View Full Version : Full face helmets on a cruiser?

When I first started riding, I bought a huge big clunky XL full face helmet and I dont even think the guy sized it right on me. I soon felt it was restricting and bulky and looked too sport bike, so I went to other helmets. I did the German helmets, beanies, and 3/4 bobber helmets. All open face. I digg them and I like not looking like and astronaut, and honestly, the helmet I wear now doesn't even meet DOT standards. I dont care, I dont even need to wear a helmet by law, but I choose to.

I dont know about anyone else, but I feel as if full face helmets look weird on cruisers(not that its not a reason to protect yourself). I feel like they look too sporty. That's why I really stopped wearing one. Recently, ive gotten a gut instinct to go buy a nice full face helmet, even though I dont even really like the looks of them.

What do you all prefer? I swear, it's like every 4 months, I get bored of the helmet I have and I find a reason why it is bothering me or not working right. I am never content. All I want is an all around helmet I can get away with in all seasons and looks good and protects well. I think a matte black full face with dark shield would be...ok.

I know ive seen a poll like this on here before...but I dont care.

I have both, a full face and a half. Around town, to work, to hit the store, it is always the half. If I am heading out of town, heading off down the highway it is the full face. A couple reasons, safety is one, bugs is two and my ears can't take 4 hours with the half is the third.

I am looking for a good old style red baron type now..... always liked those but it needs to be DOT.

I bought a matte black scorpion exo with a chrome shield, looks good and not too overly sporty, but i really dont like wearing it other than riding to work, 40 minute ride at about 65mph. Dont think it vibes too good with the bike, but oh well. I have this really old kunoh helmet that i recently painted that im going to try wearing, the open face style, thinking of getting goggles or something with it, not sure. I dont think i would like the beanie or german style helmet as there is no covering the windblast in the ears.

I have a half and full, but mainly wear the half since I have bought that one. Definitely keeping the full helmet though, never know when I may need to wear it again.

I have a Fulmer half. http://www.nbsupercycle.com/catalog/images/5R%20FLAT%20BLACK.jpg

Bought it, removed the visor, wore it once, and haven't touched it since. The damn thing almost choked me to death (wind). It also makes me look like a friggin' mushroom. I've thought about looking into these

but I'm not sure it would be any better. It would prob still choke the crap out of me (because of the visor). I think a full face is on my christmas list.

after face planting into a truck bumper while on my CBR, i see the benefits of a full face. i still have the visor hanging on my wall it has silver paint in a diamond tread pattern on it. if i hadn't been wearing a helmet (not required here in PA) i would probably not be here.

I cut my teeth on sport bikes...YZF600R/R6/R1. Bought a 1/2 lid when I got my Shadow. Put it up after my first 30 minute freeway ride and dug out my old Shoei
RF-1000. I only go back to the 1/2 for short trips @ low speed.

full face GMax GM68S

Too many people give a shit what they look like on their bike. I'm not one of them. My bike looks good enough without me on it, no need for me to show my face and detract from that look.

All humor aside, though, I don't give a shit what I look like. I saw my dad walk away from hitting a coyote at 80mph on a ninja 500 when I was a kid, and the helmet saved his life. Bike was totaled, but aside from some horrid road rash, he was fine. I'll go no helmet if it's just a short distance, but anything over 2 miles, and the helmet is on.

Drivers in Houston don't give a shit. They'll run your ass over in a heartbeat, and it ain't worth it.

Half helmet for around town/ nice days/ less traffic. I work at night, so riding at night time and to and from work I wear a full face. My road is pretty remote and I worry about hitting animals and drunk drivers, since its fuckin amateur hour when my shift ends.

Like the guy above me said, I don't give a shit about what I look like when I ride. The company I work for is HUGE and we have 50-100 motorcycles every morning, and a lot of guys like to dish out the shit talk about wearing a full face helmet on a cruiser. Oh well I guess, I'm not cool enough to wear a backwards hat and wife beater.

Moin,

I wear a full face helmet (http://images.google.de/images?hl=de&q=caberg%20rhyno&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi). It's a little big on the outside since the manufacturer only has one mold for all sizes I think but I don't really care how I look with it. When going to replace it, I might take some 3/4 but only if it comes with a chin protector of some sort like the Schuberth 1 (http://images.google.com/images?q=schuberth%20j1&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:de:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=de&tab=wi). Beside this I still wear my two-piece leathers most of the year (depending on temperature, below 41°C it's a little bit too refreshing. However, it protected me well when doing my motorcycle licence three years ago, has all the normal protectors in it, is pretty comfortable now and still in good condition. And mostly black, not parrot-colored as many of them are. So I'll keep it as well until it breaks. Better than jeans and t-shirt anyway and better than my other (cold and rainy wheather) textile overall which as well has all the protectors but does not really make me want to slide on the road in it.

Greetings,

Stephan

Like some of you said, I think my bike looks better without anyone on it, so it shouldnt matter what helmet to wear. I definetly try to go with what looks cool, but no matter what I wear, its really not going to matter. Function and practicality is where it counts.

I have however noticed these trends with your feedback and my personal experience:

Full face: too clunky, hot, too sporty? Helps protect against those bugs and wind noise/aerodynamic.

3/4: Looks like an astronaut, unless you buy and old school one like I have, then you have the non-DOT approved which could be pointless in an accident and old interior padding flaking into you eyes even after you clean it out 100 times.

Half Types: These do suck on the highway. I was chocked pretty bad once on highway. Almost had to pull off to the side of the road. I just slowed it down to under 65mph. Feel good in summer though. Usually look weird if not sized right.

Full face. I have a flat black AGV Miglia modular helmet. Very nice since I'm blind without my glasses. I've only rode cruisers and have pretty much always worn a full face. 2 reasons. #1 It may be kind of lame to say, but almost 1/5 motorcycle deaths are results of impacts to the jaw area. I've got a wife and kid at home. #2 I really don't like the feel of a half helmet above about 35 mph. As far as what it looks like, who gives a crap.

I dont care what I look like - my commute to work is 40 miles @ 65-70mph
In the morning around here during April and most of May it is 55 degrees, so that means a full face. Around town or on a Saturday afternoon, I have a Vega 1/2.

I need to get a windshield though....I think that would make a world of difference.

I have a FF that I've worn twice when the weather was cold. Now I wear a 1/2 and have a smallish windshield. That's the perfect combo for me. No bugs, not too much wind that I can't wear my regular glasses, but it's still short enough that I look over it rather than through it.

Always the full face...mine is a modular Fulmer. I've tried halfs in the past and never got comfortable with them especially at highway speed ( I have no windshield).

Right now my favorite set up is a vintage SHOEI 3/4 with a Paulson 5 snap face shield. These shields are not shatterproof, but I found this set up is very comfortable, lets air in, protects me against bugs/dirt and is not too restricting. Also, has a vintage vibe to it.

Lid with a small shield, wouldn't ride if I had to wear a full face, been riding ATVs for years and just couldn't wear one on them, just to closed in and claustrophobic, so when I started riding bikes I knew a FF was out.

Kycop34

I have both a FF and a 1/2. I wear the full when its really cold or when i take long road trips or hitting the expressway by myself.

I ride 2 miles ot work and 15 to the in-laws house so i usually dont wear one at all around town here, i do take the 1/2 with me everywhere because i live so close to the TN line where helmets are the law. I don't wear a helmet as often as i should.

The detachable windshoeld is a big bonus in cool weather or night ridin, i can wear the half and be comfortable.

I only wear my hair. No helmet laws in Delaware, but I have a gmax shorty with a shield if I have to travel. not a big fan of helmets, but I'm also not a big fan of wheelchairs. Wearing a helmet increases the chance of survival 65% at highway speeds; that increases your chances of living in a wheelchair by at least 80%. Kudos to the guys that wear them religously. And yes, I do wear and believe in seatbelts.

I use FF when doing highway and halfy when on the back roads unless its colder out. I can't stand not having a FF on the highway, God forbid i get hit with something at those speeds. Bad enough when i'm doing 40 and get hit with small bugs on the backroads.

I have a Scorpion Exo 400 FF and a Fulmer 1/2. I find I do a lot of riding in cold weather and/or at night, so I favor the FF. For short/warm/good weather, I'll use the 1/2 but even with a small windshield I have the FF on the majority of the time.

I have a beanie but I wear a fake vanity skull cap most of the time. Vermont requires helmets (Socialist nanny state fucks!) but the cops will let you get away with the fake ones. As long as it looks like a helmet and has a reflective sticker on the back they'll wave you on.
Before you go off on me about helmets saving lives and shit. The Air force did a study and found helmets are just as likely to kill you as save you. Before you refute that statement consider this; no one tracks deaths caused by helmets or seat belts for that matter. Those stats don't support the narrative but it does happen.
Hmm I'll see if I can find the PDF on the AIr force report and post it.

Seems like everyone has an opinion on this one. I've got a full for hi-way and a german non-dot for in town. I read on a legit site that if a biker were to get in a wreck that was bad enough for the integrity of the helmet to be a factor in head trauma, then more than 90% of the time there would be at least one other fatal injury on the body. So, maybe a full will protect your face unless you're feeling like that lucky 10% or less. Face it, its a dangerous thing we do, dont drive like an IDIOT!!!

Ya, this thread has already been done, but who cares!

I have a full and a bennie. I like wearing the bennie more, mostly because it does look better IMO. As of right now, I find myself switching back and forth between the two. The bugs are out in full force now and I am wearing the full face more and more. Plus, when things start to heat up, as strange as it might sound, the full face is actually a bit nicer than my bennie/half, when it is 100+ outside and I am riding 70+ the hot wind on my face is very unpleasant.

I've got a Scorpion EXO-200 3/4 open face. It's got both a visor and face shield which are interchangeable. Yesterday it was 38 degrees and I gotta admit having the face shield made it much nicer ridin' into the wind. :pirate:

i have a FF and a half helmet. I too used to ride sport and have had the unhappy feeling of kissing the ground. I only use my half for around town and doing low speed rides with the inlaws. Im looking at getting a new helmet here pretty quick thinking about trying out a duel sport helmet because i like the way the visor looks.

Well I have to update my head gear for this post. I got asked to beta test the new Rider3 GPS unit for TomTom ( my employer ). The unit is bluetooth enabled so I picked up a full face with integrated bluetooth tech. Here's the company www.blutekhelmet.com.
I figure I'll still wear the skull cap for most riders but on rainy/cold days and long rides the new helm will be handy. Plus it'll link to my ipod touch so I can have some tunes playing which will be nice.

Do you mean Icon Airframe, or is there a 'Mainframe' model. I just recently discovered the Icon Airframes, probably the coolest full face helmet I have seen out of all the brands, though it looks pretty sport bike, I wouldnt mind having one.

I have a shorty, an open face and a full face. My personal favorite, for most uses, is the open face with a pair of motorcycle rated shades (George Jetson wishes he looked this good). The full face always gets the nod for cold weather or the highway. I use the shorty infrequently around town for short trips.

And as it has been said, looks be damned.

For anything over 50mph - Full Face Shoei.
In winter? - Full Face Shoei
I've got a 3/4 that I wear in summer on short, low speed trips, like to work.

I touch 50mph on the way to work, and because I'm too cool for wrap arounds or goggles, I wear mirrored aviators, and over 50mph my eyes water too much to see.

2 helmets...I have a 3/4 HJC that I kind of put the mod action on, I removed the visor and ripped all the padding out, didn't like it sitting up on my head, I hot glued a couple of thin pad strips on the front and back crown areas just to give a touch of comfort, now, even with a rag on, it sits very comfortable and low enough to give the ears some protection. and lastly for any distance or high speed riding, i have a Zox FF with the full frontal flip up and the slide down shades built in... I probably look like i should be flying something rather than riding something, but it works and feels great. A couple of years back, I caught a rock flung off a tire at highway speed, hit about an inch under my eye... got my attention...

I have been rocking the Daytona Cruiser (shiny black) for over a year now every time I ride. They are comfy, and light compared to my old school shoei 70's 3/4 metalflake.

I have been curious about those bell 500's or whatever.....I want to try one on. I wonder if they are lower profile than our Daytonas, as the Cruiser is the lowest profile 3/4 around that is DOT approved, so don't want to buy one if they look bigger on my head than the Daytona.

Yep. The new Bell's are super low profile (and the liner is WAY better than the Daytona). If you decide to buy one online though, they fit almost a 1/2 size smaller than most other helmets (so does my Daytona though),

Damn it, are serious beak? That means I'm going to have to maybe buy one. I did not think it would be possible to make a DOT 3/4 lower profile than the Daytona unless I went with a Biltwell or another old school non-DOT.

They have these at a bike shop near me for $120-$140. Last time I was there I drooled at them, but didnt even bother trying one on, because all these DOT helmets say they are "Low-profile" and they never, ever, never are. Saves me from trying them on and being let down. Though the daytona isnt even that low-profile but it's the best ive seen...and with out a doubt better than most.

I guess I may have to stop by the store and try one on if they are super low like you say.......I do like some of the cool graphics they have. And the lining looks nice.

The bell custom 500 or whatever sucks, tried it on in store today. Daytona cruiser all the way!

On a side note, the Bell was the best quality and construction I have seen, however it is just not as low profile as people say it is.

I wear several depending on what kind of riding. If cruising around and no highway I wear a Black Shorty POW helmet with a set of goggles.

When I ride on Highway or Interstate I wear a full face with mirrored or Smoked windshield Scorpion titanium solid or Warrior titanium.

When i ride off Road HJC Dirt Bike with Smith Goggles or Utopia.

It's a Mainframe. I bought it 3 years ago. Might be a discontinued model by now. I have a dark smoke shield as well as a mirrored one.

That is a freakin awesome helmet. I just have a chromed half helmet now but plan to get a FF when I have the funds. My last FF kept my good looks intact when I crashed my old Goldwing.

Got a pair of Scott motocross goggles cause they were the only ones my dealer had in stock that fit my fat head :glasses2: and over my glasses. Since then I got a great pair of transition goggles (yellow to gray) that work great for my 5am commute and in full sun. Have to wear ear plugs so I can hear when I get to work. Finally got a taller windshield but haven't put it on yet.

Did a class presentation on why you should where a fullface vs. non D.O.T.

I dont care what anybody thinks after doing the research I wear my fullface. Its the same as crimson posted a few posts back

Its comfortable and air flows nicely, but the main thing that I liked was the pic, and the flat black. Also scored a tinted visor used for good price on here.

I definitely do ff. The comfortability and style is not worth a broken jaw and a road rash beard. I was thinkin bout goin half or 3/4 but definitely not going to after my wreck. Its just not worth the lack of safety

I use a Fulmer half helmet I picked up at the harley shop while my friend was signing his life away. It's comfortable on me. I don't go on any long rides.. maybe 30-40 miles each and I haven't had any issues.

I wear a full face helmet with a darked out face shield. I dont like being recognized when I ride. It makes me feel like a badass. I also have a jockey helmet for rallys and runs, but I have to wear a backwards facing ball cap or the damn thing chokes the shit outta me...

Full on the highway, otherwise 1/2.

Depends on temp. If below 45 degF=full face, above=half.

Hands down for both Safety & Cool factor. I gotta vote for a full Darth Vadar helmet & face mask with CE Armor padded kevlar Spiderman Underoo body suit (cape optional but if so, a superman one). Add white alpine skiing boots and TA-DA!!!

I have been rocking the Daytona Cruiser (shiny black) for over a year now every time I ride. They are comfy, and light compared to my old school shoei 70's 3/4 metalflake.
.
I have a FF HJC and a 1/2 Daytona. I like the Daytona better.

Well, that picture is old...it was taken when I first started riding. I have updated my mesh jacket - the one I have now has leopard flames up the sleeves & around the waist and a cute chickie on the back with high heeled boots and a whip. :leer:

Oh, and never judge a book by it's cover. I almost always have on a mesh jacket...safety first!

No doubt!
Im in a no helmet law state and still wear one....
occasionally during a benifit ride when we have police escorts I might take it off, but other than that I have one on.

OH, and since this is a helmet thread, no full face, have one but I have not worn it in a few years, I gotta shorty 1/2 lid, and also a non DOT brain bucket for quick rides around town.

So is the thought that you are wanting to "protect" your head from flying debris and not the pavement? I run no-helmet sometimes and have gotten pelted with rocks in the forehead (even with the 1/2).

I always have a windshield, (some of my old bikes no, but past 2 years) love it and cant imagine without it! (plus out in the stick and farm area there are a shit load of bugs!)

My non DOT isnt like the novelty helmets you see around, its a full PVC shell, with an inside foam impact layer and a liner.

But when I wear my non dot its basically to stay in the habit of wearing one, plus if I'm wearing it around town, I got a store , my parents house, and a little plaza all within a mile and speed limits are 35 the whole way so, just a lid to wear for the hell of it....

Where I live its all farm land around me so when in town my only real concern is someone horse or cow getting loose.

I have a shield for my SS, but it's like driving a drag car with the parachute open (except the SS isn't a drag car). It KILLS the bike. Makes it hard to go up hills at/above the speed limit.

And that's only part of it. There's also the fact that the wind swirls around it in such a way that it rolls UP my chest blowing my goatee into my face. That pisses me off.

I have noticed with dif styles and contours there are a shit load of differences.
I had a shorter one on my old bike, thing usta make my helmet shake at certain speeds, but blocked some wind so I dealt with it...

The one I have now kinda wraps around my head light a bit, and is taller and wider, so it really helps! as for power its fine.

Your new ride should handle a shield no prob! BUT its gotta be the right one or it will screw up the look.

I have every type of helmet and i can say the one i wear depends on the weather.
The one that feels the best so you wear it is the one to use.
I prefer the 1/2 even though it isn't as safe but can't beat the full
on days below 40 degrees.
I will wear any one on my 1800 vtx and don't worry about "style"
IN short the one on you're head is the best!

Normally wear an open face, except for trips around town. Also own a half but seldom wear it. Have a cheap modular full face I take on trips to Colorado in case I get into heavy rain, which I usually do.

Noob ???? Got my first street ride 40 years ago this June. How about you

So, you've been a Noob for 40 friggin years??? :stunned: Poor Bastard.... At least he's honest Bros.

P.s. What's a "Nood"? A Noob with 40 years of Noobtardation maybe? IDK. Anyone? :dunno:

It's even tougher, when you are stupid.
Whatever, quit your whinin Noober, we all feel sorry for you. But, admitting it is half the problem they say. Good for you  I'm sure your therapist will put your post on the med fridge with a big gold star (maybe even give ya some extra pudding. mmmmmmm)

In honor of your major breakthrough, you've been chosen as the BMF-Noobuloid of the day...

I've got a matte black scorpion exo 700. Since i am a pretty small guy it looks huge on me.
I found out that childrens XL fits me perfectly and has a smaller shell so it looks normal on me.
I will be getting the wife the new scorpion half helmet with the drop down visor. She hates the full face.
Since we both wear the same size i will do what you guys do and wear it around town. One time i had a yellow jacket fly right into my half opened visor in the city and it got stuck in there with my face for a good 10 seconds haahhaha.
Having a full face for high speeds and an open face type for city sounds like the way to go.
We really should not worry about matching helmet types to our bikes.
Our safety is more important than that.

I wear a full face I bought when I had my GPz, and I will continue to wear it when I ride longer journeys, but for around town I plan to buy a half helmet, I find my full-face to be a little restricting vision wise, and I'd rather have some air below 40mph ;)

I have a half and full, but mainly wear the half since I have bought that one. Definitely keeping the full helmet though, never know when I may need to wear it again.

Wearing a full face is like wearing a seat belt. The split second that you need it is the same split second you wish you had worn it that day!!:thumbsdow

Bought another full face off of Ebay after realizing that the weather was starting to change. Went to a party wearing a half helmet when it was 90 degrees and left when it was in the 50's. Just received the new one today and found that they made a mistake. Same graphics on the helmet but it is a flip up with a rainbow visor built in.. The one I bid on went for a third of the price.
