View Full Version : 93 Shadow V-twin 1100 oil fill level
A firend just bought a 93 Shadow 1100 and has a question about the oil fill level. His dipstick has 4 bumps, but no mention in the manual about the proper level. He was expecting a sight glass, but none there. Anyone know the answer for this?

R//T,
I have a '95 VT1100 and I've never noticed 4 bumps, but then I'm using a Cobra dipstick now. If I recall correctly, the stock dipstick has two lines on it, one for the minimum level and one for the maximum. The dipstick may have been changed from the '93 to '95 models, but the oil level should be the same. I'll try to remember to look at my stock dipstick after work today, and I can give you measurements to where the oil level should be.
Remember, when checking the oil level on these engines, the bike must be upright,(not on the side stand) and do not screw the dip stick in to get a reading.
This information will be in the owners manual, if he got one with the bike. They are usually kept in the left side cover with the tool kit, if it wasn't removed by a previous owner.

I haven't seen a "sight glass" on an engine in years....was your buddy frozen?
LMAO
Usually there're two distinguishable marks on an OEM dipstick....one low and one high..if it has been replaced by an aftermarket kit....then all I can suggest is that it be fittted with the OEM stick or using a service manual...
92' - 94' listed at 3.2 qts after oil/filter change and 3.05qts after oil change ONLY. Hope this helps.

You will know if it's over full because it will have a realy weard vibration and poor performance and it doesn't have to be much over full before the vibs start. I remove the dip stick and wipe it with a lint free cloth and set it back in the hole I then lean the bike up to the balance point off the side stand don't go past ballance because it will show more oil than there realy is. Lean the bike back to the side stand and check the dip stick.Try to run the level in the center between the high and low marks works fine on my 1100.
