polishing the forks?

hey i'm gonna have my buddy polish my front forks. anyways there stock already kinda chrome or polished, Except the bottom part where your axle bolt goes through your forks. anyways curious if anyone has had this polished? wondering if i need to sand it down or put aircraft stripper on it then polish it.

Same concept as the triple tree, they have the same kind of coating on them. Wish I knew this before I spent 4 hours sanding my legs...only to paint them this spring...GRRRRR!!
