I used the search function and found some about rim painting but nothing detailed. I would love to powder coat but the only shop around me wants like 150 to do both and 75 to do just my drag bars black. How do I prep the rims and what brand paint do I use? I have seen people do some really good work using paint vs powder coat so hopefully someone can tell me. Thanks wonderful overlords, now to go fuck my newb self.

You need to get some "Chrome Etching" primer. It'll cut right through the chrome, rust, etc. and give you a great base coat.........

As for the spokes and nipples, they are not chrome,CLR will strip em to bare metal. I figured this out by accident.

+ this. Personally I'd say don't paint them. They will never look right and eventually turn to crap.

But if you have to sand it down real good with a big grit paper, then use the ruff part of a scotchbrite pad. Then clean everything real good with a de greaser or acetone. Then go to your local auto parts store and look for
KleanStrip ETPO-123B, Bulldog Adhesion Promoter I know it's expensive but will really do the trick if you follow the instructions and shoot your paint in the proper time line after laying the bull dog down. do not wait for a day to shoot your paint on top of the bull dog. (read the instructions) Then shoot it with a couple coats of a good rattle can. (not krylon, or any cheap stuff) get some good rattle can Duplicolor enamel. Then when finished shoot a couple coats of a good clear. Since we are using Duplicolor I'd stay with their clear as well.

No it's not as good as powder coating but if you prep well and take your time using this method, I've seen a few cats that has done this with good results.

good luck.
