Im taking my tank and fenders off this weekend to ship them off to get painted. Got copies of the parts guides made, not gonna have time to wait for a clymers to be ordered. I gotta say, I have a little bit of the cold feet, but cant wait to get it all painted up. Anyone have any hints or problems they ran into, mainly with the tank, as I already took the back fender off once to fit my new Sabre fender on there.

http://www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp

there is a link for a shop manual. its free.

here is the Microfiche for it. The microfiche shows ALOT more than you need to worry about but gives you a good idea of what the hell is under there.

The front fender is dead simple. Just 4 screws. I'd recommend taking the entire bracket off and getting that painted the same color because it does show.

The tank is simple. Take the two hex bolts off that hold your speedo and wiggle it towards the front forks until it comes off the tank. You can either let it hang off to the side or remove the plug.

Next, remove the seat and remove the one bolt holding the tank. Lift the tank slightly and put something in between the tank and frame to keep the tank up a little. There's two lines to worry about. The main line, which you simply remove from the petcock and the breather line which you simply pull off.

Then get a hold of the tank and wiggle left and right while pulling back on the tank and it will pop off the mounts. Then it's free.

Blue painters tape can be your friend when putting on freshly painted parts to prevent scratching Best thing is to put it around the other things than the painted parts.Take your time and leave the beer for when your done, you don`t want anything distracting you as well(dogs,kids,wife-but have a buddy to help)

Thats some solid advice Firefighter. Are you saying to cover the new painted stuff and the other parts, or just one of them. I was wondering if painters tape would do the trick. Thanks for answering that before I asked it.

Got it all taken apart and dropped off at the shop. It was very easy to take off. Thanks for the removal tips.

Got my tank and fenders back today and they look awesome!! Slapped it all together just to see what it looked like and I love it. the Sabre fender was pretty easy to get on, but my seat screws arent big enough, so I gotta go get some tomorrow. I also gotta adjust the petcock. Also found some smoked lenses for my lightbar at the harley shop, so I got them on also. Got the airbrushing for the stars and stripes set up for next weeken. I cant wait to get it together right and ride out.

Alright, for those interested, I have my bike back together with the new Sabre fender on and the OD Green paint job. You will have to check out my gallery to see it though.

Pictures aren't that great but I like the green.

Funny how Sabre owners are looking for Spirit fenders and vice versa.
