since it is water-based paint would it have to soak in (wood or plastic). i wonder if it would even work with metal. cool trick though.

Yeah it is not water based. I found this link for those wanting a little more info on the technique. http://www.theswirling.com/ . I think I am going to try it on some spare parts I have laying around. I will post pics if I can get down to the garage today.

OMG. that is some good shit right there. It looks like you have a certain degree of control over the pattern as well. Awesome post.

That is bad as hell. If anyone does it, make sure you post pics. I would love to see how it would come out on a bike.

me and my dad talked about it and it is oil-based for the paint to sit on top. the only problem now is finding a tub or barrel big enough for gas tank and a frame. are you limited on two colors?

Can't see why you couldn't add a 3rd color. but I'm not a paint guy, so I could be wrong.

A 50 gallon drum won't work. The surface area of the water has to hold enough paint to wrap the tank completely. The best way to get the size needed would be to take a piece of saran wrap and wrap the tank with a couple of inches of excess where it meets. Then take that off and spread it out. That is the minimum size of the water surface area you will need. I'm guessing a tank with at least a 4ft. across would be sufficient. The water only has to be deep enough to submerge the part.
I can't wait to get to painting to try this.

HMMMM, thats a good point! you would be PISSED if you dipped your tank and only painted 1/2 of it!
you could go to a farm supp store and git a stock tank. that would dubble as a BIG ass bear cooler for your BBQs:drink:
