I'm thinking about getting the fenders and tank painted this winter. I’m thinking of just going flat black. Almost like a primer. I went to a local paint shop today and got a quote of $387. What's the consensus out here? Is that reasonable or are the ripping me off?

I have thought about that. Just don't want it to turn out looking like shit.

So if it turns out like shit, take it in and have them redo it. What are you out? A couple of cans o rustoleum, IMHO.

Flat and Satin black are the two easiest colors to do yourself. Like Pegs said what have you got to lose except $10 in paint.

If you do rattle can it ask the paint store which paint or clearcoat will hold up to a little gasoline spillage when fueling up. I hear it can bubble as soon as the gas hits it.

I'll have to sit on this for a while. If it goes wrong, $400 seems a bit high. I think I'll go get a couple of more estimates. Maybe just leave it the hell alone. Thanks guys

Why don't you ask Lu over at www.scooterpuzzles.com (http://www.scooterpuzzles.com) what she would charge? I sent her my tank and fenders and she did a great job. Keep in mind paint is expensive and it needs to be stripped, primed, cleared, wet sanded and oven baked. There is a lot of work involved that we don't realize.

Thats a good price.most single color paint jobs are $500-$600.If you paint it yourself use scotch brite first so the paint will stick then clean with wax and grease remover. You can get duplicolor spray paint at the auto parts store it will hold up to gas and sprays good.Just use light coats and it will come out good.

Hey Freshmaker,

I ordered some hood scoops for my truck and spray painted like they said. (gloss black) roughed it up, cleaned it, and clear coated it. It actually turned out pretty nice. If your going for th nostalgic look it will only add to it. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the info. I'm back on the fence about painting it. It seems like everyone has a black bike.

Got any pictures of your scoops you painted.

Yea there are alot of black bikes. You sure as hell don't wana blend into the crowd. Sorry man, I sold that truck awhile back. You could always get a piece of sheet metal and try a practice run if your worried as to how it will turn out.

Good point. I think I'll spend the $400 on other mods for now.

I spent $1300.00 because I went with color changing paint. My painter did 6 coats paint & clear. I think for what you are looking to do it's a fair price.

You've got a sweet ride and some deep pockets! Looks good. Wish I had the cashflow.

Fresh, go with the professionals. You need to strip the clear and other shit off before hitting it with a can of spray. TThe price they gave you is good. Just make sure you ask if they are going to strip off the old and bake on the new.

Once you go black, you never go back. Shows a lot of dust, but looks great!
