Hey everybody,
First off I would like to thank everyone who has posted in the technical dept. I've gained a wealth of knowledge on how to tweak and troubleshoot my 1985 VT500.I've followed this forum for about 6 months now and have an experience I'd like to share with y'all.
Yesterday I went on my first toy run. from Asheboro to Thomasville NC. it was a perfect day for a cruise, 66 degrees and sunny. I had no idea what to expect, as I have only been riding since july of this year. once I got to the Mall parking lot, I couldn't believe what I saw!! over 1000 bikes and 90-95% were HARLEYS !!! a sea of black and orange leather, beenie helmets,
and beards!! and here I come, mr. low buck himself on my $700 VT500, $12 salavation army BROWN leather speedway jacket, some hand -me-down gloves and helmet( full face ducati yellow Aria signet GT) from my brother that used to race AMA superbikes.talk about feeling out of place!! actually it felt like I was invisible as nobody would give me the time of day. whatta buncha SNOBS !! Well, it comes time to get rolling and everybody lines up 2 by 2, until I fall in line, then nobody wants to get beside me, in fact they leave a 50 yard gap in back of me. which was fine with me as it gave me this huge "comfort zone". all in all it was a great time, getting to run red lights, intersections, and on ramps all under police supervision !!! not to mention cruising down NC 109 at 85 mph.
I reckon what it all boils down to is that I love to ride, period. doesn't matter with who or where. I'm not trying to impress anybody or project some big pseudo image.
But if you want to spend $1500 on genuine HD leathers, wear a cereal bowl with stickers all over it, and ride an oil leakin slow-ass, noisy overpriced P.O.S. thats your business.
just don't think you're better than everybody else cuz you do !!!!
I think in the future I would be better off looking for all honda or metric cruiser funtions.
anybody in the NC/SC/VA give me a shout and we can cook something up. Lefty NC

Maby it was YOU , not the bike that they where avoiding . Being a new rider maby it showed and they gave you room for their own safety . Most people that ride HD have rode a Honda first . Safety courses or dirtbikes or first bikes . Some times the brotherhood feeling happens after a few rides and quite a few beers . I have gone on alot of runs now with my Honda with mostley HD riders . I have gotten to know a fair amount of them . I rarely get an attitude from them . People without a bike , now that is an entirely different story . Grow a beard if you think it will help . If you thought that you would fit in with a group of dentists , lawyers and docters trying to out do each others midlife crisis . That would be your mistake . I am not sure what you expected from that run . Instant friends , some one to pat you on the back and tell you that you are now in the cool club . Do you expect a guy in a Ford to give you the " nod " as you pull up to the red light in your Yugo ? Ride because you enjoy it , not for what others may think about you . I thank my friend every time he parks his dirty ACE next to my bike . You know for making my bike look even better . I am sure some HD guy would love to park his bike next to yours for the same reason .

welcome to the board. i used to ride a wide glide but because of money constraints switched to my spirit. (exes are a bitch). before the harley i rode a suzuki intruder. 90% of the people i do rides with have harleys and i catch shit from all of them but they all say the same thing at the end of the day. you are in the wind and thats all that matters. try to get some of your friends to go next time and with each run you do the more people you will get to know.
