probably won't happen because it's HUGE business - doesn't make any less aggravating.

Not price gouging my ass. Local gas prices are cheaper at BP & Shell than Speedway (which has ethanol so it should be cheaper!). That's a first in these parts.
Gas prices have dropped 40+ cents in the last month.
Still feel strongly that we need to have an alternate fuel here in the US and let the Saudi's et. al., sit over yonder on their big pile-o-crude.

It's $2.07 across the street from work here in Columbus...home (30 miles south) is about $2.11...at least I can fill up my car now at 1/2 tank for less than $20.00.

Forget the alternative fuel BS. It sounds nice, it would be great if we had it, but in reality we DONT HAVE IT. Yes, there are Wind Mills, Solar, and Hydrogen Power sources, but none of them are advanced enough to come within 1% of total US power requirements. The technology, plain and simple, is just not there yet. Eventually it will be there, but most likely not in our generation.
The price of Gas has viewed some substantiated increases not because of storms and wars. Sure they have had an impact, but it is a quick recovery impact - as you are witnessing now the decrease in prices. Yes, the oil refineries are gouging. No question about that, but like the other it is a short impact recovery. Our energy problem is rather a result of supply and demand. This S&D can be summed up in one word ------ CHINA. (ref The Economist - I think it was mid Sept issue)
China is becoming the next major economic power and will surpass the US in the near future. ( Long term they will drop back below the US. ). Both, China and India are going through their own Industrial Revolution.
WE are butting heads with China and India for OIL, and the US consummers are crying FOUL!!! However those same consummers are adamantly against the US drilling its own resources. These same countries are two of the largest polluters in the entire World, but we are supposed to grant them full exemptions and pass an environmental bill that would put even greater restrictions on the US.
Unfortunately we have placed ourselves in a position that there are no immediate fixes. China has helped a little by re-evaluating their currency and thus slowing their economic expansion, but any feasible remedy to our oil usage is still years away.
Nuclear Power is a great power source, but that is another source we, the consummer, have nixed. Meanwhile, the rest of the world has increased this power source, but we are smarter than they are ... arent we?

Okay, short of nuking China, what about this bio-diesel everyone is talking about? Made from soybeans - some are recycling grease from fast food restaurants. Farmers in our area are using it....can make it for something like 50 cents a gallon. That would at least ease some of the strain on the trucking industry and ultimately relieve us of paying heightened prices for goods shipped over land. Not to mention helping our own farm communities with a cash crop.
It doesn't solve the whole issue at hand but would at least help some in the short term.
Europe went to more diesel vehicles when their gas prices started in inflate. I could see the US doing that as well. Compared to what Europe is still paying per gallon (or liter), we don't have a whole lot to complain about. Not to mention their mass transit systems...you can get just about anywhere via train.
There are solutions to the oil issue and have been some presented in the past - problem is the oil companies have so much money, they buy these folks off to stop any competition. You can't blame these folks as I'm sure they're being offered more money than any of us will ever see in a lifetime...

Okay, ...lifetime...
Bio diesel is another one of those quick cures that everyone talks about. However are you willing to PAY THE PRICE? Sure a farmer may be able to make it for 50 cents, which I seriously doubt since he is probably not including a lot of the factors used to produce it - including his time in making it. But to take it from a handful of farmers to a viable power source for a large mass of people is a whole different story.
How do you respond to excessive unregulated polutants (diesel particular filters plug up when using bio fuels , Oxidation Catalysts are often times useless against a bio diesel fuel, and SCR Systems is a nightmare.) AQMD is demanding higher and higher purity levels of Diesel. Biodiesel is going the wrong direction, as far as exhaust is concerned, biofuel is termed a dirty fuel. Ethanol is clean, but diesel is a different horse.
A lot of those resources you claim are bought out in reality faded out because they are not practical. Take your example of restaurant grease. Will we need to refine this grease to reach a level of purity that the AQMD will except? Do you build dozens of biograde refineries, or do you spend that money on more crude oil refineries? How many millions of barrels of grease can you extrapulate from the fast food restaurants in your area DAILY !!!
You see they all sound NICE, but in reality they are PIPE DREAMS. The best possible source we have will be either Nuclear or Hyrdrogen. Nuclear is immediately available. Hydrogen is the best, but practically speaking, it is still years away from being a viable fuel source.
What I am trying to insill is that we cry and cry, but when given a realistic solution - like drilling for oil, establishing more Nuclear Power Plants - we say NO NO NO. You just simply cant have it both ways. So quit your moanin, tighten your belt because higher gas prices are here to stay, and pray that someone has a major scientific break through that will make hydrogen as easy as going to your garden hose to fill up.

How about I put a big windmill on top of my car. Then I would be producing energy as I drive down the road...... Ok. That won't work....
Mr. Fusion has been out for years! I'm gunna get me one of those! Want proof? See the movie! Don't tell me that was FAKE!
How about the sterling engine? Problem with these new engines is that they are years away if they are as good as they seem! Production costs might outweigh the benefits. Diesels are more expensive up front. May save down the road but how much do they save considering the added expense up front? And who keeps a vehicle long enough now a days to recover the added expense? My Father used to drive a big car. I asked him about the cost of gas. He said that he bought the cars cheaper, used, and the savings on the car far outweighed the extra fuel he put in them. Smart Man!
They can build all the reactors in MY back yard. Or dig for oil! Wouldn't bother me, if it was a solution. I still don't understand why we don't use some of the oil in Alaska. Or ship some of the free oil over from our new state, IRAQ! :bluegrab::wink_2:
Or we could all ride mopeds like in Europe...... :Moped:

Foget magnets - we need COLD FUSION. Drink a six pack of beer, piss in the hopper and toss the beer cans in after it, and you have enough power to drive around the world 100 times.
NOW THAT IS FUEL ECONOMY AT IS BEST !!!
Maybe in a couple hundred years we will have figured cold fusion out......
