Just had my bike jetted, stage 1 kit (Dyno Jet). I have Cobra 2 inch drag pipes on my SS750. The greaser that installed the kit says that for me to get the full benefit of the jet kit I need to get a K and N air filter. Any truth to that, is it worth the 50 bucks? I just put in a new standard (Honda) air filter a month ago.
Thanks

The more air in, the more power out. Also, I don't think the jet kit does anything besides use more fuel until you give it more air. One of the guys on our team has his jetted and it sucks the fuel and isn't as fast as the rest. Need to do the bean box with the K&N from what I'm reading about it. Needs less restriction. Then check the plugs in a few hundred miles to see how it is running. Maybe need to change the jets again.

How does your bike run ? Good ? Bad ? If it runs good why fuck with it ? The K&N is a better filter . Open up the breathing a bit . Stage 1, I don't think you would gain that much by just changing the filter . Considering the change with Burbs/beans box /stage 3 jetting that I got . What would you really get 1/2 hp gain maby if that ? Just enough air to have to monkey with the fuel air mix again maby ?

Maby 10 hp gain . Hard to say . It has not been dynoed and I did it at 670 miles . Just a guess from what stock hp 39-42 was to what it is now .

Spirit,
There is very little if any gain in power from the installation of a K&N filter. You'll gain nothing if you haven't first opened up the exhaust. The stock exhaust IS the most restrictive part on the engine. The second most restrictive part of the engine is the bean box or air filter housing. If you'll notice on the instruction sheet that comes with any Dynojet jet kit, they don't change their recommendations based on stock or K&N filter. That's because the K&N filter doesn't make enough air flow volume difference with the stock air box to warrant a jetting change. You would however, notice enough of a change in air flow with the K&N filter AND a bean box mod or bootleg type of intake, that would require richening the mixture. For example: the Stage 1 jets for your bike with baffle-less exhausts are 104(front) and 106(rear). With a modified intake system the Stage 3 jetting jumps up to 134 and 138 respectively. This is a jump of 15 sizes! That's alot more fuel the engine is asking for!
The only plus with a K&N filter without a modified intake is it's the last air filter you'll ever need to buy for your engine. It's reusable. Just clean and reoil it and it's good to go for another 50,000 miles!

I pulled my stock air filter off in an attempt at the bean box mod and I noticed that my air filter has about 6 small tears in the paper filter. The filter is new and has less than 200 miles on it. I called the greaser that jetted the bike last week and he says that can happen when the bike backfires. Any truth to this and should i be worried?

If the guy that worked on your bike is a greaser, what does that make you? Mick, maybe?

You're gonna fit in pretty good around here.
On the air filter, I suppose it's possible. If it was to backfire through the carb. But I think you would have remembered that happening.

Considering the forces involved, I suppose it's possible for that to happen, no personal experience with it though !

I called the "mechanic" (hope thats better!LOL!) and he said that it backfired a few times after he jetted the bike but it stopped once he adjusted the air/fuel mixture. Anybody know if it is absolutely necessary to remove the fuel tank to do the bean box mod?
P.S. Heres to nobody on this forum missing any tail!!

It is not nessesary . However extreamly advisable . There are some tubes that are a real bitch to get back on with out removing it . I have done it both ways and tank off is far superior .
