View Full Version : Shmut on your rear spokes
Corpsegrinder

I was cleaning the scoot today and noticed my rear spokes are covered in thick film of what I think is chain lube.
I've also read some horror stories of other people destroying the spoke because of the way they are cleaning them. What are you guys and gals using to get the shmut off of your spokes.
My bike is only 3 weeks old and I don't wanna screw it up, yet!

Your ride is rather new, basically dishsoap and water on mine (water alone if not too dirty). Dont use any kind of acid based or abrassive type of cleaner and you will be ok. In cars, there is always a "film" left over when new. This is due to a special wax we use for shipping purpose to protect the paint. It will come off in time but your ride will still look new.
Hope this help (and stay away from grinders and torches, you're a carpenter!)

I tried soap and water. It did nada. The stuff is sticky.
I'll probaby look for some sort of degreaser to remove the stuff I guess.

another good cleaner is the lemon pledge in the aerosol can. I use it for everything on the bike, paint, chrome, and all. It takes the road grime off real good.
Best damn bike cleaner Ive found.

I use the PJ-1 blue label chain lube it dosn't fly of the chain so you don't get the mess.WD-40 works great to clean chain lubes off your wheels. The Hondaline Cleaner is great it is a cleaner and wax in one with a uv blocker I even use it on my crome pipes.

By the way the tooth brushes work but I did not say that it was fast! :-) if you use a good degreaser it is fast... still you have to go one by one.

I had a weekend of rain so did a full detail on the bike and, lemon pledge is awesome. It got all the grime and grease off with ease!!! Very immpressive!! Leaves it with a nice lemonny scent, which I find annoying but my daughters liked it.

I find that WD-40 sprayed on a rag will loosen that stuff up with a little elbow grease. After cleaning it all up and wiping off the excess WD with a paper towel or clean rag, use some chrome/metal polish. Yeah, this all takes a while, but it works! I haven't tried pressure washing my bike yet- I don't want to blast water into the chain, is why.
Hope this helps
