These are not very common, but intersting enough, they do occur to women drivers more than men. The reason being that women are more prone to get back in their car while refueling.

The static electricity is enough to create a spark and resultant fire. There is an easy way to prevent this from happening. Just touch any metal part of the car before grabbing the pump.

As you watch the video, you see that she slides out of the car (creating the static charge) and the next object she touched is the fuel pump. If she would have touched the car beforehand the charge would have been released.

This also occurs more in the Winter than Summer as the air is a lot less humid and static buildup is more common. Also drivers are more likely to go back into their car, as it is refueling, due to the cold weather.

We saw that video in a gas class for the fire dept last month. I like how she tries to blow it out!
Too bad they don't have the whole video. When she gets back in car after starting the pump, she's smoking a cigarette!
