The weater in ME. is ...........ride when you can in April............the law has there eye out on the biker community, our new laws comming soon are displaying inspection, and the pipe bullshit law in 2012! As far as we know no helmet laws are on the horizon, and like all of our constitutional rights are taken away(seat belts..etc.) I'm sure it's comming again as in the past! Thank You UNITED BIKERS OF MAINE!!!!!
Any way I'm rounding a corner and Duputy DAWG throws the blues....he claims I made an illigal turn and was doing over 50 in less than 1/8 mi.....Not to say the 94 VT1100 can't do it (60mph in 2nd...probably more, I need a tach!) he tells me the plate mount is illegal as much as me riding without a cycle' indorsment.. court date...comming...(taking class tommorrow to feed the state more money!)SOOOOO.......no sticker $133.......and as it goes and not to rant about my mistakes he didn't tow the bike (let me go get my trailer) saved $120.....no tik for improper display of plate..$???? or failure to signal $????( there was no one behind me and I still can't get my LED's right!!!!!! They will be fixed this weekend or I 'm not ridin' till they are! Thank GOD it's gonna be in e low 50's all next week!)
Any way BLAH BLAH I fucked up!
Check your state laws when relocating your plate and not just assuming that its legal cause' everyone else has one! It's another just another reason for em' to check your shit....and I don't want anyone checkin' my shit ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RIDE SAFE AND AVOID JOHNNY LAW AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!:pissed: ..at myself!!!!!!!!

IDK why the laws are getting so stupid.... IMO to many people have become to dependent on the goverment to solve problums. Anyway... can someone tell me why crotch rockets come with a factoy license plate mount that sits so far behind the tire and under the seat that it casn not be seen from the rear, yet a sideways mounted plate is banned. STUPID FUCKS in goverment!!!!

Good point Ghost. Unbe-friggin-leavable!! And I don't understand why a side mount is so "against the law". It's not like you can't see or read the damn thing if it's side mounted. The law should be readable, and lit correctly so it can be seen easily. Who cares where the fuck it's mounted.

I know the inspector stops by work for our shop, and one day he was asking me about lights. I said, I am pretty sure I only need a headlight as long as I do hand signals. He said true.... and then I said, oh, and there are led's on it anyway. He then mentioned the sideways plate, that is illegal, I asked if he was going to do anything about it and he said, Most likely you will be left alone, unless you do something stupid. When I built my new mount, old one was to thin of material, I went horizontal.... just to make it easier on me. I don't need a reason to get pulled over and have them start asking about pipes and shit. One less thing to get me in trouble.

I've got mine vertical. Apparently, the law here in Ontario is that it has to be " The licence plate on your motorcycle must be placed so as not to be obscured by anything, so that the plate is readily legible and it's identity is not confused and such that there is a light that will illuminate the plate when the lights are on. The plate must also be in a horizontal position with the numbers and letters in an upright position rendering them readily legible"
Having said that, I've got mine vertical and have had several officers drive behind me and have never had a problem. I was told by one that as long as I'm not causing any trouble or giving them another reason to pull me over, I should be ok.

Damn Bubbanezz, I tried for two weeks to find that in the HTA, where is it on the MTO site?

I actually e-mailed a the local constabulary. That's a quote from the answer I got back. I e-mailed the OPP as well and, after it going through 3 different people, got an e-mail from a Traffic Sergeant in the Provincial Support Unit of the Highway Safety Division. He actually sent me a section of the Highway Traffic Act and his interpretation. Shoot me a PM with your e-mail addy or e-mail me at (my user name + @rogers.com) and I'll forward it to you monster.
He pretty much came off sounding like a hard ass and commented that he HAS charged motorcyclists with plate infractions.
I figured I'd live dangerously and plead ignorance if it ever happened to me.

I am going to redesign mine and turn it horizontal, never need to give the popo a opportunity to pull you, never know at what un-opportune time it may be  PM sent
I get tired of the popo's interpretation of the Highway Traffic Act and then dish out tickets.... can you imagine how many poor fuckers get tickets that are actually bogus, but don't know the difference because they don't know the law or their rights and pay the fockin things. They do make it damn hard to find a complete version of the HTA though :pissed:

When I was younger my Mom bought me a copy of the MVC of BC. She thought it would help me stay legal, but really, just allowed me to find loopholes. I knew it off by heart and when I got pulled over, I would simply say, check out Chapter 2, section 4, then write me that ticket.... They normally came back to the truck a little pissed and toss me a warning. I would normally just take that and go, since if they really got picky, there were other things they could find if proded. If it was in legal shape though, I would ask how he can write a warning for something legal? Just to piss them off more....

Yeah, it's your responsibility to know your rights and where you legally stand, so many ppl don't and take all kinds bogus shit, but it does take diligence to read and comprehend all the statues so you don't get screwed over.

It's my understanding that these plate laws were aimed at the sport bikes previously mentioned. Unfortunately we are getting caught in the middle of it and have become a revenue source.

I think Ohio may try and work on a no-verticle mount like Florida, however, I think now there is no strict law against it, but they do not promote doing it. I have had several cops right behind me in traffic many times. I know they see it. Never had a problem. Just like I leave the front tag off my car even though its against the law, I think it looks nicer, yet no cops should say anything about it unless I get caught speeding or doing something else illegal.

Well here in, the people's republic of, Vermont. We're not supposed to do a vert mount. We're also required to wear a DOT dink helmit. I had a cop buddy tell I could get away with a vanity helm but he didn't think I should push it with vert mounted plate as well

good resource.
I had to dig for awhile, but found this for Virginia:
5; § 46.2-716. How license plates fastened to vehicle; altering appearance of license plates.
A. Every license plate shall be securely fastened to the motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer to which it is assigned:
1. So as to prevent the plate from swinging,
2. In a position to be clearly visible, and
3. In a condition to be clearly legible.
B. No colored glass, colored plastic, bracket, holder, mounting, frame, or any other type of covering shall be placed, mounted, or installed on, around, or over any license plate if such glass, plastic, bracket, holder, mounting, frame, or other type of covering in any way alters or obscures (i) the alpha-numeric information, (ii) the color of the license plate, (iii) the name or abbreviated name of the state wherein the vehicle is registered, or (iv) any character or characters, decal, stamp, or other device indicating the month or year in which the vehicle's registration expires. No insignia, emblems, or trailer hitches or couplings shall be mounted in such a way as to hide or obscure any portion of the license plate or render any portion of the license plate illegible.
C. The Superintendent may make such regulations as he may deem advisable to enforce the proper mounting and securing of the license plate on the vehicle.
Comment: The main thing is that the plate must be visible. For some reason some members of law enforcement believe that if you mount the plate vertically as opposed to horizontally that you are violating this statute. Nothing in this statute forbids the vertical mounting of license plates.

"When the state needs money, the people will pay." Don't know who said it but it's true. Some states are looking into those 3D barcodes that can be read by laser automatically.

I don't think any of the rice rockets come OEM like that. The fender eliminator kits are so common that some dealers are putting them on when the're assembling new bikes. They used it as a freebie to close the deal with my buddy on his R6.
In CA the law is CVC 5201. License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging, shall be mounted in a position so as to be clearly visible, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12 inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground, except as follows:
<!-- #EndEditable --><!-- #EndEditable --><!-- #BeginEditable "section_content" -->
CA does not specifically state vert mount is a no no, but I have seen judges rule that the position negatively affect visibility. Depends on the judge. The foot rule is another one that gets guys a lot. Often the two are cited together.
