Sorry no pics untill product is finished. but if it comes out as nice as the other motorcycle products this company has produced it will be great quality. Here is the story, I contacted this company to make the radiator cowls they told me that if i supply a pattern witch i have a brand new hondaline cowl they will produce and sell them. Thats right i get nothing but a new carbon fiber cowl and my og honda cowl will get damaged in the process. But i fugured if a lot of you guys want these this will help you out and maybe inspire you to keep looking for me a hondaline headlight cowl. Also i can supply the top bracket (see mine on my gallery) cheaper than you can have it made. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks Greg

Any idea on the price ?

I might be interested but aren't sure about the carbon thing. A glass/vinylester option might be more my style as I would probably end up painting it.
All down to price, I guess.

GREG LANE

Ya me to i would paint it like i did mine. But i think the carbon fiber will be stronger and some cases look cool. Hey guys how about a chain guard in carbon fiber.

But i think the carbon fiber will be stronger

That's not quite how it works.

boris please explain

Boris

It's not a short discussion and there's a lot more to composites than just the look of carbon.

In that application I think a few layers of lets say 5oz S-glass would be more than enough and still keep the weight down. Easier to work with as well.

Hell, since this isn't a stress member and is just decoration I would use chop and save a ton of cash.

Just trying to come up with a solution to get radiator cowls to shadow riders who want them, and this seams to be a good way. One of my first posts on this forum some (well call him shadow bitch expert know it all) cant remember his name but he said ya ive heard this song before noob fuck, show it or eat shit something like that well here it is so Mr Shadow Bitch expert fuck off. And for all you shadow riders who want one I was happy to throw in my $ 360.00 new cowl for the pattern How many other expert shadow riders are willing to do that. I would be a lot easer on me to just sell the new cowl i have and say forget it but isnt that what fourm bros are suppose to do each other. Let me know which way to go im going to send the cowl off Friday 09-11-09

Without holding the part in my hand it's hard to say which way I would go. I can't see the contours.
Easiest way would be to spray a few coats of an epoxy primer (makes painting a breeze in the future), followed by some light s-glass or even chop if thickness (about 3/8") isn't a concern and wet the whole thing out with vinylester resin.
If you like the carbon look that just substitute the epoxy primer for some light carbon weave just for looks (that's how most of those dinky rice burner hoods are made).

I bet 3 layers of 1208 biax (glass weave) would make for one tough part that could take a rock head on at full speed.

Thanks Yo Muda, Boris and Bama Shadow lets hope this comes out great. I personaly like the way it looks, the radiator does not look so flat and if you have forwards it dont look so out of place with the controls sticking way out in front of the flat radiator from a side view.

Hmmmm, this thread getting interesting. Talkin and working around our laminaters and painters, gotta go with Boris on the materials and processes. Besides, Boris seems to know his shit on this stuff. Carbon fiber is a more expensive and less permitting on finish options than glass (even if hand laid glass like we do and not choppered). Anxious to see how this one looks. If, we ever get to see it and the final price.

More parts to follow. Im having a chain guard made also. Working on a headlight cowl. It seems that a lot of shadow riders like different size fenders front or rear if we can get together and come up with a size that people like lets go for it. Side covers, air cleaner cover let me know what you guys have a demand for. Thanks Greg

GREG LANE
09-14-2009, 11:14 AM
I havent got the final billing cost yet but im guessing somewhere around the 199.00 price tag. Thats a lot cheaper than i had to pay for the last one and 2 years of looking.

I have been searching forever for one of these cowls. I have been doing a web search at least once a week for a year or so and finally found this thread. I want one of these. Please let me know when they are ready. The only question I have is: does anyone know how well carbon fiber paints up? I want to pain it to match. Thanks for doing this Greg. Looking forward to it!!

Did I miss something? I thought that the reason for a carbon fiber ANYTHING was because of that cool carbon fiber look...why would you paint this carbon fiber cowl, instead of just buying the plastic cowl that he modeled the cf one from?

I must have missed something here, but that seems like a total waste of money. :thumbsdow

Agreed on painting CF VooDoo. If painting, why not use the same mold and glass some. I believe you can use the same mold and laying glass (material, time, finishing, etc...) cheaper than CF. Probably better price also. I would paint and didn't want to ruin or pay more for the CF so just lettin this go. Maybe wrong about using same mold though. Rschaff, you know the answer here?

oh...to tell the truth, these things are , imo ONLY, worthless... I am however, not a guy that adds things to my bike simply for looks...my apes are on it for comfort sakes, as the first bike I ever rode had 16 inch apes on it, and every bike sisne then, but I stand by my statement, again, imo only, carbon fiber is sweet to look at, and I would never buy something like that just to paint over it...course, I dont see the NEED for headlight cowls, or radiator cowls, or anything like that...now, if there was a chin spoiler made out of carbon fiber for a decent price, I would be all about that, simply because the chin spoiler forces air up and into m radiator...

Like I said, Greg I hope you sell all these things you want to sell, but I wont buy one from ya ONLY because I find it useless on my bike only. :beatnik2:

Well, I want one. If I had my choice I would go to to my Honda dealer and buy the Hondaline one. However they don't make it anymore. This is the only place I have seen that someone is trying to get one made. From what I have read, fiberglass would be fine. But Greg is getting it done in CF. I do not like the look of carbon fiber. I want to paint over it to make it look like any other piece of plastic on the bike. If anyone knows of anyone making one out of plastic or fiberglass please let me know. But so far it looks like painted cf is the way I am going.

That said, I still want one. :D

Not to mention CF is a hell of alot stronger than plastic or fiber glass, it is more resistant to rock damage/cracks

Paradox
10-08-2009, 08:45 AM
Dude Carbon Fiber is made with the same epoxy's as fiberglass, the carbon fiber strand is stronger than the fiberglass strand but the epoxy that binds it is the same. It will chip just like fiberglass. CF is more resistant to breakage and cracking therefore they can make it thinner than fiberglass. In that way they can use a thinner layup to achieve the same strength and make it lighter.

I used to use it to make a few pieces I sold in the RC racing world back a few years ago. In a cost analysis for this application CF has no real advantage over fiberglass. There is no structural stress other than holding itself on to the bike to deal with so the higher cost of CF versus the increased strength is of negligible value. Again, a lighter part adds no real value as we are not running featherweight race vehicles where every ounce counts. CF has a cool look, only if you don't paint it. I can paint fiberglass or metal to have the same look. So why would you want to use a more expensive Carbon Fiber?

Ohhh I get it, cause you want the Ohhh factor and to be a sheep and follow the herd.

Boris
10-08-2009, 08:06 PM
Just an FYI.
While carbon strands do have a higher tensile strength than regular glass, there's a whole lot more to it than that.
If laid up in the wrong direction, a carbon part will fracture much sooner than a glass part.
In general, the benefit of using carbon or a carbon-kevlar weave over glass is weight.

The shit you see on riced out Civics is only visual carbon with chop underneath. No benefits what so ever other than looks.
BTW, I can't stand the look of visual carbon. Having carbon smoothed out with resin defeats the whole purpose of carbon.
