically.......see below!

I've only been riding for about a year now, but when I first got the spirit everyone was worried that I had a 750 for my first bike. It's not a fast bike, but it's not a slow bike. Its a good happy medium. The reason why I went with a honda (a) It's reliable (b) $$$ (c) a good friend of mine got a VLX a few months before and loves it! I've also been thinking of getting a VTX 1300....a little more room. And alot more comfortable on the highway. The spirit's a little bumpy and wobbly. I may just chop up the back of the spirit and make it a bobber and get the VTX for the day trips. All in all, love the spirit!!!

Just happened to roll up on my bike with the wife and kids. It was sitting on a guys front lawn for sale. Caught my eye, and looked over at the wife. She then told me "What the hell. You work hard enough, go buy it." Love how it sits low to the ground, and the 21" up front. Now just making it my own. :jamming:

Crashed 81 Goldwing (1100). No bike for almost two years. 99 Yukon horrible gas mileage. Pay cut (construction). Craigs list trade straight up? Either 750 Magna (ok shape - needs work), 1100 Shadow (needs lots of work), or 750 Shadow Spirit in showroom condition and so beautiful it made my eyes water. No contest.
Enough power to move my big butt around and occasionally my daughter (wife is disabled and can't ride anymore). Great mileage. Tons o' fun! WHEEEEEEEE!

I was in the market for the 900 Triumph America, I'd just seen one that was bobbed for sale at the local Triumph dealership, less than 18 miles and priced at 11k, I'd always been impressed with British Steel, Norton's, Triumphs BSA's....and when Triumph reintroduced the Bonneville as a 900, I just had to have one, then I saw the America.....just for shits and giggles I walked into a Honda Show Room and this VT750DC whispered my name when I walked by, I couldn't believe it was only a 750., I tried to ignore it and as I was leaving I had to walk by it again and damned if it didn't whisper my name again.........told my wife I had something for her to see if she didn't mind, she went to the show room with me and out of the 3 dozen or so cruisers they had walked right up to it and said, you don't even have to tell me which one whispered your name. It went home with me about 1 hour later, with my wife riding it and me following behind in the van. I told her she had to be the first and only person in this world to ride it besides me, just so that I could admire it with someone tooling down the road on it.

yeah I mean, I posted why I got a 750cc engine size, but it seems the tone is now "why I got my type of shadow". Well, I compared every brand 750cc engine in it's class all side by side on the internet haha. Honda, Vstar, Kawi, Harley, Triumph, Suzuki... and I then narrowed it down to price...Honda, Vstar, Kawi, Suzuki.
I then narrowed it down to looks.....Honda.
I then got online to see if the shadow spirit was customizable and found this site. I looked at some of the more extreme chops here and I was like "holy shit". Looked at the less extreme but way custom and went "I can do that". I went and bought the bike and haven't even looked at buying another bike.

Ok... this is quickly becoming one of my favorite threads... good stuff on here. You almost brought me to tears McV... Real quick... I named her Barbara Jean because when I was 16 I told my grandma that when I got my license I was going to take her riding all of the time. Well... 16 year old boy... car... girls... Who's grandma? She past away during my last year in the Marine Corps 2001. So when I got the bike... I named her Barbara Jean so that I could finally take her on that ride! Now... we ride all the time, and I'm sure she enjoys it a lot more now rather than being cooped up in my old hatchback! with no A/C (high school car) :jamming:

Having always had sportbikes, I'd be damned if my first cruiser was gonna be an 800-lb tub. I asked for the lightest, most stripped-down cruiser they had on the floor that was bigger than a 600cc, and they showed me the Shadows. Price was right, bike felt nimble, and here we are.
I had originally wanted a Sportster 883, until I test-rode one. Blah. No comparison, the Spirit blows it out of the water in handling and balls. I do like the looks of the Sporty better, but the Shadow's are easily tweaked to my liking.

I'm a 5'4" fat boy witha 29" inseam....after laying my 82 GS850GL down more times than i can count at red lights, stop signs, etc because i was always tiptoeing the thing. I sold it and started searching....A local guy had it and after test riding it I fell in love with it.
Plenty of power for me and not too bad on solo road trips. I did recently buy a VTX1300 because me and the wife both on the 750 were kinda stretching the load limit a little bit!!!
OK,OK,OK shut the hell up....we were blowing the fucking load limit out of the water all right!!!

I went with a 750 because I had never really rode before, and it's a nice medium sized bike. After riding it for a couple of years, I realized how perfect was, and now I don't really have a desire for a bigger bike.

+1. Short guy (5'4") (and on the round, aerodynamic side)
Also, I was just getting back into riding after not riding for around 18 years. I use to have a 400cc and knew I wanted at least a 750. I had a chance to borrow a friend's 1985 Shadow 750 a few years earlier and liked it. Kinda like McV. I walked into the dealership and when I saw it I knew it was mine. (sure has changed alot since I got it though.....ha ha)

Hadn't ridden in over 28 years. It needed to be cheap to get past the wife, the cost of gas for the truck equaled the bike payment. I don't need a big bike just to make up for having a short dick, what I got works for me and the wife. Has the look I wanted and I made it better imo. Great gas mileage. ALthough it didn't talk to me, when I sat on it for the first time, I felt like I had been there before and it felt good like my favorite pair of jeans and boots. Never believed in paying for a name brand at twice the cost when I can get better quality for half the price. Even with all the changes I still have less in it than the entry level HD cost.

For years I dreamt of riding, although, thought it would be a few years before I could justify buying a bike... then in November my brother shows me a bike for sale online, 2007 VT750C2, mint condition, 9000 km's (Canuckian for 5592 miles) and cheap. I didn't have my license yet, but couldn't pass her up. So, stored her for the winter, got my license first thing in the spring, and for my first bike, she's awesome, low slung, nice sounding ('specially with the hole saw mod), good looking, and very cheap to operate, especially for insurance for me. Here in Ontario, we have graduated licensing for bikes as well as cars... Until you have your full motorcycle endorsement, most insurance companies will tell you to stay under that 900 cc mark, to avoid rates that are sometimes more than double.
I ride the 401 hy once in a while and sure, a 6th gear would be great, but often, I look down, and without realizing, have hit the 130 km/h (again, Canuckian for 80 mph) without realizing it. I look at the new 1300's and dream, but for now, this is all I need, and thanks to communities like this, I can do a lot of fun customizing and modding on my own. It makes it "MY" bike!

My C2 is a daily rider. It is the perfect combination of power, balance and handling. Easy to ride in city traffic and more than capable of scootin' down the highway when I need it to. I can't think of why I would need anything bigger.

Have to say that the girl i was with before i met my beautiful wife rode too.Wanted to get a Harley but flat refused to ride bitch when she wanted to ride.Went to local dealer that carries alot of used bikes and there sat 2 SS,an 03 and 05.Two bikes at less than the price of one harley.Bought the bikes and had a great time riding but She left at the first of winter and took all her Drama bullshit with her(thank god).Come spring i had two bike with two payments,Had my mind made up that I was going to trade both bikes in for a Harley.Hauled both into the shop. After dealing with a salesman, they were only going to give me less than what i gave for one bike for a trade in.Hauled them back home, sold the 03 and started adding small stuff to the bike.Surfing the net looking for local rides and stumbled across Shadowriders and Chrome whore.I seen what other guys were doin to these bikes and had to follow suite. It`s been fun modding, riding and meeting all the Brothers on here.Have to say that i`m glad i didn`t trade for that damn Harley.

so yesterday i decided to go for a nice long ride. one of my hoochies text to see what i was doing and when i told her, she wanted to ride with me. rode over to her house and she had a little 883 sporty sitting there ready to go. not to bad a little bike but that thing is NO match for the SS, in style, looks, or performance. we probably rode 70 or 80 miles total which turned out to be a nice ride. every time we stopped she would just stare at the SS. now she wants one, she hates that damned HD. of course i told her where there is an 05 right here in town for sale we'll see if she gets it.

B/c my dick is big enough . And I'm old enough to remember when a 500 was considered huge . My 750 ACE is the perfect combination of weight , handling , reliability , cost , and big-bike looks , ideal for all types of riding . Most people think it's at least a 1000cc (and a Hardley) anyway . Yeah , 20 more HP would be nice but not with a weight penalty of 100 pounds . If I want speed , my 05 RC51 does nicely .

well for one I am only 5'8" probably about 145lbs tops
my girl is like 130 so its pretty much like an 1100 for my size... I did look at 1100's however almost bought an older Suzuki Intruder 1400
But the Shadow was what I was really looking for and the 750 price was too good to pass up ($2100).... I am getting teh sprockets changed as we speak as I do find myself looking for 6th gear a lot. I am going with a 39t should be nice from all I have heard!
I was looking into a hypercharger but I don't really want to lose any WATERPROOFING.... so I think i am gonna try to stay with the stock air cleaner, K/N High Velocity filter,Cobra Slashcuts, and stage 1 rejet least that is the plan at the moment I am in Houston and this place can get pretty wet outta nowhere Last thing I need is to be dead in the water

I had to sell my bike when I got divorced. That was back in 1998. I went through hard times and 10 years without a bike. I got a little cash in my pocket and went to a tow yard that was auctioning off vehicles and 3 bikes. I had no idea what I was looking for other than something with 2 wheels and it ran...it fit the bill but boy was it in bad shape. It's been fun putting it back together and then taking it multiple steps further and making it into the vision I have in my head of how I want it to be.
So, unlike most of you that did your research, I bought mine on a whim and it really worked out well for me.

Decided 3 years ago I was sick of telling my wife I was going to buy a bike. Signed up for the PAMSP class, got my license, next weekend bought the SS750DC. It was a dealer demo for $1800 off. I'm 5'10" ~230# and always said it would be my FIRST bike and the VTX 1800 would be my second. My upgrade occurred just under 3 weeks ago.

I visit craigslist a lot just to see what's being sold and to check out the other bikes and what they are selling for. Other than one of the larger cruisers like a HD Road King, Streetglide, or the VTX there is not another bike out there that I think is better than the Shadow (Both looks wise and definately price wise). And even then, I'm not so sure they are better bikes, just bigger. In my opinion I don't think there is a HD that is better than my Shadow. The Sportsters, Dyna's, Softails and even the Fatboys don't have anything above my Shadow. I would not gain anything by owning one and my wallet would be a lot lighter. I'm not putting down any other bikes....just saying that I am real happy with my Shadow. But it is a good question. Why do I ride a Shadow 750? It is a perfectly reliable, decent sized/priced and resonably powered bike with good looks and styling that is cheap to insure. Man, a jump to a 1000 almost doubles my insurance and a sport bike will get me to speeds that will kill me. I am happy with the 750, I would like a new 1300 Sabre, but can't see paying the jump in insurance..... man it would hurt.

Here in canada, we are gouged... I pay $1050 a year for my 750 Spirit, and from everyone I have spoken with, that is cheap, for a novice rider, especially...
You guys in the States get some pretty cheap rates...
Plus, the Honda's and imports are so much cheaper than the HD's
I was recently getting a quote and she had the wrong quote's chart open and before calculating half of the costs, she was well over what I was currently paying, then she realized she was on the Harley page, not the Honda page.
it must have spoke to her . i never had a bike before & only road one twice . i was gonna go buy another 4wlr & she said how about that instead . i love it & wouldn't trade it for anything !

With full insurance I would be almost 1200 a year on the 750. A 1300 would run me around 1800. It's a BIG jump that I so far haven't deemed worthwhile. It's also why I won't test ride one, I don't want to take the chance of falling in love.

I just saw some friends who moved east post on FB that they bought a bike for the wife - a Sabre 1100 which she promptly dumped and said "Not used to something this big but I just got right back on!" Now this is not a big girl, and her husband can't be breaking more than 5'2" so IMHO this is too much bike for a girl who I believe has only every ridden dirt bikes. But I do recall the husband saying 600's and 750's were too small.
LISTEN PEOPLE - DON'T BE SUCH DICKHEADS ABOUT POWER THAT YOU PUT YOURSELF AND YOUR SPOUSE AT RISK! New riders (and every time you get a new bike you're a new rider) need to start where they can build comfort. Remember it only has to be your first, or next bike, not your last. I hope to god she doesn't get hurt.
...happy to ride a 600....

I am glad to have the Spirit 750, nice and low slung, great center of gravity, it was perfect for me to learn on and get comfortable. I am looking bigger, in the next couple years though, on the highway, without a 6th gear, or a little more power, over 100 km/h, this bike is a little underpowered... but other than that, completely happy!

750 is the right size and weight. my first one was SS and I was in love.
this one is an Areo, bit lower and longer. I love it too. have a friend has a harley and bitches all the time that her azz hurts after a couple hours. I have never had that problem (hear others with same complaint) they all seem to be replacing their seats I put a sheep skin on and never have taken if off or bitched about the comfort factor. Since I have added my "training wheels" I do wish for a little more power and am also looking for that 6th gear. but I can keep up with the tribe and with some even ahead. I love my areo and would not go higher. (insurance stopped me) and then realized (before training wheels) that it zipped around town pretty good and 5'7" at 150 pounds was and is the perfect size. (for me anyways)

+1 to N_Clark, i absoloutely love my vlx. when i bought it everyone said its too small. now they are surprised at how fast it is. i get up too 75 mph real quick now to cruise and top speed is 105mph plenty fast for me. people just got to do a little tunin. and like my father always said its 90% rider 10% bike. never rode a 750 but i bet its just plenty powerful enough. my 600 is.

With full insurance I would be almost 1200 a year on the 750. A 1300 would run me around 1800. It's a BIG jump that I so far haven't deemed worthwhile. It's also why I won't test ride one, I don't want to take the chance of falling in love.Holy shit batman ! ! Insurance for my 750 is about $215 a year for full coverage. But in NJ motorcycle insurance doesn't cover any medical. Couldn't imagine paying 1200 a year. :freak:

I pay $1300 a year in Ontario, I'm with State Farm and they go buy the size of your motor, it doesn't matter if it's a Honda or a Harley. Insurance in Ontario is a scam.

A lot of insurance charges here, are for that very reason, liability and coverage for loss of use, medical coverage, etc... But it's still a rip off... Plus alot of them try to recoup losses, and pass that buck onto all policy holders.

I am with State Farm as well, they are the cheapest usually for bikes... They don't care if it's a crotch rocket or cruiser, just size... I thought their quotes were slightly higher for Harley's though because of the Higher "value" but now that you mention it, my brother got a quote on a larger Harley, than his Aero 750, and it was only a few hundred more, for the larger bike!

i saw my ACE for sale on Craigslist and loved the fact that it looked like a classic but since it's a Honda it wouldn't leave me stranded on the side of the road somewhere....it's my first bike and outside of really, really wanting a Rocket III i'll be sticking with the Blue Bomber for a long time

NOPE you have no bikes, NO PICS = NO BIKES
I love my 750 and actually think it rides better 2 up with my lady on the back. I cruise at 80 with no issues.

Thanks guys. We bought the Shadow last month and are trying to locate a suitable solution to the fender. We want to side mount the tag and install an LED tail light/turn signal setup. Searching for a solution we like.

I ride a 750 because it came with flames on the gas tank! But seriously, I read a lot before I bought, and have always had a soft spot for Hondas (my first ride was a 78 CR250 Elsinore in 1993) and decided this was my perfect first bike. Plus for 6k brand new it was hard to pass up! With over 30k on the bike I don't regret one mile of it. The only thing I regret is not riding more!

I put 12k a year on mine. Love how it handles in city traffic but also not afraid to ride 800 miles on the interstate. With the sprocket change, I can easily keep up with traffic.

the shadow 750 was recommended as a good first bike. started doing research and couldn't find anyone with anything bad to say about it. got about 1100 miles under the belt now and couldn't be happier.

After I decided to get back up on two wheels, the Shadow 600 VLX was my first choice. Then I sat on a new 750 Spirit at the dealer, 6200.00 was as low as he'd go. Bank ok'd the deal and I was ready to pull the trigger, when a guy in the neighborhood told me about an '02 750 ACE. Dual carbs, chain drive, low miles, priced right, what's not to like? Three tanks of gas later, It's all good!

I bought mine in april, have almost put 3k on it and love it. I ride with all bigger bikes and they can pull away getting up to 100 but im not sitting in the back looking like a duck either. I can also rail corners better than the bigger guys so to me its all a give and take. I have no problems on the highway with stock gears(have a fresh set of 17/38 and xring just waiting for the old chain to be at max stretch and am contemplating hard tailing...) but am a lil wound out at 80. A lot of people talk shit but when i look around they arent on their harleys or big cc bikes and i ride almost everywhere so fuck them. Oh and 35-45mpg depending on wrist habbits is nice too. I also like the weight and size. I wanted a bike i could load in the truck bed and take with me while traveling for work and the 750 is easy.
