Did you ever get a gift certificate from someone and forget about it? It happened to me. My brother and his girlfriend had given me a gift certificate for Hot Leathers last Christmas. Somehow it got packed away after the holiday and I just found it. Unfortunately, it expired 4 days ago! Iwas pissed at first but remembered someone mentioning once that it is illegal to put expiration dates on gift certificates. Looked online and found a site that lists the legislation for each state regarding this.

I called the store and asked the girl if I could still use it and she said no because it's expired. I asked her if she knew it was against the law to include expiration dates. She got a really nervous tone in her voice and said "No, I didn't. And I wasn't working here last year." I told her that I wasn't blaming her. She said she'd have to call her boss. I figure I'll call their corporate office tomorrow and see what they say.

On Rhode Island state website it says in the general laws that stores can be fined for doing this.

Some disclose on their gift certificates/cards that they are good for one year (I think it has to be printed on the card or accompanying documentation). Others, if they aren't used within that year, will start deducting a certain percentage monthly until the balance is used.

Probably varies from state-to-state. Where they are incorporated are the laws that govern their policies.

Talk nice to corporate, they'll probably honor the card and you might get some free stuff out of it.

OK WTF DOES THIS MEAN.
N.M. Stat. Ann. §7-8A-1 et seq.
Gift certificate is presumed abandoned three years after December 31st of the year it was sold. If redeemable in merchandise only, amount abandoned is 60 percent of the certificate’s face value.

It means if you have a $100 certificate, after the three year rule, you cannot redeem it for cash, and the $100 value would only be worth $40.00.

I would imagine that there are not too many gift certifcates floating around that are 3 years old or older.

BE NICE but BE FIRM as well.

There should be no reason why a gift certificate should not be honored regardless of the time it took to redeem it. Anyone tells you differ is full of hot air.

Thats bullshit,:madani: no gift certificate should expire, its basically like a debit card with a limit. the store already got their money, so you should be able to use it anytime as long as the store is open
